Overview
Hello, this guide will help you obtain the "Paladin" achievement for Cuphead, with the most optimal bosses and steps that you should take.

  • NOTE THAT THIS ACHIEVEMENT IS FOR THE CUPHEAD DLC EXCLUSIVELY.
Step One - Obtaining the Broken Relic
  • The Broken Relic is an item obtainable from Porkrind's Emporium and can be purchased for the cheap price of 1 Coin. Porkrind's Emporium can be located next to the climbers' podium in Isle IV.

  • 3 Coins are obtainable by going to Buckley, the newspaper cat at the bridge.

  • Equip your Broken Relic.
Step Two - Obtaining the Code
  • This step will be RANDOMISED for every player, make sure to pay attention to the next part. Beware of spoilers ahead if you want to figure out the puzzle yourself.

  • Go to the podium next to Porkrind's Emporium and speak to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place people. Note that each interaction has a general direction that they hint towards.

  • Refer to the image provided. Notice how the person says "downright"? This is a clue to the 1st position of your code, which is quite literally "down-right".

  • Repeat this for the other two people, with the 1st person being your second position and 3rd person being your third. Below was my combination - I have marked the important information in bold where the direction is.

1st Hint - I always win! I am downright awesome!
2nd Hint - I left downtown in a hurry, and I forgot my gear, I'll settle for second.
3rd Hint - Third place? I guess things can only go up from here!

Order of podium interactions - middle, left, right

  • Once you have all three parts of your code, you can proceed to the next step.

Struggling to figure out your code?
    1st Hint
    • I can't believe I've won! Things are looking up!
    • There's no way the others could have caught me! I left 'em in the dust!
    • I'm the winner and all is right in the world.
    • I may have won, but I don't look down on anyone for trying to compete.
    • As a winner, I never gave up! Left 'em looking foolish!
    • Leave it to an upright citizen like me to win the whole thing!
    • I was the first to the top, and those losers were left down at the bottom!
    • I always win! I am downright awesome!

    2nd Hint
    • Second place? I've had it up to here with second place!
    • Second place! The only thing left to do is get better for next year.
    • I may have gotten second place, but I think I did all right.
    • I've been down all morning, but this second place finish has me smiling!
    • If the judging was left up to me, I wouldn't be in second place.
    • I got up right at the crack of dawn just to come in second!?
    • I left downtown in a hurry, and forgot my gear. I'll settle for second.
    • Second place just ain't right! Down one place from last year.

    3rd Hint
    • Third place? I guess things can only go up from here!
    • I thought I had left behind being a bum. Third place! What a joke.
    • It ain't right! I trained too hard only to come in third!
    • Worse than last year! Down to third place.
    • All I can do is throw my hands up. Left to wallow in third place.
    • They think they're better than me? They can stick it right up their nose!
    • My pals cheered me on, but I let 'em down. Left the race in third.
    • It's downright criminal they let these other jokers compete.
Step Three - Activating the Nightmare
  • Head on down over to the graveyard next to the Howling Aces boss fight.

  • Interact with the graves in the order of your code. An image has been provided with the names of each gravestone for further clarity.

  • The middle tombstone should play an animation and you'll be able to access the Nightmare.

  • You will be transported to the Angel and Devil boss fight.
    • The best shots for this fight are either Crackshot or Chaser due to their homing capabilities and allowing you to focus on dodging the projectiles the Angel and Devil shoot at you.
    • This boss only has one phase. It has 800 hitpoints.
    • The Angel will shoot non-lethal projectiles at you, while the Devil shoots lethal projectiles.
    • Your character will always face the Devil, and turning around will cause the pair to invert, switching their positions.

  • Beating the boss will also grant you the "A Horrible Night to Have a Curse" achievement.
Step Four - Fetch me their Souls
  • Equip the Broken Relic, if you unequipped it for the Angel and Devil boss fight.

  • You will now be tasked with upgrading the Broken Relic via boss kills. Each boss awards a certain amount of points, and surpassing the point threshold will unlock the relic's final upgrade and award the achievement. I have listed a table with all the data values below.

  • The Broken Relic will force your HP to 1 and will randomise your shot every single time you stop firing, or dashing.

  • Cycling your shots for the most optimal weapon against a boss is recommended.

  • There is a chance that your Broken Relic will cycle onto Heart Ring (granted you own it already). Parrying objects will sometimes increase your HP, so it is best to continuously parry objects given the opportunity.

  • Points will only accumulate on Regular/Expert mode. Simple mode will reward 0 points.
TOTAL POINT REQUIREMENT: 16

Boss type

Isle II Bosses
2.5
Isle III Bosses

Isle IV Bosses

The easiest bosses to achieve this are (with cumulative points):
  • Goopy LeGrande - 2
  • The Root Pack - 4
  • Hilda Berg - 6
  • Cagney Carnation - 8
  • Djimmi the Great - 10.5
  • Beppi the Clown - 13
  • Werner Werman - 16
  • If you are struggling with any of the bosses here, you have the option to get your last remaining points with the mini-bosses in the King Dice fight.
  • During the Werner Werman second phase, you can crouch in the bottom-right corner of the screen to completely cheese the fight. Cycle your shot onto Twist-Up and you can easily pass this stage.
