1.) Running eRacer on modern Hardware
Fixing issues on game launch

The first thing to do is to have the game running in current Windows OS, which sometimes is not easy to achieve.

Playing the intro could be a problem in some systems. To make sure your PC is able to play it and don't crash in the process, go to the Steam game's installation directory, in Steam\steamapps\common\e-Racer\Gui\Avi .In here you will find three files, the intro and some videos for the car selection and audio background menus. Open it to check your system can play them:

In case the movies are not playing, please install VLC player, K-lite codec pack and try again.

There is another possible crash at the start, due some particular USB devices in your system. In my case, immediately after launch, the screen went black and a sound error played, but I was unable to see the error.

To diagnose the error, I switched the ddraw version, changing the file in the game's directory. You can find ddraw versions here: https://github.com/narzoul/DDrawCompat/releases
Download the version v.0.6.0 and replace into game's folder:

After that, at least I could see the error message:

This error is caused by some of my USB game devices. After disconnecting or disabling them in the Device Manager, the game could launch to the menus.

Fixing issues on game menus

There is another issue with the UI that ends up freezing and crashing the game, and doesn't allow for instance to change the car or the track selected or change some options in the UI.

That is caused also by some modern game devices. In my case the TQR Viper USB game device by Thrustmaster, totally blocked me to make some selections in the menus or launch a game mode, crashing the game at some actions.

Disconnect your USB game devices or disable them in the Windows Device Manager and that should fix the problem.

2.) Modern resolutions support
Default Steam game version supports up to 1024x768. But there is some ways to fix and patch it.

Increasing resolution to 1080p)

The game engine supports up to 1920x1080 (1080p or Full HD resolution). Trying to go to higher resolutions will crash the game. Also, the game configuration utility only allows to go up to 1024x768 with 32bpp colour depth. If you are OK with that resolution, you can change directly in the utility. If you want to increase the resolution, open the regedit tool and navigate to this folder:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Rage Games Ltd\eRacer

Here you have to change this three settings:

PREFERRED WIDTH: Up to 1920 (Base Decimal!)
PREFERRED HEIGHT: Up to 1080 (Base Decimal!)
PREFERRED BPP 32 (Base decimal!):

If you are too lazy to go to the registry editor and you prefer to apply directly the changes, you can download the next file and combine it in your Windows registry: https://1drv.ms/u/c/3c93287610d6f8de/Ea2ASg6ByrxFmhfxSB5ru4cBaTxAJ7SPPUBG2_4ZmFgcyw?e=5XiFcR

There is a side-effect of changing the resolution that is the cars will look very flattened and ugly. To avoid that, you have to modify the eRacer.exe file with an hexadecimal editor according to this link and your screen ratio preferred: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/ERacer

If you prefer to download directly the modified executable for 16:9 (my native monitor resolution and probably the most extended resolution), you can download it fom here and place it into the game's folder: https://1drv.ms/u/c/3c93287610d6f8de/EV-B3QvItOhCg4ECNLlDiy8BXz0X6YoFncY5HvksL980rQ?e=Nwji0l

NOTE: Please always keep a copy of this file. If the game updates, or the Steam file integrity verification process is re-done, the game will revert to original files and you will loose your changes.

In the original Steam launch version, there was a problem that the laucher.exe always overrided the configuration and get back the default settings to 800x600 and 16bpp. In the current version it seems that doesn't happen anymore, but if for some reason you can't keep you increased resolution and your changes are reverted, you can follow the next step:

Keeping the resolution)

1st Method) Stick with eracer.exe file

Change the resolution settings in the configuration utility or in Windows regedit tool as explained in the step before. Instead of launching the game from Steam, launch directly eRacer.exe from the game's folder:

This will launch the game directly, and you will be able to play with the changed resolution. Unfortunately, Steam overlay will not be available (Screenshots, game time recorded, custom controller bindings).

2nd Method) Make the registry keys unmodifiable

This second method will allow to have all Steam features by launching the game directly from Steam client. To do that, go to the next entry in Windows register:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Rage Software\eRacer

Left click on the folder and select "Permissions", then click on "Advanced".

Click on "Disable inheritance", selecting the option "Convert inherited permissions into explicit permissions on this object".

Now go back to the Permssions list, select every user and group and diselect "Full Control", letting only the "Read" permission enabled:

This will allow to keep the changed resolution.

NOTE: If you want to change the resolution any other time, you should undo this change by marking again "Full control" permission for all users.

3.) Cloud Save Support
Steam cloud support for eRacer does not transfer your unlocked progress, only the championship saves and laptimes.

So for instance, if you unlock 2 cars and 4 tracks and save the game in your main rig, and then you go to another computer, Steam Cloud will synchronize your best laptimes and the championship saves, but the cars and tracks will continue locked.

If you want to transfer your full progress between devices, you need to manually copy the following files between the game's directory:

  • eracer.cfg
  • eRacer.xfs

If you want a save that includes all unlocked cars and tracks, you can download it from here:

https://1drv.ms/u/c/3c93287610d6f8de/EXmbD2Dk3FlAgP8dlW1zL2QB6_4aEv7GxfI-MBWs4jUuAw?e=NQZDt3

NOTE: I don't recommend that, one of the greatest things of this game is to unlock all the content by playing, which is the most fun part.
4.) Steam Deck
-- WIP --

At current state, eRacer directly from Steam launches on Steam Deck with no major bugs and issues (only the videos are not playing, both intro and in-menus videos on car selection and sound options menu).

More troubleshooting and possibilities are currently in progress in Linux environment, and will be included in this guide if there is significant improvements or fixes found.

5.) Controller configuration support
The best and easy way to play with a controller is directly using Steam Input remapping options.

On Steam client, select the Properties of the game and the custom control. Customize your layout as wanted or just use one of the community.

I've tried this with many different controllers, including an Xbox One controller, and a Thrustmaster ESWAP Pro, and works perfectly fine in Windows 10 and 11 environment.

Make sure you map at least:

- Arrows (To Accelerate/Brake/Directions)
- Enter and Esc Keys
- Handbrake
- Gears if you're playing with manual gearbox
- Reset car position button
- Change Camera
- Rear view
6.) Game modes, unlock progress and tips
eRacer has 4 current working game modes and 1 that unfortunately disappeared.

Time Trial:

Perfect to try the cars and new unlocked tracks without stress, before going into the championship. Just select your car, track, to have a ghost or not, and try to beat the best lap time.

Cars and tracks for Time Trial mode are locked unless you unlock them in the Championship mode.

Arcade:

Select your car, track, number of opponents (up to 7) and number of laps (up to 8), and enjoy a quick race.

Cars and tracks for Arcade mode are locked unless you unlock them in the Championship mode.

This is the only way (apart from LAN mode) to make races with other cars in the DLC and the Bonus tracks.

Championship:

The main game mode (apart from the disappeared online) of eRacer.

You can play in Amateur or Professional Mode. There is no differences between these two modes except for the finish position you need in order to progress in the championship:

  • Amateur: Place 4th or best
  • Professional: Place 2nd or 1st

Advance in the campionship mode will allow you to unlock the locked tracks. To unlock the locked cars, you will need to win races in previously unlocked tracks.

So MAKE SURE YOU SAVE IN AT LEAST 2 (or even 3) DIFFERENT SLOTS! This way you can save the progress when you advance in the championship, but also have the opportinity to repeat that race and win it, to unlock the reward car.

So you basically have two ways to fully complete the game and unlock everything:

1) Complete the Amateur Championship to unlock all tracks, then complete the Professional Championship winning all races to unlock all cars.

2) Complete the Amateur or Professional Championships, but using different save slots. When a locked track is unlocked, repeat that last race in the Championship winning, it to unlock the cars.

To unlock the different cars you must win in all these different tracks (previously unlocked):

  • Aero-Tech SX: Aircraft Carrier
  • Stone Quarry: Mantis VRS
  • Proteus VVT: Chemical Plant
  • Ferreno GTV: Stately Home
  • Dominator GTR: Car Park
  • Sand Scorcher: Win the professional championship in The City

Your best way to complete and win the championship mode is to master all the different racetracks. Practice in time trial mode until you're able to complete at least 5 laps or more without errors or major mistakes and being fast, knowing where to slow down to avoid roll and spin. Then you are ready to win this race in the championship.

The use of the handbrake at the beginning it's not mandatory. Even when it's useful to take some hairpins, at the start it's a bit hard to control the right amount of pressure to nail the turns, so you can skip its use. Or you can get used to it and master its usage. It's important that the use of hand brake doesn't slow you at the exit of the corners, or you will loose time.

All the cars have no ABS. So, if you brake hard, the wheels will lock avoiding you to turn. You need to know the right pressure on the brake to avoid loosing the direction. You can also "play" with this factor, making the car slide into the turns. In any case, after long straights you will be locking your wheels, you only need to know when to release brake and accelerate again to recover control and make the turn, and do this at the right speed for that specific corner.

At the start and during the whole race, AVOID ALL CONTACT with AI cars at all costs! Crashing or touching other cars will easily make you spin, roll, or send you to the wall. Overtake always in the safest way you can. Once you're in leading positions, just focus on the track and your racing lines, avoiding driving mistakes. Eventually, you'll be 1st and building a gap to win the race.

Avoid damaging the car as much as possible. Any jump, crash, contact with other cars, or roll will damage your car. Although usually the damage does not slow you down (at least until major damage is done, at 65%), all the damage has to be repaired after the race, so the most damage you do to your car, less money you will win.

The championship classification is based on the money you have in your pocket.

If the race start is messed up, you can always press "Esc" key, abandond to the main menu and load the start of the race again. If the race ends and you are not happy with the result, don't save the progress!! if you have not advanced in the championship, you will need to pay the race entry again, so always it's better lo load the last save and try again.

LAN:

Perfect for LAN parties with your colleagues and friends. TCP/IP is the way to go. Unblock eRacer.exe in Windows firewall otherwiser you'll be not able to connect.

Online:

The best game mode back in the day when the game was launched, with worldwide leaderboards and classifications, that now it's sadly dissapeared. "Man-Machine-Modem in perfect harmony" as a concept, that worked really well.

7.) Cars
eRacer has no licensed cars, but very influenced by real world automotive, nice car selection. This ensures to avoid licensing issues (the fact that this game is launched in 2025 in Steam is the best example), but also the team make great efforts to create kind of realistic and belivable autos.

Itas Sprint-Xs

A Civic EG6. The best car to start in the game, to initially see how the physics engine and inertias works. Easy to handle, narrow and compact to avoid obstacles, difficult to roll, but also significantly slow than others.

Exel Sportster:

Its real counterpart would be a Civic Del Sol. Similar low speed to the Itas Sprint-Xs , a bit more fragile and delicate at the corner exit. A good looking car, but rather useless once more powerful machines are unlocked.

Mantis VRS:

A mix between a Ford Mustang in the front lights and a BMW M5 in the rest of the car. The best car in the game by far. One of best top speeds, narrow car to fit on every track, awesome handling and cornering speed, difficult to roll if driven properly. Your best option for track records and difficult championship races.

Proteus VVT:

Toyota Supra MK2 on the back, Toyota Supra MK1 on the front. One of the best cars, with really good grip and handling, just take care on the jumps as it's easy to roll. Amazing look and really nice render in the intro. The game cover's car and the marketing image of the game.

Aero-Tech SX:

Pretty similar to an Honda NSX with a big rear wing and Lotus Esprit style tail lights. In my opinion, one of the avoidable cars. Not specially good at handling, very fragile, easy to roll and unstable on landings. Even with its awesome looking when on the track, and the fact that is unlocked so early, it's easy replacable for better options.

Ferreno GTV:

An obvious renamed Ferrari with modified head and tail lights. In my opinion, the best looking car of the game and my favourite. Very good in speed tracks like Indy Oval, Fishing Village or The City. Great handling and cornering speed, but it's somehow really sensitive to control at the exit of slow corners, so you must be smooth enough on how much pressure is applied on the right foot.

Dominator GTR:

The Porsche 911 GT1, probably the most spectacular looking car of the game, that does not correspond to its performance. Too wide and fragile in comparison with other cars, and tends to fly easily when jumping. You can win in speed and wide circuits, but it's not the best choice. It has the best looking interior IMO. You should be smooth at slow corners exit to avoid wheel spinning.

Sand Scorcher:

A joke car introduced by the developers as the last "surprise" in the game. Not so useful due its low speed, but curious enough to take a ride, funny to see against the other AI cars and nearly impossible to roll. Honestly a deception when you unlock it and don't know what it is (you expect something like a supersports or racing car).
8.) Tracks

Town Centre

Not the easiest track to start, but it's a great example of what will come later. Take care with the initial jump when entering the warehouse part (go in straight line to avoid roll, brake to does not crash with the wall) and master the two hairpins to have a nice speed on the back straight.

Scrap Yard

A track that fits perfectly in the game, a crazy environment for crazy racing. In the initial divided section, it is significant faster to go straight from the start/finish line, and then go on the inside in the first exit of the warehouse. Also on initial laps it's probably better to take the inside to avoid the AI and make some overtakes there. You can cut some meters and keep the right speed on the last section in the "S" corners to avoid loose time.

Freight Yard

Another great track based on a warehouse, with usually tons of chaos assured. Avoid at all cost the crossing sections controlling the AI cars in the minimap, and take care of the pillars of the last section. In this last section you can try to cut some meters or do ir more safely. Just take care on the final ramp that gives you access to the start/finish line.

Chemical Plant

Fun track with some obvious dangers. Always control where your opponents are in the minimap to avoid them at the cross sections of the track. If they are close, you can use the ramps, but take those in straight line or you'll easily roll. At the narrowest section, take the outside line to avoid crash or to loose tons of speed, and do the same on the last corner to avoid the inside obstacles.

Aircraft Carrier

One of the best looking tracks, also really fun to drive. Brake on the first corner to easily take the ramp. The first section drives you in the streets of the port, easy to master, to later enter the lower and upper decks of the carrier. Take care on the ramps when entering the carrier sections to avoid roll your car. In the last hairpin, avoid loosing speed for the next long straight, you can achieve this by even using the walls as help to turn, or using the handbrake.

Stone Quarry

One the most annoying and challenging tracks in my opinion. Apart from the nasty hairpin that would need to negotiate taking care of the speed, the cross section where you have to check all the other cars to not crash, there is some turns not easy to nail, plus passing under the truck.

Stately Home

A quite easy layout, but with some slippy corners where you will have to take care of your speed, some obstacles to avoid in the main garden and two 90º turns where you can use your handbrake.

Grim Up North

An easy layout track where the main challenge and danger are the post lights. Be smooth and control your racing lines. You can cut a lot of meters in certain corners, gaining precious time.

Indy Oval:

The only "real racetrack" present in the game, not without some challenges, as the infield section is offroad. Brake before entering the offroad sections, take care in the inside hairpins, the jumps if there is any other car around, and specially when returning to the tarmac oval section, as depending on your jump it's easy to roll or loose time.

Car Park

My favourite track, probably the best of the game. At the beginning, take care of the two level changes and then on ramp that goes down straight into a wall, by slowing down. You have to memorize all the inside section, mastering all the countless hairpins with the use of the handbrake. Take care of not rolling at the last ramp before the finish line.

Hill Climb

Pretty long track that has some slippery ice sections. You can take a shortcut at the downhill section, cutting some distance and the haripin, but you should practice this before as it's easy that could go wrong and gets you rolled or crashed, or take too much damage along the laps. At the main straigth, you can go inside tunnel or take the outside section. Really hard braking zones where you have to learn the braking points to negotiate the corners with the right speed.

Fishing Village

Another long and fun track to master. At the town, you can go at high speed, take care when the streets starts to narrow, in the castle you should aim to cut as much distance as you could, and not roll or takeoff in the ramps in the different ramps inside the castle walls. In the beach section there some shortcuts shortcut making straight a couple corners. Pretty tecnhical section in the sand, the last obstacle to avoid is the arch that precedes the town section again.

The City

One of the longest and more difficult tracks, specially concerning the annoying AI, which tends to be really fast in this track specially on Professional Championship. At the beginning after the roundabout, as the streets go really narrow, choose carefully your lines and avoid the AI at all costs if possible. At the highway tunnels section, stay far of the walls as the high speed could make you spin on the minimal contact. Brake carefully after the long straight before taking the left corner to avoid a crash with the wall that could make you spin. And brake enough again after the start/finish line to take correctly the first roundabout.

Boy Racer

The bonus track of the game, an Scalextric/Slot toy racetrack layed on the floor of a kids room. Great joke by the developers, that included even its own game "eRacer" playing in the computer on the desk. Just normal corners with the obstacle of the narrow chicanes, the exterior cubed-wall that has a trap in form of direct wall, and the jumps that you want to make as straight as possible.

Additional DLC Tracks

- WIP --

Ice Eight
Storm Drain
Bus Station
Military Base
Tarn Henge
The Quarry
Goldstone Park
Dyson Dam
Tweed Bank

If you want the additional tracks not present in the Steam release of the game, check out my other Steam guide where you can find everything you need.
9.) Additional Topics & Stuff
There is a bug present in version v1.15 that allows you to build insane speeds on straights by repeateadly pressing the hand brake. This was banned immediately in online racing and patched in version v1.17 (current Steam version). If you want the old version, leave a comment below and I'll upload the exe file of the initial release bugged version.

The game developers were thinking on release new cars as DLC after the launch, but lately they only launched tracks (that most probably were WIP during the development of the game) and not cars. This can be read on the next interview: Link

"At release we will have ten cars, and 14 environments, plus a bonus track and possibly a bonus car as well. Although building tracks for cars is relatively easy, but very time consuming, we hope, post-release that we'll add tracks for download. "

Initially and immediately after the game launch, they launched a free DLC that included Ice Eight and Storm Drain. After a couple months, they launched a paid DLC in the official website (at 4,99 pounds price) that included Bus Station, Military Base, and Tarn Henge.

Enjoy, have fun and great e-Racing :)

I tried a new version of ddrawCompat, but it was unstable.
Sometimes the screen would lighten up, but most of the time it stayed dark.
I think I will use dgvoodoo2. So far this one is more stable. (In fact, it's best to leave it at the default for comfortable operation.)

The Steam Input issue worked fine after I reinstalled the game!

However, when I adjusted the dead zone on the analog pad, it became inoperable.
Sorry, but the layout you published was a digital input, which was insufficient for me.

By the way, this game natively supports Xinput, how is this possible?
If I can figure that out, it would solve the xinput problem I have.

Strange...on new safe file I unlock a VRS on Scrapyard map, then VVT on Freight Yard, and from that I only see new maps (with is correct) (Im on Stone Quarry). Amateur difficulty.

Hi @MMM0n3y, thank you for your kind words. I have no problem of screen being dark in Windows, only on Linux/Steam Deck, that' something I'm trying to troubleshoot.

If you have the problem of Dark Screen in Windows, I would suggest to use the ddraw version that I put in the guide (you can find the link in section num. 1).

As for the controller issue, I've tested some of my xbox controllers and all of them are working fine. Please, can you try to apply my community layout to your controller? I posted it yesterday in the community Layouts so I would suggest to use it and see if the problem reproduces. In my layout config I use the analog stick for the wheel steering. I have default key assignation inside the game options.

I'm also working on an HD texture pack for the game, to improve even more the texture resolution, which by default is only 256x256. As soon as I have some improvements, I'll add to the guide.

Great guide. Thanks for making it.

By the way, does it solve the problem of the screen being too dark?
Using dgVoodoo2, the brightness will be appropriate.

Also, when using the xbox one controller and assigning the steering wheel to the analog pad, Steam input did not work. (I tried adjusting the dead zone but it was ignored.)

I would like to know if there is a solution, especially for the Steam Inuput issue.
