Welcome!
As mentioned in the item description, this nifty guide should quickly introduce you to the reply format of the Steam Community User Discussion, which will be referred to as SCUD from now on. Make sure to keep an eye for any details I've misssed and things I can add for future reference. With no further ado, let's begin!
What is the SCUD?
SCUD acts just like a forum board with a few limitations and perks. Some of these perks include:
  • Direct links from Youtube/Steam Community are automatically embedded
  • Edition/deletion of posts
  • Quick "quote" button for replies and/or references
  • Formatting styles for added sass EMPHASIS extra stuff
All these should be tools for some tidy replies and an organized discussion, but today, we shall talk about the quote format for replies only.
How to reply to a post
The most common way to reply is as simple as it gets.
  1. Look at the post you want to reply to.
  2. Move your mouse over to the right corner of the post. Out of the two buttons (Three if you wish to reply to yourself), click on the one that looks like a Return arrow. The text upon putting the mouse wheel over the button should say something along the lines of "Quote this message in your reply"
  3. Click on it! The post should appear quoted below in your reply box:
  4. Post the rest of your reply below and submit it. The final text format should look something like this:

This ensures the following on your post:
  • Anyone who sees it can be directly linked to the original post you are replying to, including the person you wish to reply.
  • It separates your reply from mixing with the rest of the text
  • It saves copy/paste time for you and everyone else who wishes to reply in a chain (also known as "quoting your quote back")
  • It formats the reply automatically with username and post link, saving a lot of time searching for replies in the discussion.

This is the traditional way to reply to most forum posts. Other times, you can also reply by simply adding "@ (name of the reply target)" at the beginning of the text and directly typing your reply after that:

You can always omit any of these formalities. Directly quoting is the most common way to reply in the discussions, and the @ format is rarely used. Most of the time they are just to specify to whom you reply and they aren't mandatory in order to post. However, they can avoid confusion most of the time, so make sure you can specify who are you talking to in your post.
Other tips
  • Try to space out paragraphs in your posts if they happen to be pretty lenghty. "Walls of text" are easier to read by pressing the enter button every four/five/six sentences.
  • Please separate the quote from the reply to make your replies readable, or just plain avoid quoting at all and adress the desired user in the same post.
  • Typing Like This Can Get Pretty Annoying For Most Discussion Regulars. Sure, There Are No Rules Against Capping All Words, But It Can Be Frowned Upon By The Community. This Comes From Personal Experience And Should Be Taken Lightly.
Outro
With this, you know all the basics to simple replies on SCUD! Congrats!
Now go out there and share the world your stuff and ideas!

I encourage some feedback in the comments on how I can make this guide any better. I plan to add formatting style stuff in the future and any other community tips I manage to find. Until later!

It looks like too much effort went into this just to teach people how to quote.

It's beautiful.
