The Plan
WELCOME to Smiledozer's Sunless Sea Get Rich Quite Quick Scheme

Note: Please read fully before attempting this. It will result in deaths of Crew members and require a decent amount of Echoes and Supplies. It may also require a bigger ship, which can be obtained using this method.
-------------------------------------
Just a quick little introduction as to how this plan works

Everyone should know by now that making your Echoes in the Unterzee is not done by trading or other shore tactics. The main way to make big amounts of echoes in shorter spands of time is by moving the storyline along and doing the 'Quests'

However, there is another quite simpler way to go about this. The tactic involves simply travelling to the surface; Naples, Vienna, the Mediterranean. Making money quickly is an easy thing on the surface and it involves a few simple steps.
More experienced Captains will know this process, but this is great for beginners who want better weapons, engines, ships, or simply just need the cash.

Note: There is a step in this process which I perform which may have a different effect depending on your character. This step partains to being involved with The Calender Council or the Anarchists. My main character is a Veteran of the Invasion of Hell, Seeking his father's bones, and I like to make trouble along my way. You character and background type may not effect the process, but working with the Calender Council definately has its consequences...

And now, set things in motion.
The Execution
Preperations
Whatever boat you have, use it to travel to the Cumaen Canal. The bigger boat is the better bet, as it holds more crew. You will need crew members to die in order to repeat the process. Your beginning boat holds 10 crew members and does not have much cargo room, but I believe it can work with a bit of patience and time. Building up your money with my method and then buying the Caligo-Class Merchant Cruiser and continuing is probably the best thing you can do to keep this method ongoing and keep those Echoes flowing.

To begin, stock up at Wolfstack Docks and make sure you have about this much cargo:
- Fuel (at least x22 to be exact)
- Supplies (x1 or more).
- Full crew prepared to die for the noble cause of you getting rich. The essence of capitalism and my plan.
- If you can find the cargo room, bring as much Dark Drop Coffee as possible.
- I also recommend your ship should have little or no hull damage, although this does not affect the process much, it's always a good thing to have a ship with no damage.

Once you're set, travel south to the Cumaen Canal.

At the Canal
When you arrive at the Canal, avoid contact with or destory enemies nearby and get into port, whichever is most convenient.

Make sure any fuel you expended getting there is replaced so you have at least 22 Fuel and 1 Crate of Supplies.
- Click Travel to the surface. This will expend x10 Fuel and [x1] Supplies.

Once you're on the surface, there will be a few options. Click Travel to Naples (Expends x1 Fuel)

Naples I
Consider Naples your trade hub. There are several options and I will soon get into what you should do. However, let's divert to make some extra money first....click Buy A Ticket to Vienna which will cost 10 Echoes.

Vienna
When you're in Vienna, you can optionally sell that Dark Drop Coffee to Cafe Ferstel for a nice sum. This will make you a healthy amount of extra echoes depending on how much Coffee you brought with you.

There is also the matter of the Calender Council (the Anarchists). I believe that this storyline is gained by earning the trust of the Council in Vienna. It may also be a random occurence, but I am unsure. Please leave a comment if you are positive as to how the Calender Council quests are activated.
If you wish to work with the Calender Council and bring your story down this path as I did, every time that you're in Vienna and selling coffee, go ahead and secure the Materials for "the Work". Delivering these to London when you come back will give you x10 Fuel and a decent amount of Supplies and other rewards...as well as consequences to the main story >:]

Warning: Working with the Calender Council, you may end up not being able to sell coffee to the coffee house anymore. I will not explain further.

When you are done in Vienna, go back to Naples.

Naples II
This is where you money making actually comes in. The more crew you have to expend, the better. With the sum of money that you do have, buy some extra fuel supplies. When you have enough, click Carry Cargoes Around the Mediterranean. Be prepared. Each time you do this you must keep an eye on your Zailors, because some of them will die each time. This varies from about 1-3 crew members depending on if you're sucessful or not. If you are, you make 500 echoes. If you aren't, you'll make 200 which is enough to cover the trip and then some.

When you return to Naples, refuel and resupply. This is a relatively cheap to do, but its an extremely tedious process.
- Fuel is 15 echoes a barrel
- Supplies are part of a challenge. If you win, you will recieve 1 Crate for about 5 echoes.

The catch with resupplying on the surface is that there is no store. You must click Purchase Fuel or Purchase Supplies one at a time. One click, one barrel or crate. (I really wish they would change this, but I suppose it does make you work a little harder to all those Echoes!)

CAUTION: While clicking each time to buy Fuel, be very careful to NOT click Spend Time On Shor. In some cases, this will kill your crew faster, and you need them to die on the mediterranean, not a beach. You will also not be able to see your hull capacity.

MORE CAUTION: While you are performing all of this, travelling the mediterranean, going back to Naples, etc. Keep an eye on the number of crew members still alive!! Depending on the size of your ship, you'll want to keep at least one of them alive, right? Just enough to make the very short trip back to Fallen London and make your repairs, hire more doomed crew members, buy more coffee or maybe even a fancy new ship.

Also
As soon as you get back to London, Fuel is 10 Echoes a barrel there. If you have a cargo ship or end up buying one for this method, buy as much fuel as you can at Wolfstack just so you don't have to go through the tedium of buying it on the surface for 15 Echoes a barrel.

Before You Leave...
Before you finally run out of Crew members or you're satisfied, you'll need to have a certain amount of fuel and supplies to get back down to the Unterzee. While you're at Naples, stock up on all that dirt cheap fuel and supplies. You can take it with you. In order to travel back down to the Unterzee, click Return To Avernus (Costs x1 Fuel). Once you're back in Avernus, click Return Below which will cost the same amount; x10 Fuel and x1 Supplies

Following these steps will make it quite easier for you to further your Quest storylines. As a consequence of this, you will be rewarded with whatever the Quest has to offer.
Repetition for Effect
Repeat this process untill you have as much money as you like or you are out of Crew Members. Remember to try and keep at least 1-3 crew members so you don't die. This process may take a while, but it is definately worth it

There are a few different places that you could go to in order to further your Quests. Furthering this guide I am now including some suggetions as to what you could do with the massive amounts of Echoes you can earn on the surface.

Note: These are only suggestions as to where you can go and what you can do with the thousands of echoes you now own. Everyone has their own unique playstyle, so I'm attempting to include a decent list. If anyone as any suggestions please leave a comment and I will list you as a contributor.
Making the Most of Your Echoes
Note: This section is incomplete at the moment. It is currently expanding and I could use anyone's help if they know of great places/ways to spend Echoes at. Please leave a comment if you're interested in helping to make this a better guide!

Taking your well earned surface echoes from my Surface Echoes method and using them to improve ships and buy cargo is all well and good, but if you've been to the surface multiple times and you get bored with just buying cargo (Fuel, supplies, goods) or simply bored with the repetition of going to the surface, try spending a few thousand echoes on certain Quests or locations of interest. Below I've listed numerous locations or Quests in which you can spend those echoes to further your game.

Ships

Your starter boat doesn't have much, eh? Certainly by now you've invested in a new ship.

The specs of your starter boat are as follows:
Ligeia-class Steamer
Ship Weight: 1000
Cargo Hold: 40
Crew: 10
Hull: 75

These two boats are highly recommended for making the most of my method and your story.

Phorcyd-class Corvette
This is an amazing attack boat. It features enough room for a nice Deck gun and a Foward slot for a Torpedo gun (These help take down enemies way quicker than an Aft weapon would). It can man a crew of 15 and has a hold of 30. This is a perfect boat for light hauling or fantastic for attacking enemies. The Hull health of 200 with an additional Iron +5 Bonus is enough to keep yourself afloat while destorying enemies of 500 health or lower.

Ship Weight: 2000
Cargo Hold: 40
Crew: 15
Hull: 200
Iron: +5

Using this boat with the Surface Echo Method is also decent, but you will find yourself making more trips back to London, more often.

Caligo Class Merchant Cruiser
This is the ideal ship for applying my method. It is not, however, the best ship if you're looking to attack enemies over 200 health. This ship has a great hull strength of 300 for defending and taking blows from enemies, albight smaller ones (i.e. Bound Sharks, younger Angler Crabs, etc. ). It is the ideal cargo ship of the game (..obviously) and especially for my method because of how much it can hold. It will move rather slowly because of its weight, but given the proper engine (I have the C&H Admiralty Special) it will sail as fast as any other. There are also additional bonuses that come with this ship.

Essentially, when you buy this ship, you sacrifice your attack ability for an ability to move more cargo than any other ship. I recommend you use the best Deck gun (Its from Caminus yards) for foward attacking. Also, with the Caligo-class, you now have an Aft slot because you sacrificed your Foward slot. With the aft slot you can either choose to use a gun (best for defence and zailing the unterzee) OR you can head to Gaider's Mourn and buy the Concealed Compartment which will let you stow away up to 20 items in case of a police raid on your boat when you land back in London. This is what i use, because an Aft gun does do me much good in my style of play.
Don't worry though, you will still be able to sink Tramp Steamers and Pirate Steamers given the right amount of Hull health.

Ship Weight: 5000
Cargo Hold: 120
Crew: 30
Hull: 300
Veils: -5
Hearts: +5

Buying either of these two ships will help your game tremendously and clearly, if you can ever afford it, get the Maenad-class Frigate or just go all out and get that Eschatologue-class dreadnaught! along with your We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat Acheievement.
------------------------------------------
Houses
Sometimes your just want to get yourself out of that crappy hotel you're staying in. There are major advantages and disadvantages to buying a home in the unterzee .

Elegent Townhouse
You'll spend a decent 1000 Echoes to get it, but it's worth it. There's a study with a half-dozen things to build to further your story or just for making treasures.

Zeeside mansion
It costs 10,000 Echoes, so no, I don't have it, and I'd rather buy a Dreadnaught. Still, one does have to wonder what this Mansion might mean for your game....hmmm....
-----------------------------------------

Quests

Mt. Palmerston
Mt. Palmerston is a good place to catch a few of the more interesting storylines of the game, but the particular reason we're travelling here is to Dig Amongst the Ruins. This is a Challenge Event, so you have a cance of being successful or failing.

Doing this will cost you 2 Crates of Supplies and your Terror Increases by 5 or 10 each time you dig, but you stand a good chance of finding some nice treasure. If you've bought your Elegent Townhouse, some of these things can be used in your Study to create Unique Items. Successful digs will uncover Lamentable Relics, Outlandish Artifacts, and Memories of Distant Shores. Since you have thousands, or even hundreds of echoes on you, just keep buying a steady amount of Supplies from Mt. Palmerston's stores and dig until you're satisfied...or horrified.

The Uttershroom
One of the Quests from Venderbight, after you talk to the Curator, is to collect "7 Colors". There is a fantastic guide available to collect all 7 of the colors and this is a kinf od paraphrase of that.

It does not cost much money, but after leaving Wolfstack Docks with at least 7-8 Firkins of Prisoner's Honey you will head to the Uttershroom. When you reach the Uttershroom, buy 7-8 Blemmigan and use them to populate 7 different islands. When you finish head back to the Uttershroom for unique items. One of these items you can bring back to the Curator to give to him as one of the colors. This in itself will earn you more money while also completing a couple of Quest lines.

The 20 in "concealment=20" is a measure of how much it affects your chance of success at smuggling. It is not a quantity of items.

I need to rewrite this whole thing. It's longer than necessary and it's missing a couple things. Sorry all I've been slacking on my Sunless Sea community involvement

Please add to the preparation section that you need SOME echoes to travel to Vienna, cause that's not included. I just spent 10 fuel to travel to Avernus and i have only 3 echoes left and feel like a total fool.

I'll give this my stamp of good guide, beacuse this is good guide and burning your crew is involved which is very nice also because you secure their future from potential of becoming drownies.

The Mansion can help you retire to a Life of Luxury (along with 30,000 echos), and store extra Captivating Treasures. You can use those treasures in future playthroughs to jump-start your finances and buy the merchant ship early, skipping the tedium of grinding for a better ship... or cut the grind for the Life of Luxury retirement in half.

The mansion is required for the ritre to a life of luxury ambittion.
Ratguts 23 Jul, 2015 @ 3:13pm
You should add an optional gain of money to buy a bunch of supplies on the surface and then sell them at the iron republic for a profit of 20 echos each. then you can buy bulk fuel makeing the fueuture profit much larger by not haveing to buy as much fuel on the surface.
Also if you get recent news each time you go to london you can tell about the unter zee on the surface to get extra supplies and fuel and a piece of information or something(cant remember the name) but it sells for 5 echos to the antiquitarian so more profit for doing nothing

Good advice, thank you. Yeah the coffee shop was not shut down before I made a ton of money off of it. So I believe you're right about the supremecy level.
Kryo 15 Jun, 2015 @ 9:03pm
I've noticed it's random on how high the level of anarchist supremacy will go before the coffee shop closes is very random. I've had it happen after 3 favors done. Also a side note to everyone - you should run all 7 shipments for the council at least on one captain - you'll get an extra 25 iron on every subsequent captain.
