Introduction
There are a handful of documents around the internet covering this subject. However, I personally found them either incomplete or not detailed enough.

While working on my "Designated Marksmen" guide I had to study some of the scopes anyway, so I just decided to go ahead and create a complete catalog of all the scopes and sights in Arma 3.

Ranging methods will NOT be covered in this guide.

This guide is long and has a lot of pictures, so in order to save your scrollwheel from an early retirement, I would advise using the bookmarks. Also, I apologize for the clumsy formatting of the guide, but Steam's formatting tools are very rudimentary.

NOTE: it has been brought to my attention by [REF] Issen, that the in-game menu information regarding zoom capabilities of scopes is not accurate. He went through the game files and provided me with a listing of the actual zoom levels, based on FOV calculations. For this reason, scopes will include an additional detail, which is the true zoom value as it seems to be set in the game files.

How to use

It's an ACO... just put the dot over the bad guy and shoot.
The point of the ACO is for you not to need to have half of your point of aim occupied by metal. It should grant a bit more situational awareness.

This sight becomes mostly useless above ~400m.

How to use

This reticle seems to be inspired by the real-world GAP reticle.
The reticle uses milliradian markings (like mil-dots), so any adjustments you use on any of the other milliradian marked scopes still apply to this one.

I made a guide with more in-depth information on the subject of mil-dot adjustments for scopes used on designated marksman rifles. You can find it here.

How to use

The DMS is the only marksman scope that does not follow a milliradian configuration. It seems to be based on the Russian PSO scopes, given its use of bullet drop compensation chevron markings, and a stadiametric rangefinding tool.

The markings do not coincide with the ballistics of the different rifles.
Here's a list of "adjustments" you should make when using this scope on a designated marksman rifle:

Rifle
Adjustment
Cyrus
set zeroing to 300m
MAR-10
set zeroing to 100m, past 600m aim high
Mk1
set zeroing to 300m
Mk14
set zeroing to 300m, past 400m aim high
Mk18
set zeroing to 300m
MXM
set zeroing to 200m
Rahim
set zeroing to 300m, past 400m aim high

Remember to aim high (or higher) if the rifle is suppressed.

The reticle uses milliradian markings (like mil-dots), so any adjustments you use on any of the other milliradian marked scopes still apply to this one.

How to use

The reticle on the LRPS uses a milliradian configuration. It seems to be almost identical to the army variety mil-dot reticle.

It has a center dot, and two orthogonal lines that intersect at that center point. Along either of those two axis, on both sides of the center dot, you will find 4 mil dots. These dots can be used to both estimate the range to a target, and to compensate for bullet drop while aiming. Both these subjects are extensive, and shall not be covered in detail here.

For range estimation using Mil-dot scopes go here[www.furorsniper.cz]. (link to a .pdf file)

For bullet drop compensation while aiming, check this guide.

The reticle itself is very simple:

How to use

The MG variant seems a bit easier to use by leaving the zeroing at the default value and using the reticle drop marks to compensate.

The standard variant seems to require careful ranging and zeroing, and some trial and error.
Acknowledgements and stuff
All the information and material shown in this guide was taken directly from the in-game Virtual Arsenal, with the following exceptions:
  • the images for night vision modes, in scopes that enable night vision, were taken from google search results;
  • the true zoom values, which were gathered from within gamefiles by [REF] Issen

I apologize once again for the shoddy formatting. I did the best I could with Steam's guide editor limited formatting tools.

If you find a mistake in this guide, please inform me so that I may correct it.

Many thanks to [REF] Issen for his feedback regarding true zooming in the game files, as well as his donation of the relevant data, which I put into the guide's current version.

I hope you enjoyed this guide.

Tested the DMS on an MXM-surpressed and unsurpressed. The little dot above the chevron will hit at 200m when the rifle is zeroed to 800m. The tip of the chevron is where the zero is.

Did I miss something or is that just wrong?

RE: ARCO/RCO , you also notice that the range tick markings decrease in width with range. The width of these horizontal ticks are approximately the width of a mans shoulders, which can be used to approximate range of the target.

RCO , this explains this scope(ARCO is similar)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qo6qgKrIiNc

FYI: as explained in this video. On the RCO the bottom of the top red line is approx 100m , not the top of it. You have a few errors in the guide...but in general good effort.

@STUFFISH
Mildots are the most common way to do that, without using a laser rangefinder.

This is a better explanation for the layman (what mil-dots and milliradian are and how to use them to determine range). For scopes that use mils, all you need to know is the mil size used by the scope.

Basically what you are doing is taking a know distance on the target (ie ~ height of a man) and comparing it to a mil size on the scope to calculate the distance.

Does anyone know of a guide that does cover ranging? I’ve been looking around for like an hour now :/ (maaaaaaaybe I got distracted by guides on playing dead and stuff)

What about a DMS on a M320 LRR? What is the correct zeroing?

Yes, that top dot is definitely not for 100m. If you stand 300m away from another soldier standing upright and aim the crosshair at his feet, the top dot will precisely meet the top of his head. It's for ranging your target.
