How to play as a goalkeeper
By PLVTOCRVT
The author of the guide has been playing soccer and has been a goalkeeper for 10 years, and after buying the game in early access, sat through 72 hours straight. So here will be a guide on how to catch balls. I will share my experiences in the game and life that will help me play better in rematches

What does soccer experience matter in a game?
Yes! It does. Button pressing is one thing, you can learn it in the game. But soccer intelligence at high ranks already requires more conscious things like playing in a team, understanding how to open up in free zones, close zones in defense, etc. But it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like losing the ball in the field and that's fine. On the goal it's more complicated - lost the ball = missed the goal
The basics of game control
If you're reading this section, go to practice mode. The creators of the game will explain everything to you.
Position selection
Now let's get down to the action. The choice of position in rematch is the same as in soccer. The goalkeeper stands in the penalty box when the opponent attacks and his course is directly facing the opponent. At the same time he changes his position if the attack goes on the flank/semi-flank. Below are screenshots from the game in free play with the position of the goalkeeper and the ball (imagine that the opponent is running towards you with the ball).

Opponent with the ball in the center

Opponent with the ball on the wing

Opponent with the ball on the half wing

Next and one of the most important
In goalkeeping, there is such a concept of "goal shooting angle" - this is the area from which an attacker can effectively shoot at the goal, and the goalkeeper must close the space as much as possible to prevent a goal.

How is the angle of fire determined?
  • Position of the ball - the closer the attacker is to the goal, the greater the angle of fire.
  • Position of the goalkeeper - the goalkeeper should be on the line between the ball and the center of the goal to minimize the open area.
  • Proximity to the goal line - if the goalkeeper comes forward (e.g. when going one-on-one), he reduces the angle of fire.
Luckily in the game, if the hit goes straight at you, autosave occurs. But depending on the distance and position of the attacker, your position decides. Let's take a look at the 2 axes of position selection

Width axis
There are 3 positions: wing, half-flank, center.
  • Center - goalkeeper's position on the goalkeeper's line, in the middle
  • Half- wing - goalkeeper's position just behind the goalkeeper's line, a little further from the center, a little bit towards the near post
  • Wing - goalkeeper's position is on the goal line, the goalkeeper stands at the near post
This arrangement is on the screens above, this positioning allows you to close automatically in the flanks of the near corner, which is the easiest to hit the striker and gives the opportunity for a save in the far corner

Height axis
The height axis calculates the distance from the striker striking. It is divided into 3 zones, which must be aligned with the width axis. The length is from soccer with a 100m by 30m field. To adapt the metrics in rematch the picture below

  • Blocking zone - 3 meters or less from the ball, in which the goalkeeper can block the shot
  • Reaction zone - 8 meters or more from the ball, in which the goalkeeper has enough time to catch the ball
  • Red zone - 3 to 8 meters, in which the goalkeeper does not have time to react and catch the ball, nor to block the shot effectively, so if the kicker is in this zone, he has a big advantage over the goalkeeper.
I think readers have an IQ above 100, so no additional comments are needed
Types of possible strikes from the opponent
With the theory of soccer finished, let's move on to the game. In the rematch at the time of 19.06.25, three types of goal kicking tactics were revealed.

Basic shot
Celik simply strikes the goal from any position. Here we follow the goalkeeper's positioning principles above

Cross from the flank and kick
It is more difficult here, to reflect such an attack requires visibility, which is problematic if the opponent is behind you on the far bar, and on you near. Ideally, the defense needs one defender who will cover the attacker and prevent him from striking. It's a matter of random, this situation is not countered if in the team ******. I can only give two tips: pray and look at the mini map - monitor the position of the attacker in the penalty box.

Beat the goalkeeper 1 on 1
This is easier, but requires a very deep understanding of your position. Going 1 on 1 starts if the attacker is already in the penalty area does not just strike at the goal, although he is in the red zone of the advantage from the theory above. Most likely the man wants to throw the ball over you by performing the "Rainbow". For what we have the following plan to solve the situation:

1. Exit to the block zone, stand in the conditional 2-3 meters from the attacker, cursor in the middle of the player, keep the axis of width

2. He has 3 options to hit you - there will be an autosave (40% probability), to move to another zone in the red strike zone (20% probability), to throw you over the board from the goal side or to make a "Rainbow" (40% probability). On the third option, you have 0.5 seconds to press the “jump up for the ball” key.

Pass across the board over the goal + kick
A common tactic for fooling around in a rematch. Two attackers or one attacker shoots up over the goal and makes a pass to himself or an ally into an empty net, causing the goalkeeper to animate a save. What do you have to do? If you have a normal position, just wait for the shot. If you realize that the ball is flying into the goal - make a save. If you see in front of you or on the mini map that the ball flies with a bounce into the goalkeeper's area - go to the drop point and shake the jump up.
Reflexes or anticipation. How to understand where a goal is going to be kicked
What else interesting I wanted to suggest. Rematch is a kind of soccer shooter - players usually make kicks at the goal with a cursor. I have formed an understanding that you can mentally visualize the direction of the striker's cursor, and therefore the direction of the shot. See.

On the screens you can understand that the model of the striker, as a rule, moves forward in the direction of the cursor. That is, at the moment of impact the model is directed towards the impact. If you continue to play, you will notice this factor.

Player model is directed to the flank, potential shot goes to the near corner

Player model is directed to the opposite flank, potential shot goes to the far corner

This way you can anticipate the direction of the blow, of course it does not work with quick kicks, there is randomness. But as a rule, a quick kick is used already in the block zone.
Conclusion
I hope the guide was useful, and it will reduce the % of drains and schizoid saves to randomize my teammates in the rankings. With respect to the goal scoring angle, the image showing the flank is a little unreliably off-center for this game, due to the amount of curve you can apply - both top-spin and normal curls.

In my goalie experience IRL, the rule of thumb was to make sure you can cover both posts with one jump, lest in the flank example, you can chip it over the keeper. Fine angle IRL, but definitely not as prominent in-game.

Horrible situation to be in, regardless whether IRL or in-game.

Very nicely put together, one thing you didnt mention tho, good thing to learn for new keepers and keepers in general, PATIENCE, try not to jump at every oppertunity, that way you'll not get baited with the backpost shots and avoid being in a bad position after jumping when the ball didnt even hit the goal or a teammate managed to block it

great stuff, honestly. but,in the end, most people will just yell "keepers" a few times and then just do whatever the hell they want.
