Softlocks Warning
By falloutdude83
Guardian is a straightforward and decent Metroidvania that delivers what it promises - especially considering its budget price. However, it suffers from bugs that can, in some cases, completely lock you out of the game if you make the wrong decision.

This guide highlights potential situations that can lead to softlocks, so you know how to avoid them before they happen during your playthrough.

During my playthrough, I encountered three situations that could cause serious issues - but there may be more, so keep that in mind.

As a precaution, I strongly recommend backing up your save files from time to time. You'll find them here:

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Guardian

Just back up the User_Data subfolder. If you ever get permanently stuck, you can simply restore a previous save and try again.

Softlock #1

Early in the game, on the first map, right after you acquire the dash ability, there's a bottomless pit (as shown in the picture). Technically, it's possible to cross using dash, but be careful - once you're on the other side and potentially trigger the checkpoint in the next screen, you're stuck in that part of the map with no way back.

Avoid this section for now. Wait until you've unlocked the ability that lets you crawl along ceilings - that way, you'll be able to safely move back and forth through the area.

Softlock #2

After defeating the bird boss, a spring-like bumper appears on the right side that launches you high enough to reach the green gem. Use it immediately - don’t go down a screen to activate the checkpoint first. If you do, the bumper will disappear the next time you enter the screen, making it impossible to reach the gem again. And since that gem is a required item to complete the game, missing it will leave you stuck.

This isn’t exactly a softlock, but it’s worth flagging: the door shown in the picture should be opened before collecting the 7th gem. You can unlock it using the charge attack, which becomes available around mid-game. Although the game allows you to revisit and clear all maps after obtaining the final gem, this particular door will no longer open once the gem is acquired. As a result, you’ll be locked out of an item and unable to achieve 100% completion.
