Gettng the programs to get started.
First things first, if you're gonna mod L4D2 (in general really), you're gonna need two programs to actually get started.

First program you're gonna need is called VTFEdit.

Here is the download link:
http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?c=178

The next program is called GFCScape.

Here is the download link:

And one program that I reccommend (if you need a good photo editing software) is Paint.net.

Here is the download link:

Anywho, once you've got those programs downloaded, now you will move onto using the programs.
Using the programs and finding the files.
So once you've downloaded the programs, here's what they should look like.

VTFEdit

GCFScape

So now, you want to change the menu icons right?

Here are the files you need to replace
  • menu_mode_campaign.vtf
  • menu_mode_mutation.vtf
  • menu_mode_offline_coop.vtf (note that this file doesn't really change much, but I'm putting it here anyway)
  • menu_mode_realism.vtf
  • menu_mode_realismversus.vtf (This one's in a strange place, but I'll tell you where it is later.)
  • menu_mode_scavenge.vtf
  • menu_mode_singleplayer.vtf
  • menu_mode_survival.vtf
  • menu_mode_versus.vtf

The file location is a bit complicated to explain, just go to the next tab.
Use GFCScape to find the original files.
So first things first, you're gonna need to find the original files to get the file requirements.

To find them, open up GFCScape, then click on File, and click Open.

Once you've got it open, go into your computer and find the steamapps folder.
For me, it is this
Once you're there, go into the Left 4 Dead 2 folder, then go into left4dead2. Once you're there, scroll down and you should find a bunch of .vpk files.

Click and open the one that says pak01_dir.vpk

Now that it's open, click on the plus on materials, then scroll down until you find the folder called vgui.

Now you should have found the original files.
One thing you may be wondering, "Where is menu_mode_realismversus.vtf?"

That file is located under the Left 4 Dead 2/update folder under pak01_dir.vpk
then just go into the same location (materials/vgui) and the files should be right there.

Once you've found all the files, just copy and paste ONLY the .vtf files into a folder where you can easily access them.
Use VTFEdit (and your photo editing program) to find/edit the files, and finish your mod.
This is pretty much the last step to creating your custom L4D2 menu mod.

Once you have the files, open them with VTFEdit and click on the info tab. It will tell you the resolution that it needs to be to work for Left 4 Dead 2.
(This is a screenshot from my Custom Vocaloid Menu Icons, but it's basically the same thing)

But one more thing before I forget, to get the files that you want the right size and such, use whatever photo editing program you have, and make sure that the picture is 256x256 resolution.
To get the file into a vtf format, just save the same image that you saved as a 256x256, and import it using VTFEdit, then save it as a .vtf file. Also be sure to name the file the same as the file you want to replace, so for example you want to replace the single player menu icon, name the file menu_mode_singeplayer.vtf and it should work just fine.

Once you've got all your files done, and converted to a .vtf format, put them in a folder path which would be materials/vgui
Here's a screenshot example of my Vocaloid Menu Icons.

Once they're in the correct folder path, convert the folder to a vpk and upload it to workshop, and there you go!

Happy modding!

(I do not feel like explaining any further than this, so any more questions you have, just google it.)

So I followed the tutorial 100%, but my icons don't show up at all. I've named them right, put them into a vpk and everything, yet I only see the default icons.
