In 1979, amid the global tensions of the Cold War, North Korea, emboldened by political instability in South Korea (after the assassination of President Park Chung-hee) and silent support from the Soviet Union, launches a surprise invasion into South Korea. The United States, Japan, and other regional allies rapidly mobilize. Japan, although constrained by its post-WWII constitution, commits its newly modernized Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) to protect its territorial waters, secure the Sea of Japan, and prevent North Korean naval units from threatening supply lines or conducting commando landings.
A joint U.S.-Japanese naval task group is launched to intercept and destroy North Korean naval forces.
