Yeah getting Groove Points can be a pain. My method was to spam special moves, try not to use normals or throws as that can deduct points and use super combos to finish foes off. I was inspired by this guide: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/arcade/562996-capcom-vs-snk-millennium-fight-2000/faqs/9345
I made a save state two fights before the fourth one, and in one of my retries, I got 2 additional Perfect victories. (The screen on the actual match doesn't acknowledge it like CVS2, but the Victory screen does, on your overall score) so I think that a certain amount of Perfects, perhaps 2-4 might also be a requirement, I'll have to test again to keep track of how many I get. I'll also try and test your Super Combo finish at low health theory.
Oh, I neglected to add that bit about Super Combos, I just kept trying to get as many as I could because this game is quite stingy with Groove Points, haha. Thank you for the contribution, I'll add that onto the list!
I've just managed to get the Morrigan & Akuma encounter, I cheesed it with Joe: the CPU (on easy) doesn't seem to be able to block his slash kick, and the double hurricane upper gets a lot of counters (especially on Sim).
I very easily ended up with 100 GPS that way.
I was under the Groove threshold (around 66 iirc) but still encountered Evil Ryu. While I was over the Groove threshold for Orochi Iori (around the 70s and at one point at the 80s) yet kept facing Nakoruru.
I remember when I finally encountered him (using Orochi Iori himself funny enough), my health was low and I pulled off a Super Combo KO on the last foe on Third Match. So that could be the additional requirement but I can't say for certain.
You'll need at least 4 Super Combo KOs to encounter any of the bosses anyway (it mentions this in game). You may want to add that.
