From the first play-thought personal recommend you to play range weapons instead melee weapon.

The skills and perks

for the first of your points should focus on firearms, health, Trading.
for the first of your perks you should get, good student, reading, fast hands, more critical.
you should buy all the book available thought out the game, remember got the reading perk first.

The ammo and heal kit

got as many ammo as you could, you don't want to run out ammo when fighting with zombie.
both food and heal kit would give you hp boosted, still you should use the food first.
below are the ammo list

Weapons tips

got as many grenades as you could as reserved it to wipe out boss monster and horde.
the gas tank would wipe out huge amount of zombie horde so shoot it when time right.
you could carry two kind of weapons as same time, still if you back-bag still space left you could save third weapon like pistol this kind of small arm for safely.
you don't need two same type ammo of weapon.
you profile page would give you the second weapon as you choice (about arrived in levels 4).
