Quick Guide:

If something breaks when you’re drilling, you’re probably going too fast. Don’t just go full throttle into the asteroid. The drill head rotates to allow for the drills to clear out all the rock that might get in the way. Be patient and let the drills do their thing.

To start the drill head rotating, simply turn on the Advanced Rotor block. Similarly, turn the block off to stop rotation. This is also bound to quick slot 2.

Drones should face backwards both when tethered (with landing gear) and when docked (with connector).

Tethering points are located on either side of the ship. The drone’s own landing gear (located on its belly) should face towards the Providence, making it possible to double-lock. Remember to hit ‘z’ to turn off inertial dampeners on the drones when you’re traveling.

Docking is done using the connector on the underside of the ship. The connector has two spotlights on either side of it. When docking a drone, switch to the docking cameras and position yourself so that both cameras are in line with a spotlight. That means that the drone is aligned.

Author’s Notes:

This ship has its origins in an old design that I made about year ago. At the time there were many more limitations in what you could do with drills and rotors, and so it ended up not being anything like what I’d hoped for.

This time I feel that I’ve come significantly closer to my original vision with the design: a mining craft that drills deep into an asteroid in order to relatively quickly get to ores and minerals that lie at its center.

The addition of two mining drones was something that occurred to me as I was reworking the shape and realized that there might be just enough room for a drone to fit there. So to accommodate this I’ve made a number of changes to the 701m drones as well, including the addition of docking cameras on the drone to help with docking alignment.

All in all I’m happy with how the ship turned out and how it synergizes nicely with the drones.

I hope you enjoy :)

Fluff:

Wartime greatly increases both the importance and the risk associated with procuring resources within contested systems. The Incarri answer to this was the Providence. Though it is too small to be classified as a mining barge, it fills a very similar role while its small size and signature radius helps it to stay hidden from long-range scanners.

It is a ship designed for covert mining operations in contested or even openly hostile territory. Therefore, it is also unusually self-sufficient for a mining ship of its size, carrying with it two mining drones and boasting significant cargo space as well as heavy armor plating in case of an ambush.

As anyone with even a passing knowledge of asteroid mining will tell you, the minerals and precious ores that are sought after are seldom found on the surface. To get to them, it is often necessary to first break through thick layers of rock – a task that is both time consuming and wasteful.

By the very nature of covert missions, time is of course of the essence, so the Providence was designed with a drill capable of digging the most direct path through the stony prison to the treasure held within. Once the initial tunnel has been dug, the mining drones take over. Using the newly opened pathway to reach their goal, they hollow out the pocket of precious material before returning with their prize.

While questions can certainly be raised about the unethical nature of the Incarri’s politics, one must acknowledge their ingenuity.
