By >//The_FALCON
Here I will show you how to choose the right Abuction Mission for everybody who doesn't use the Long War mod. Most of them are still choosing wrong without knowing!

The Beginning
This is a no-brainer:

Engineers

or Money if you REALLY need money.

But in most cases you should choose the Engineer Rewards in the early game. You need 10 x (number of already existing Satellite Uplinks) Engineers to build one Satellite Uplink.
Example
Here is a random picture from the Internet to visualize the example:

Let's pretent the abductions take place in India, United Kingdom and Brazil and we don't have any satellites ready.

We will choose to rescue India. Reasons:
  • We won't get the South America continent bonus ("We have ways") anyway since Argentina left so we can abandon Brazil as well.
  • The panic in Europe is too low to be relevant at the moment.
  • If we don't choose India, China will leave the XCOM Project.
Panic
Game difficulty is not a factor in panic increase:

The panic is decreased by 3 in the country where the mission took place and unchanged in the rest of the continent.

The panic is increased by 2-3 in every other country where the abductions took place and
1-2 in the rest of the continent.

THIS part is VERY important
The Factors
Now how do we know which country to choose and which one to ignore?

We don't want any country to leave the XCOM Project. That means we always have satellites ready for the worst case where RNGesus left us.

Most people choose the country with the most panic which is wrong in some cases. There could be already 2 countries with a panic level of 4 in the same continent as a low-panic continent where an abduction takes place. Not choosing this country will cause the other two leave the XCOM project at the end of the month.

If reaching a panic level of 5 for one country is unavoidable you should prioritize countries for abduction missions and satellite launches that are not in the same continent as your XCOM base. You already have that continent bonus so you can let them go to hell if unavoidable.

If no country is in danger to leave the XCOM project even if abduction missions are available and it's not early in the game you should choose the country that gives you the best rewards (Engineers or §, whatever you need the most. Even soldiers can be an option if the soldier has a class that you currently need because somehow the game gave you only snipers).
Notes
  • Abduction missions are available for 30 hours in Enemy Unknown.
  • Only if a satellite is deployed over a council nation at the first day of the month or earlier it won't be chosen for an alien abduction mission in that month or later.
  • There must be at least 2 council nations without satellite coverage (at the beginning of the month) for alien abductions to happen and they will happen twice a month until you successfully raid the alien base. Then the requirement is 3 council nations without satellite coverage and if it's the case then only 1 alien abduction will happen every month.

  • The following enemy types won't appear in alien abduction missions:
    • Chryssalids (and therefore Zombies, too)
    • Ethereals
    • Outsiders
    • Sectopods
Sectoid Commanders may only appear in company with Mectoids

@Dad

Heavy is awesome. HEAT ammo is practically necessary once you start to encounter robotic enemies, Rockets are great for taking out high health enemies and cover, (the latter of which got me a live capture recently) and scatter rockets are also amazing for taking out tanks. Heavies are a support class, they create new points of entry and take out high priority targets with explosives, and while they can barely hit the broad side of a barn, SCOPE helps with that, and that's not their purpose. They're a support class, not assault class.

VegladeX, that's because the game has already chosen to make abduction in those countries regardless of your satellite coverage, what do i mean? Let's say it's 1 july and the game decided that in 15 july there will be abductions in Argentina, China and France, you didn't know this of course but you still put a satellite on China because you want that sweet funding, then on 15 july you get an abduction mission on China and you're like "WTF man i put a satellite 3 days ago in there, why am i getting an abduction in there?" so XCOM RNGod says: "Sorry bud, i decided to make and abduction in there since the begginging of the month, i don't care about your satellite right now, now go there and save those poor asians"

Of course after that the game wont target China or any covered country for an abduction mission, basically the game will make the decision but it doesn't care or know if you put a satellite before the abduction mission happening, it will still happen.

Actually, it says this in the Wiki too, so I'm a bit worried...

My point was that I have satellite coverage over every country, but abductions still happen.
This conflicts with what you say.

1. you can't have more than 12 medals.
2. e.g. if the satelite is launched for germany at 31st june, germany won't appear as a possible abduction site in july. If the satelite is launched at 2nd july, germany still could appear as a possible abduction site in july, but won't for further months.
3. to stop abduction missions from ever happening you need to have only 2 or less countries to have no satelite coverage. After the alien base assault it only needs to be 3 or less.

OMG, how did you know the game gave me only snipers????
In all seriousness though, what do you mean by "Only if a satellite is deployed over a council nation at the first day of the month or earlier it won't be chosen for an alien abduction mission in that month or later."?
I currently have satellites over every nation and am farming abductions to get medals for the "Guardian of Earth" achieve, and I can assure you that they happen anyway.
tl;dr Please clarify.

All the classes seem pretty good and balanced except heavy. He's useless end game without ridiculously high aim
