How to ....
Instead of spreading around all your food buildings, make small food zones.

In each food zone place always a Storage Barn. This is inportant.
Make a food zone with a forester, gatherer, hunter and maybe a herbalist
or 3 pastures
or some fields, orchards
..... but always in every food zone place a Storage Barn too.

Now, here comes the usage of the Market. If you have a Storage Barn close to every food building then your citizens won't have to move the food to the village, instead they have to move the food to the closer Storage Barn. This way they will be more effective and faster in gathering food.
The Vendors (Market's workers) will have the duty to carry the food from the Storage Barns to the Market.

So, always make sure there are enough Vendors to carry the food to the Market. Also if the food is in the market the food distribution is always a lot better and you won't have 1 house with 500 potatoes and the other house with no food at all !!!

Happy gaming!

@ Leolore Use more buildings and less workers per building for better efficiency. At the beginning a lot of the population should work in food production. Also you need Gatherers for food diversity: protein (fish, meat, eggs, nuts), vegetables (farming, gathering), fruits (berries, orchards), grains (wheat, corn). Also they become unhappy if a lot of others die and work less efficient.

yeah, my fishermen, farmers, and hunters always starve _while harvesting and carrying the food_ I can't get to the point where I can build a market. two fisheries with 8 fishermen plus a hunters lodge with 3 hunters - and they can't keep up even with their own food needs.after everyone else dies out - when the houses and storage are all right next to each other. So, I haven't gotten this to work quite yet.

Just build 2 hunter sheds near town and you'll always have food

OK this one doesn't work -.- The idiot villagers don't know how to pick the food away from that far (the vendors either, no)

25% hunger reduction mod*

True, this is good starter advice. I think after 500 pop or so you really get a feel for how your crops and supplies move around the map, and how to better utilize things. There is also a lot of bugs relating to starvation though actually, and the easiest way to fix those bugs is the 25% hunger reduction honestly. The game gets a little futzy after you start pushing like 500-1k people imo.

My #1 advice would be don't build crop fields at all, just go with hunter, fisher, gatherer, orchards and pastures. Crop fields are the most vulnerable to food shortage and bad harvests, plus if the farmers are hungry they simply stop working on the fields.

In my current playthrough I heavily rely on trading. I only sell firewood. I built 1 forester in the middle and 2-3 outside, set the one in the middle to cut only and the others to cut + plant. I didn't build stockpiles near the foresters, but put them at the edge of town where the woodcutters are.

Also don't build foresters right next to your gatherer. Trees occupy space needed for herbs. They can overlap, but I recommend having the gatherer offset by a bit, so 20-50% of the circle is open space. I also build my barns at the edge of town, because those barns in the forest tend to fill up without anyone taking things out of them.

Another method to avoid the firewood crunh is to divide your city into food prod, wood prod and salable prod- You can supplement the wood prod by selling supplies to vendors and buying every log they have, then double down on having your foresters and herbalist combos also harvest wood- you d0on't need too to many herbs so you can sacrifice the purity of your old growth for logs later on

If you want to cut down on firewood, transition into stone-housing as early as you can manage. Building tree-nurseries to compensate is a must still however.

I like your advice, it helped me a lot. Now the big problem i have is firewood and wood, bcs its used a lot in every aspect except for food making.
