IMPORTANT: How to restore the missing music.
By Varsk
On the 20th of June 2025, an update was pushed to the game which has removed significant pieces of music from the Steam release of The Ur-Quan Masters. This version of the game is now inferior and will not provide a true experience of this amazing classic. This guide will help you to restore the game to how it should be and hopefully help new or returning players get the experience of this game that they're supposed to.

Method 1 - SourceForge UQM
Simply download and play the original SourceForge version of The Ur-Quan Masters. This version is distributed under a different licence and will always be immune to whatever legal changes Pistol Shrimp is forced to concede to with this Steam release version.

SourceForge UQM Link.[sc2.sourceforge.net]

Select the installer that is relevant to your OS and it should be a simple download and install.

The Good News!
Steam UQM and SourceForge UQM are save compatible and even save in the same folder. This means that once you download SourceForge UQM you'll be able to load up your save from the Steam version and continue playing, your playthrough is saved and you do not need to restart the whole game. Hurrah!
Method 2 - Fix Steam UQM
Alternatively, you can do some simple file replacement on the Steam version of UQM to get the music back. On the same page where you download SourceForge UQM[sc2.sourceforge.net], scroll down to Content and download uqm-0.8.0-content.uqm AND uqm-0.8.0-3domusic.uqm.

Place uqm-0.8.0-content.uqm in Steam\SteamApps\common\Free Stars The Ur-Quan Masters\content\packages and replace the existing file.

Place uqm-0.8.0-3domusic.uqm in Steam\SteamApps\common\Free Stars The Ur-Quan Masters\content\addons and replace the existing file.

Now, the Steam version of UQM should be fixed with the music restored. By wary of any future updates that might remove it again.
End of Guide.
Please do not harass the developers, the original composers or anyone else involved in this issue.

When recommending the game to friends or content creators please do your part to bring attention to this issue so that they get the true experience of this game. I advise you all update your reviews of this game to mention this issue and to help point new players in a direction where they are able to get the same experience of this game that all of us did. Thank you.

P.S. For content creators, the legal issues only apply to the developers distributing the game commercially on Steam, you will not get a copyright claim from having the music in your video/stream so don't worry about that.
