Starting out and general notes
Watch the intro with the car crash. As soon as you try to move you'll receive note #1.

Avoid the camp fire, walking into it will kill you.

Try to jump into the truck bed to receive the Trucker achievement.

You quickly run out of flashlight power and when you're out you die. So do like a true woodsman and scavenge the wilds for AAA battery packs. As with any true wilderness, there are LOTS of them lying around. Just pick them up while walking around and you should be good.

I never figured out how the score is determined, but malina10 and YalpemaG [GER] did! So here goes: each battery gives 10 points, each note gives 20 points, winning gives 100 points. Thanks!

The pause screen (press escape to call it up) has:
  • Your inventory. It has four slots and yes, there are four items to find in the game.
  • The list of notes. Here you can look at all the notes you have found so far. There are six in total.
  • The big map. It shows the whole game area and everything except for the two secret places is marked. If you want to go exploring by yourself, this map is pretty useful.
Minefield
Head directly north from where you started until you reach the wire mesh fence enclosure with lots of mines lying around. The game will tell you that loot is to be had at its center. There is a pretty easy path through the mines: just walk along the right fence.

At the camp in the center of the minefield, pick up the fuel canister and note #5. You can find it here: on the western most box
Boat trip
From the minefield, head straight east until you reach the lake. Find the jetty on the southern shore and step onto the boat for a speedy river cruise. You'll stop beneath the railroad bridge. Note #3 is hidden around here: It's up above, inside the covered railroad bridge. Pick up the extension cord that hangs next to the skeleton, then head on through the underpass and up the ladder. Don't walk on the tracks near the bridge or you'll be flattened by the train.
Secrets
Walk south by south east from the railroad bridge towards the dark brown area on the big map. This is the home of the apparition. Walk close to the door of the main building to receive the Woodsman achievement. In the shed you can meet the last forest worker.

There are two notes to be found here,
note #4: on the side of the main house, right around the corner from the front door
and note #6: on the table in the shed

In the southeast corner of the map is a gray zone, a mountain range. Climb it (jumping helps) and look around on top for a camp site. Enter the tent to receive the Camper achievement.
Train Station
Head west from the secrets area to the train station. Leaning at the old truck outside is a big axe. Pick it up and use it to bash in the train station's door. Walk in, behold the scary shadow on the wall to the left, push past the cupboard into the next room and take the magic key from the cabinet. You can pick up note #2 in this area: From the bench next to the entrance, in the first room. This is the last note to be found in the game. Picking up all six of them earns you the Notetaker achievement.
Mystic site and mindblowing action sequence
Head west from the train station to the mystic site. Your magic key has magicked away the barrier surrounding it. Do as the game tells you and walk into the hovering rocks to push them onto the plates with the corresponding symbols. Then walk into the funky portal.

Teleport !!!

Welcome to 50m from the portal, north of the river. You find yourself surrounded by fire, chased by the - now burning - apparition. Don't let it catch you or you'll die. But relax, the savepoint gods are with you. If you die here, you can simply restart the chase. You have to reach the telephone pole with the generator to survive. There, the outro movie will narrate the end of the game.

Congratulations, you've won! Well, sort of. You will receive the Fearless achievement, and if you reached a high enough score, also the Master of Darkness achievement.
Achievement list
  • Trucker: Try to jump onto the truck at the beginning of the game
  • Woodsman: Reach the front door of the apparition's home. The Secrets section above describes how to find it
  • Camper: Walk into the tent on top of the mountain in the southeast corner of the map. Jumping helps with getting up the mountain
  • Notetaker: Find all 6 notes. See the next section for the location of each note
  • Fearless: Complete the game
  • Master of Darkness: Complete the game with a score of 600 points or more. Winning the game gives 100 points, each battery adds 10 points, and each note adds 20 points. So to get this achievement you could, for example, win (100 points), pick up all six notes (6x20=120 points) and pick up at least 38 batteries (38x10=380 points). Note locations
On the pause screen (press escape to get there) press the third button for a numbered list of all the notes you have already found. See the spoiler sections in the walkthrough above for the exact location of each note.

Score is probably counting by collecting batteries (10pts) and notes (20pts)
