The Beginning
Rust is a multiplayer survival game. In this game you'd find pros and cons, both with nature and with players, or your computer (like me). With this guide you might have a few more chances of survival than you had before (applies to newcomers), but don't follow it as a bible. What you get depends on amount of players on the server, your computer, your previous gaming skills and where you spawn.

  • :

In the beginning you normally start with nothing but a rock and a torch (in Rust legacy you'd start out with a first-aid kit aswell but due to updates they removed this), so you will have to start from scratch unless you're LAN'ing with someone, or have friends/friendlies playing on your server. Some people are nice, some are not. Just like in real life, so in the beginning you should not trust anyone who doesn't give you sh*t or isn't co-operating.

  • Following on, you'd need to craft tools so you can hunt and build a home. The first thing you'll probably need is wood. Needless to say, you find wood by smashing your beloved rock against a tree, or by finding small logs on beaches.
By default your rock will give an output of 10 wood per hit. Be careful not to break your stone, as it'll be hard to find logs and things on the ground!

  • When making your first item; whch I recommmend would be a Stone Hatchet , you'd need Stones. Stones can be obtained by hitting a rock of ore, or by picking them up from the ground. Luckily there are lots of Stones lying around on the ground, and they will actually grant you +50 Stones per Stone you find on the ground, so spare your rock, and find Stones on the ground.

  • The Stone Hatchet* is not really hard to obtain. It is something like 200 Wood and 100 Stones, if I'm not wrong, in cost so consider making 2 or 3 at a time, it's really worth to have good tools by hand. Be careful, because your tools and weapons will slowly become worn and damaged, until a point where you can't use them anymore. By using a Repair Bench you can renew them. (this costs much so you must have the resources anyways.)

  • With your new Hatchet, go chop some wood. Wood is good to have by hand. You should try to gather 400 wod at least. This is because you start out with low health and much hunger, so you'd better go off hunting soon. But before we can hunt, we need to craft the weapons we need. By consuming 300 Wood you can obtain a Wooden Spear . (By consuming I don't mean you'll EAT the wood, but consume it into crafting) You should use rest of the 400 wood you obtaied earlier to make a Camp Fire . The fire will keep you warm and dry, aswell comforting you. But the main purpose for our use should be cooking food.
(* the Stone Hatchet gives you +25 Wood instead of +10 Wood per hit)

  • If you don't find many Stones around your place, it can be useful with a Stone Pickaxe, so you can obtain more Stones faster. The Hatchet is useful for wood and animals, but s*cks when it comes to ores/stones. Likewise with the Pickaxe, as it is meant to be used on hard surfaces like metal or stone.
Hunting, Food and water
  • :

As you now are equipped with weapons and tools, it is time to start hunting. The best time to perform this is by dusk, dawn and when your PC runs more than my sh'tty 7 FPS base framerate. Thing is, When you hit an animal, it would normally start running away from you, like you would have done if someone chased you with a Spear. Yep, the Spear is effective, but it is hard to use if you haven't used it before. (Aim therefore a bit higher per distance to assure your hits!)

Some animals, like Bear and Wolf doesn't. They'd start chargng you if you get too close or attack them. They're really hostile, so only way to survive them is by killing. If you spot a horse, you should start to lurk towards it, so you don't startle it. Horses are damn fast, so be sure to throw your Spear right. (To throw your spear, simply hold-release Right Mouse-Button)
If you are lucky enough to kill it, it can still disappear.
The Unity engine usually has some bugs and ragdoll imperfections, so I have experienced that Horses and Boars glitches into the stone landscape or into the ground. At this point you can only accept it and try to not whimp after you used 10 minutes chasing it down. In other scenarios there will be players trying to steal it from you.

When you kill an animal, you obtain 4 resources: Meat, Bones/Skulls, Cloth and Animal Fat. The Meat is not well edible before you cook it on your Camp Fire. Once you have cooked it, you should start to eat.
Your health increases towards 100 maximum HP when you eat.
Also, if you're brave enough, Humans can be slaughtered and eaten too, but they don't give much food, and neither animal fat, bones or cloth. You'd also feel bad for killing that 4sshole.

Bones can be used when you're making Clothes. Clothes are made by using cloth and sometimes combined with wood or Metal Fragments. When using bones you can make extra protection against explosives or bullets, so it's not just useless!
If you don't have enough bones for an item, you can crush a skull if you have one and obtain a few more.
Cloth is also really valuable. Aswell as using it for Clothes, you can use it to craft other tools and misc items, like a Sleeping Bag (30 Cloth + 100 Wood) so you can respawn in your house or your place if you kill yourself.

Now it can be useful with a longer distance weapon: The Hunting Bow . You also need arrows for this bow, so be sure to have atleast 25 stones and 10 wood per 4 arrows. When hunting or defending 4 arrows can sometimes not reach to your purpose, so be sure to have at least 10 when hunting.

Thirsty yet? After a while your thirst will rise (hydration will drop) and you'll need water. If you are lucky enough to find a Water Catcher (like I have found dozens of times) you can siply press E to take a cup of it, or hold E to open up the container's UI. Inside you will see how much there is left, and if it is, you can click the cup icon until you got 250 - 300 hydration points.

If you have Cloth and wood, it might be smart to craft one yourself so you don't need to steal from some guy's hard work. (I don't quite remember how much it costs but) For rougly 100 cloth and 100 Wood, you can obtain one yourself. If you have a 2x2 base, you can leave one of the rooms without roofing, so water can drip into the Catcher.

The last item obtained from Hunting is the Animal fat. This is something you MUST have to make better weapons. Because now you'll need a Furnace to smelt your Ores into Metal Fragments or Sulfur.

You need 200 Stones, 200 Wood and 100 Low Grade Fuel to make a Furnace.
Low grade fuel (LGF) is made by using cloth and fat and gives out following: 7 LGF per 1 Cloth + 3 Fat.
To make 100 LGF you would roughly need at least 15 Cloth and 45 Fat. Therefore you need to hunt a lot before settling down.

Building a simple house/base
  • :

You may ask: Why don't we make a big house to store sh't? Well, thing is that the bigger the house, the higher visibility of it, leading to greater chances of being Raided. Therefore, I usually do with a 1x1 house or 2x2 with a door. This is because after a while you would be upgrading it, and it requires a lot to upgrade a big house. *Therefore, start out with one foundation and 3 walls, before placing a doorway with a door in the 4th slot. Finally add a floor on the top so you don't get wet or blown by an explosive that easily.
You might notice that you can't place a Furnace directly onto wood. This is because the wood will become too hot, therefore gme makers have made it so you can't place a Furnace on your wood floor/foundation.
To get around this, you must make your floor of Stone. Per floor block it requires 300 Stones, so mine patiently until you got enough. Walls should be made out of Stones aswell, as it is stronger and more isolating than wood, but this is optional.
By default you should consider upgrading your walls to Planks/better wood, (100 Wood per wall) so they don't fall that easy.
Lastly, placing a Wood Cupboard (1000 Wood!) in your house prevents other players from building at your house in a radius of 50 m from your Cupboard.

*(to make walls/buildings you'll need one Hammer (100 Wood), a building plan (1 paper=100 wood), and the amount of wood required: 50/25 per wall/doorway/door, 50 per foundation/floor + 100 per Key Lock)
Melting, Clothes & weapons
  • With your furnace ready it's on time to craft yourself a better weapon. This is useful when hunting or defending yourself.
With a Pickaxe you can mine ores. For our purpose it's crucial that you go for the not golden rock, as this is a rock with higher percentage of Metal Ore. When mining you can experience many times obtaining a High Quality Metal Ore.. It is also used for
The HQ Metal is good for weapons and tools you use a lot, as it lasts longer. The HQ Metal is useful when upgrading your base as you'll start to need HQ Metal to upgrade it.

  • "So how do I actually refine the Ores?"
No worry, we will start in a nice pace, and keeping it simple to easily get along.
The First thing you do is to open up the Furnace by holding E while pointing at it. This brings up 6 slots in the Furnace's UI. By browsing the Community Hub, I have managed to get the information about fast Ore Smelting:

    1. In the first 3 slots you would want to place your Ores, (split them up into three groups and place them into each slot).
    2. Then in the next slot you want to use a fuel to burn to refine the Ores. Usually, we use wood, as it is easy to obtain, but if you have a lot of ore, you may want to use Low Grade Fuel as it burns better, and makes it go faster.
    3. Finally, leave 2 slots free. The first is for the output (Metal Fragments), the second is for the burnt fuel (usually coal)

Some people tend to fill up all the slots. This requires having one metal fragment already. So usually, you'd place 3 gruops, but on this way you'd place 4 groups of ore, then place a fuel into it, and one metal fragment in the last slot.
This is useful if you don't need coal! But if you are gonna make gunpowder for your bullets, you'll have to keep them. This same technique can be applied to the Camp Fire, but usually you don't find enough meat for that.

To credit someone here for a great introduction into this subject I recommend the YouTube'r Ser Winter. This video he has can be useful when it comes to Smelting. Even though this video was posted 13th of June 2015, it seems like it is from a previous update, so it can be patched in the future after I have written this.

Now It is time to make a weapon. The Eoka Pistol is a good starter. Be sure to have atleast 200 wood beore you start. Now you need to get 50 Metal Fragments from your Furnace. This is enough to make this gun.
Now to make Some bullets for your gun:

The normal Pistol bullet has 40 DMG, with a velocity at 200 u/sec. The bullets come in 4 bullets a stack per craft and takes 3 seconds.
To craft bullets you need 5 Gunpowder and 10 Metal fragments per stack.

Now we need to make the Gunpowder first. This require that you have collected some Sulfur Ore and used it in the Furnace to create Sulfur and Charcoal. Once you have a good amount of both, you need to combine 5 Coal + 5 Sulfur to produce 1 bag of 5 Gunpowder.
So per 4 bullets it means we need 5 Coal + 5 sulfur + 10 Metal Fragments.

If we follow the 10-amount-of-amunition-rule, from when using a bow, on the bullets we will need to craft at least 15 Charcoal, 15 Sulfur and 30 Metal fragments into bullets to be able to hunt well...
The total amounts of resources you need to make 1 Eoka Pistol + 12 Bullets are then:
    200 Wood, 80 Metal Fragments, 15 Charcoal and 15 Sulfur .

After a while you'd want to get a better weapon. If you find a Blueprint for a Thompson gun, you'd like to have 350 Metal fragments and 100 wood accessable to make this weapon. The good thing is that the Thompson requires only Pistol bullets to work, but it takes 3 minutes to craft compared to the 2 minutes of the Eoka Pistol.

A good rule about Guns and ammunition is that Rifles require 5.56 Rifle Cartrigde to work, Shotguns require Shotgun Cartridge , and Pistol and Revolver require Pistol Bullet to work...
    ^^(Black stripes are SPOILER ALERT)

  • Clothes [CONTAINS SPOILERS]:
When making clothes you have a limited amount of cloth after building a Furnace, but now as you have a gun you also need protection against other people's guns. Therefore, the cheapest clothing you can get is the Burlap Shoes . they have same stats as both Burlap Shirt and Burlap Trousers (2 bullet Protection Points (PP), 20 Cold PP, 2 Explosion PP, 5 Melee PP, 2 Radiation PP and 5 Warmth PP), but in difference from the shirt and Pants, the Shoes cost 20 cloth instead of the Shirt and Pants's 30 Cloth cost.

If you're going to a RadTown , you might want to get the Hazmat Boots as they have 13 Radiation PP more than the Burlaps.

Generally, the guide to Clothes is:

    1. Check your resources
    2. Chck out the stats of the different clothing
    3. Find out where you live
    4. Make clothes thereafter.

If you're going to a RadTown , you might want to consider getting Hazmat clothing as they're designed for just that purpose.

I'm not going to update this guide, so last time i wrote this, there was no shiny flare on the rocks, no autoturrets, no heli, no bradley.... just boring Rust as it was at that time.
@₪Ziptx₪ I actually have 50+ games ;)

Why do people comment on a guide I made 3 years ago, seriously?

And yeah it's utterly useless. NO $HIT, since the devs of Rust have added incredibly much to the game I reserve my right to call it a good guide for the time it was made :csgoskull:

get lost xD
