Retaking Love Company Ridge [Mission]

September 14th, 1942. After fighting all morning long the Marines have found themselves pushed back to the bottom of the ridge and with the enemy occupying the crest. At noon, the men of Love Company finally gain the support of a single mortar and with rifle grenades, hand grenades and assorted small arms, they push the Japanese off the ridgeline into the ravine at the base of the ridge. The firing would continue sporadically all day long on the 14th but no further Japanese offensive actions continued. It is believed over 100 Japanese soldiers were dead with many more wounded. The final attack made during the September offensive was over and the first major attempt at taking Henderson Airfield was over. Often forgotten in the conventional retellings of the Battle of Bloody Ridge, Love Company Ridge or Tiger Hill, was a smaller fight but was no less important. The author of the book “On The Canal” Ore J. Marion stated “They were as tough and stubborn a band as any fighting men that the United States military has ever been fortunate enough to produce. No communications, no artillery or mortar supporting fire, they still stacked those attacking Japanese while protecting that ridge with only some old rusty barbed wire and tin cans of pebbles.”
