Trouble in Terrorist Town

Trouble in Terrorist Town, also known as TTT, is one of the most popular gamemode in all of Garry's Mod, however it can be very hard to understand for new players. This guide will hopefully teach you everything you need to know, before playing TTT.

Please note that everything in this guide is based on vanilla TTT. Some servers may have changed a couple of the things I explain.

The Basics

What is Trouble in Terrorist Town? (TTT)

TTT is a very fun Garry's Mod gamemode made by Bad King Urgrain. It is one of the two gamemodes that are included with Garry's Mod and requires you to own Counter-Strike: Source to play so keep that in mind.

How do you play?

Well, there are 3 roles. Traitors, Innocents and Detectives, but I'll get in more detail on those later. The main goal is for one of the teams to kill everyone on the other team. The Traitors need to kill all the Innocents without dying themselves, and the Innocent need to somehow figure out who the Traitors are, and then kill them. Detectives and Traitors each have their own shops, where they can buy items to help them.

Rounds

Every round has 3 phases;

  • Pre-round

This is before the round has started. This is a good time to grab a good weapon so you'll survive for atleast a few minutes. (Also remember to pray to Gaben that you'll become a Traitor.)

  • Mid-round

This is the main part of the game. This is when the roles are chosen, and all of the action happens. Make sure to always be on guard during this time.

  • End-round

This is when the end round scoreboard is shown and everyone can kill everyone without it damaging their Karma.

As repetitive as it may sound, it gets very addicting. Especially since most servers have a map change every 5-10 rounds. Now I'll tell you a little bit about each role.
The Innocent

When playing TTT, you'll be an Innocent about 75% of the time, so it would be a great idea to master the role. Innocents spawn with nothing expect a Crowbar and Magneto Stick. They have one job. To find and kill the Traitor.

If you're an Innocent, I recommend you grab yourself a good weapon like the Shotgun, M16 or Rifle as fast as possible, and just wait until something happens. As fun as it sounds to just run around and kill everyone, that would ruin the game. You need to be very sure that the person you're shooting is actually a Traitor.

How do I find the Traitors?

That's a hard question to answer, but here are some good reasons to believe that someone is a Traitor:

  • They're holding a Traitor weapon. (refer to the section "Traitor Equipment")

  • They just killed someone without a reason.

  • They didn't identify a body.

Starter Equipment

These are the items that are given to all players when they spawn.

Crowbar

The Crowbar is a melee weapon that can hit and push people. It deals 20 damage per hit.

To hit someone, press left click.

To push someone, right click on them.

Magneto Stick

The Magneto Stick is an item that allows you to pick up and push props around, as long as they aren't too heavy.

You can push props by holding left click, and you can pick up small props by pressing right click.

Holstered

The Holstered item allows you to only have your hands out, instead of any weapon.

Useful if you wanna be as least suspicious as possible.

Here are a couple of tips for playing as an Innocent:

  • Try to stay away from where most people are. This increases your chances of living longer.

  • Try to avoid shooting people for no reason. This will usually end up in you getting slain next round by an admin.

  • Do NOT use the H.U.G.E. ever.
The Traitor
The Traitors are the most important part of TTT as they're the ones supposed to keep the game going. To be honest, pretty much everyone wants to be a Traitor. The Traitor's job is to kill all of the Innocents before they get killed themselves.

You have about 25% chance to be a Traitor, so you better make it good. Here are some things I recommend doing while being a one:

  • Be stealthy. You can't just run around shooting everyone in the face. You gotta make a strategy. Maybe hide behind a building and snipe some people...?

  • Use the Traitor shop as much as possible. This is essential. Press C to open it up.

  • Always try to get atleast one knife kill. The Knife is one of the best Traitor weapons, as it only takes one or two hits to kill someone. It's just a very stealthy weapon overall.

  • Act Innocent. If you kill someone, just make up an excuse.

Traitors get access to their own little shop. Here they can buy a large variety of items to help them find and kill the Innocents. I'll show this later on in the guide.

There's not a lot more to say about Traitors. Just kill everyone except your teammates.
The Detective
The Detective is pretty much the most important person for the Innocents. He spawns with a DNA scanner, and has access to the Detective store, where he can buy a lot of equipment to help him do his duties.

The main difference between Innocents and Detectives is that the Detective has access to the Detective shop shown later on in the guide. He also has a nice little hat on his head.

Before there can be a Detective, there needs to be ATLEAST 8 players on the server. If there are any less, there will not be a Detective. There will be a Detective for every 8 players on the server. For instance, if there are 8-15 players on a server, there will be 1 Detective, but if there are 16 there will be 2.

The DNA Scanner

The Detective spawns with a DNA Scanner. It can be used to scan a corpse and see who killed it. It has it's limitations though. Let me explain what DNA is.

When someone is killed, DNA is left on their body. The amount of DNA depends on two things. How far the person was killed from, and how long ago it was. The further away the killer is, the less time of DNA will be on the body.

When you inspect a body you can see how much time is left of DNA. To gather it, left click on the body. You will see a DNA icon pop up somewhere on the map. The icon updates every 30 seconds, so just be careful so you don't kill the wrong person.

Bodies/Corpses

When a person dies, they turn into a ragdoll. This is usually called a corpse or body. Bodies usually carry a lot of information that might lead to the Traitors.

To inspect a body, look at it and press E. You'll be able to see how they were killed, what role they were and a lot of other useful information.

Tips

Here are a couple of tips when playing as a Detective:

  • Don't get too greedy. Buy a Health Station for your fellow Innocents if they need it.

  • If someone calls you to a body, go to it as fast as possible.

  • Stay on guard. Traitors usually try to kill the Detective first.

  • Is nobody talking? Buy a Radar to see how many people are alive.
Scoreboard

The Scoreboard is a big part of TTT as it can show you who's alive, dead, spectating and even unidentified, however it doesn't show all of those for everyone. To open it up by holding your TAB button.

On the top right you can see what server you're playing on and how many rounds are left until the next map change.

Like I said, different roles see different things. Here's a better explaination:

  • Alive Innocents and Detectives see who's spectating, dead and alive.

  • Alive Traitors and Spectators see who's spectating, dead, alive and also unidentified. (Missing In Action)

Here are a couple of other things the scoreboard shows:

Karma

Karma is one of the numbers shown on the scoreboard. Karma basically shows how good you are at killing the right people. When you join a new server, you will always start at 1000 Karma.

If you kill your teammates, your Karma will go down. The lower your Karma is, the less damage you'll be able to do the round after. If your Karma goes too low, you'll get Karma banned for a couple of minutes, so just try to avoid killing people for no reason.

Score

Score works the same way as Karma except it resets on map change.

Deaths

Pretty obvious. This shows how often you've died.

Ping

Ping is a number that shows how fast your connection is. The lower, the better. If it's too high, you'll probably lag a lot.
Communication

Communication is very important when playing TTT. You need to talk and listen to other people so you can work together and find the Traitors.

By default the key for normal chat is Y and voice chat is X. If you're a Traitor you can press U to talk to your Traitor buddies, and hold Shift to voice chat with them. You can change all of these in the Settings if you want.

Radio Commands

Radio commands are a big part of TTT, as they can share information with everyone very fast without you needing to scream into your mic. They are pretty much chat messages you can send into the chat with only a couple of key clicks. It's very simular to the CS:GO radio commands, now that I think about it.

To do a Radio command, press your Zoom key (Z by default), and press one of the keys. You can also make specific binds for them. Just type the following command into your console, but replace the word KEY with whatever key you wanna press, and COMMAND with the command you want.

bind "KEY" "ttt_radio COMMAND"

Here are some words you NEED to know when playing.

RDM

RDM, also known Random Deathmatch, is when you randomly kill someone, or kill someone without a proper reason. One of these reasons can be "they looked at me funny", or something salty like that.

KOS

KOS stands for Kill On Sight. It's pretty obvious what this means. If someone screams "KOS CURIOSITY!" or something like that, you better kill 'em.

Being "Proven"

Being proven basically means someone has performed an action that proves they are Innocent. This can be; killing the Traitor, calling out the Traitor or being tested in a Traitor tester. (If the map has one.)
Traitor Equipment

These are the items that you can buy in the Traitor shop. It can be opened with C. Traitors start with 1 credit, and all of these items cost 1 credit each. Here is a list along with their official descriptions.

  • Body Armor (Passive effect item)

Reduces bullet damage by 30% when you get hit.

    Default equipment for Detectives.

Toggle in the Disguise tab of this menu or press Numpad Enter.

  • Flare gun (Weapon)

Can be used to burn corpses so that they are never found. Limited ammo.

Burning a corpse makes a distinct sound.

  • Knife (Weapon)

Kills wounded targets instantly and silently, but only has a single use.

  • Newton launcher (Weapon)

Push people from a safe distance.

Infinite ammo, but slow to fire.

  • Silenced Pistol (Weapon)

Low-noise handgun, uses normal pistol ammo.

Victims will not scream when killed.

  • Decoy (Weapon)

Shows a fake radar sign to detectives, and makes their DNA scanner show the location of the Decoy if they scan for your DNA.

  • Poltergeist (Weapon)

Plants thumpers on objects to shove them around violently.

The energy bursts damage people in close proximity.

  • C4 (Weapon)

    Powerful timed explosive.
Detective Equipment

This is a list over the items that Detectives can buy in the shop, along with their official descriptions. Just like the Traitor shop, this can be opened by pressing the C key. Detectives spawn with 2 credits, and items cost 1 credit each.

  • Body Armor (Passive effect item)

Reduces bullet damage by 30% when you get hit.

    Default equipment for Detectives.

  • Radar (Active use item)

Allows you to scan for life signs.

Starts automatic scans as soon as you buy it. Configure it in Radar tab of this menu.

  • Visualizer (Weapon)

    Crime scene visualization device.

Analyzes a corpse to show how the victim was killed, but only if he died of gunshot wounds.

  • Defuser (Weapon)

    Instantly defuse a C4 explosive.

Unlimited uses. C4 will be easier to notice if you carry this.

  • Teleporter (Weapon)

Teleport to a previously marked spot.

Teleporting makes noise and the number of uses is limited.

  • Binoculars (Weapon)

Zoom in on corpses and identify them from a long distance away.

    Unlimited uses, but identification

  • UMP Prototype (Weapon)

    Experimental SMG that disorients
    targets.

    Uses standard SMG ammo.

  • Health Station (Weapon)

Allows people to heal when placed.

Slow recharge. Anyone can use it, and it can be damaged. Can be checked for DNA samples of its users.
Common Weapons
These are all of the weapons that you can find scattered all over the map.

  • M16
The M16 is a common assault rifle available to all players. The M16 is an assault rifle. The M16 has low recoil and a low fire rate. The M16 deals 23 damage on a body shot and 62 damage on a head shot. The M16 can fire 20 bullets before it needs to reload and can hold 60 more bullets in the form of 3 more magazines.

  • MAC-10
The Mac10 is a sub machine gun that is available to all players. The MAC10 deals about 13 to 19 damage per shot. If you get a headshot, you can kill them in 3 rapid shots. The MAC10 can fire 30 bullets before it has to reload and can hold 60 more bullets in the form of 2 magazines. The Mac-10 uses the SMG ammunition.

  • Shotgun
The shotgun is a weapon in all trouble in terrorist town servers available to all users. The shotgun is arguably the best gun in the game and is a great weapon at close range. The shotgun can kill instantly if shot at the head in close range and can bring the opponent to near death if shot in the chest. The shotgun makes a noticeably loud noise when fired. The shotgun can fire 8 shots before it has to reload and can hold 24 bullets at maximum. The shotgun reloads one bullet at a time instead of using magazines.

  • Rifle
This gun is more commonly known as a Sniper Rifle and is known for long range and instant kills. This gun has the lowest fire rate of all guns. It holds 10 shots in one magazine, and can kill a player in 1 headshot and 2 torso shots. If your Karma is low, it may take 3 body shots to kill a player. This is also dependent on if your target is wearing body armor. This gun can be used similarly like a Deagle because it does not have an accuracy penalty up close making one-shot kills on head shots from close ranges often. It is not recommended to fight close range with a rifle unless you are going for an instant kill.

  • H.U.G.E. 249
The H.U.G.E is a weapon available to all players in TTT. The H.U.G.E is arguably the worst gun in the game. It is a machine gun but it has a high amount of recoil. H.U.G.E. Is uncommonly used since it is often deemed a bad gun. H.U.G.E. is not good for fast kills, as the recoil, low damage, and high rate of fire will make it hard for fast kills and gives your target time to call you out, retaliate, or escape. The H.U.G.E cannot reload as it does not take any type of ammo available in the game so when you run out of ammo you need to find another H.U.G.E or get a new gun. The H.U.G.E can hold 150 bullets in total and deals approximately 7 damage every shot.

  • Pistol
The pistol is an average weapon that does not specialize in a particular category but gets the job done.

  • Glock
This gun has a fast fire rate, 20 rounds in each magazine and can kill a player with 3 head shots and 20 torso shots. It's a good gun up close but chews through your ammo very quickly.

  • Deagle
The Deagle, also known as the Desert Eagle is weapon available to all players. It goes in the secondary weapon slot. The Deagle is the only secondary weapon that instantly kills if you manage to land a headshot. The Deagle is commonly used by traitors to headshot people to kill them quickly before they have a chance to shoot. The Deagle, if not a headshot gets about 20 to 40 damage on the person if at close range. The Deagle is also accurate at long range, but difficult to master.. The Deagle can fire 8 bullets before it needs to reload. It can hold 24 bullets in the reserve at most. The Deagle is similar to the shotgun, as it kills instantly with a head shot and is an effective close range weapon.

Damagelogs/RDM Manager

Before you all start saying that this isn't part of vanilla TTT, I already know that. Just wanted to add this here since 99% of TTT servers have it.

The RDM manager is definently the most popular TTT plugin out there, apart from ULX ofcourse. What it allows you to do is view what happened throughout the round.

Even though this isn't really useful as a player, it's pretty much the only way for admins to know who's breaking the rules.

Final Notes
Thanks for reading my guide. If I missed something or you have a question, please post a comment or add me and leave me a message. A rating would also be highly appriciated.

Any biased comments will probably be removed. Instead of just saying it's a bad guide, please tell me what I could improve upon, thank you.

Please note that I did not write all of this. In some sections it says "Source" at the bottom. If you feel as if I've "stolen" some content from you, please add me and we can discuss it.

As a final note, here are a couple of servers I highly recommend checking out!

Sure with the group I was with told me how TTT works! This FAQ was more helpful than the 1 minute introduction I had during last night's session I was with.

Is it only on one server? You need to contact the Owner and tell him about it, if so.

I suggest you delete the "terrortown" folder from your gamemodes folder, and replace it with the new one:

I'm having a problem where if an innocent is killed by the traitor, the innocent automatically win. There's another glitch where the innocent would automatically win in less than a half a minute without anybody dying or doing anything. Please help.
