Workaround: War Hero Level Crash to Desktop
By ali tayyab
The War Hero level has is notorious for CTDs at random points specially on Nvidia hardware. The solutions posted on various sites did not work for me. These included not crouching, turning off V-sync and using Win 7 compatibility mode for the game.

However I did find two solutions that have worked for me on multiple systems.

Solution 1:
For those with an Intel CPU with an integrated GPU this solution is most apt. Simply run the game on the integrated GPU and you should be able to complete the level without any CTDs. Once done, switch back to your discrete GPU. You don't even need to disconnect/ remove your discrete GPU to activate the GPU integrated in your Intel CPU. The general principals to activate Integrated GPU with your discrete GPU connected to the system are:
1. Make sure that the integrated GPU is activated in the BIOS
2. Download and install latest Intel Integrated Video drivers for your OS
3. Shutdown PC, plug your monitor cable (HDMI, DVI etc) into the video out port on your motherboard
4. Restart PC
5. You should boot into your OS
6. You can use Intel video control panel to adjust 3D settings. I ran the game on an Intel Pentium G3230 at 1080p no AA and it ran at a playable frame rate. On an Intel 4670K it ran better.
7. Once done with the level make sure you watch the cut-scene and let the next level start before properly quitting the game.
8. Shut down PC, plug video cable into your discrete video card, restart PC.

Solution 2:
This is for those who dont want to switch to integrated GPU or are not using a processor with an integrated GPU (like those for LGA-2011 socket etc).
I have discovered that if you speed run through the level it is possible to complete it without a CTD. I have done this twice and both time I was able to get through with a CTD.

Miscellaneous:
1. I don't have an AMD APU so can't say if it will work on those, but as most of the CTDs are experienced on Nvidia GPUs, i suspect they should work fine
2. Google is your friend if you are not sure how to switch to Integrated GPU in bios or the instructions above are not clear

I found a fix for this by going into documents->front mission evolved->graphics, opening that in notepad and changing fullscreen value from 1 to 0.
Hope I was of some help

Turning off V-sync and compatibility mode helped on 2 different systems. Thanks.

Reloading while stationary worked for me

I was getting random crashes in the first two on-foot stages. The second was too long to speedrun, and none of the solutions in this guide worked.

I was able to solve my problem, so I'll share another fix for others to try. The fault seems to lie with the game's terrible implementation of v-sync. I was able to stop the random crashes by turning off v-sync in the game's video options, then enabling v-sync in the nVidia control panel. I also enabled triple buffering and disabled the shader cache in the nVidia control panel, but didn't do any further testing to see which of those three changes actually did the trick.

Easy to navigate once you realise reloading guns is the main problem. Pick up the enemy shotgun when you run out of machine gun ammo, and vice versa when the shotgun is empty. Blue ammo packs on the floor completely refill your total ammo but most importantly automatically refill your main weapon and rocket launcher to full. Incredibly handy for when you need to fight wanzers on foot, on the hardest difficulty they require 6 rocket shots, with your rocket holding 3 shots combining that with an ammo pickup every base is covered.

don't dilly dally all day though, time seems to factor in too even with this strat meaning you'll have to speedrun your way through enemies which isn't a problem, most can be ran by with only 3 enemies usually blocking a door from opening

The tip from @WolfOfLight helped me a lot. just always reload then standing still and you are good. Thanks!

another workaround is to not reload while walking/running. ive found reloading while dashing crashes it the most offten. not for everyone but hey, give it a try
