How To Use DarkPlaces In The Steam Version Of Quake
By Mankybus
This is a quick guide on how to set up DarkPlaces with Steam, as people found WinQuake and GLQuake to be extremely annoying or just flat out don't work - DarkPlaces works very well and is meant for modern operating systems - it's very simple and I'll show you how.

First you need to download DarkPlaces
You have to download DarkPlaces before you can even do anything - and I'll show you where you can get the latest build from the developer of the engine itself; http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/download.html - download the latest stable version there, it's a small download so you won't be waiting for very long.
Unrar the file to the Steam Quake folder
Once the download is done you will have to unrar the DarkPlaces file to Quake's steam base folder which is most likely to be; program files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Quake - the Quake folder is a clusterf*** of different files but don't worry, nothing will be overwritten at all.
Change DarkPlaces.exe to WinQuake.exe
Firstly find WinQuake.exe, create a backup folder in the main Quake directory and place WinQuake in there. Now you want to rename DarkPlaces.exe to WinQuake.exe as this is the file that Steam uses to run normal Quake.
Voila!
And at this point you should be done! Open up Quake and select the main Quake option (Not GL, QuakeWorld or GLQuakeWorld - just normal Quake) and it will be running Quake on the DarkPlaces engine and the Steam overlay will be available for you to use and it will track your time with the game!
Feel free to spice it up
DarkPlaces doesn't come with the insanely high resolution textures, models or anything like that - you have to download them yourself as DarkPlaces on it's own is still Quake except shinier and less of a pain in the ****ing *ss to deal with. Explore mod sites and Quake sites for mods such as Quake HD and Quake Reforged for a true modernized HD Quake experience.

DarkPlaces also has native mod support - while the mod section will look like a mess due to the many Quake files inside the directory, any mods you install in that directory will be available for you to use in that section.

So have a play around, but be careful not to destroy the Quake folder - if things go wrong, uninstall Quake, delete the directory and reinstall everything again and you can start again from there.

Have fun!

If you guys want to try and have a little more up to date version of Darkplaces, the last version that still loads and looks fine is the one from the 29th August 2017. You can find it on the official Icculus File index at https://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/files/

Or a direct link here
https://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/files/darkplacesenginewindows64only20170829beta1.zip

The 11MB links are the ones you want, the smaller downloads only include the SDL executables rather than both SDL and WGL versions. The 2018 versions of Darkplaces have a bug with Real Time Dynamic Lights if you care about that fancy setting.

Also, the SDL executables of Darkplaces tend to have texture scaling issues and won't load texture mods properly.

I don't know how to find find, much less open, the file folder for Steam's version of Quake. Honestly, I don't know how to do anything other than click the desktop shortcut to make the basic game run.
Basically...How do I do quite literally everything? Where do I look on my computer (Windows 10 OS)? How do I open the file folder or command stuff or whatever?
I'm very tech-illiterate. No tech-savvy whatsoever.

I'm having the same problem as Yogurt... I rename the sourceport to winquake.exe, but when I launch Quake on Steam it replaces it with the actual Winquake. Dunno what to do here

DP runs just fine on my Windows tablet, BUT!!!, would running DP through Steam allow the controller support?...I’m ok use Keyboard and mouse but a controller would be soooo much more practical for portable gaming.
