Guides - Creating And Editing!
By ShiftyCollie
For me, finding out how to create a guide was confusing / misleading, so I am deciding to create a guide that'll or should help you create, and edit your guide.

I cannot be 100% sure that you don't know or don't need to know anything written here, so use the subcatagorys to navigate this guide for guides!

Introduction
This Steam guide will or should help you understand how to create and modify your guide.

To see what it is I am makeing a guide for, Steam's tutorial of how to create a guide, click here.

Steam guides allow you to help users, or users help you, how to do something in a game. To do this, you need to own the product to make a review about it.
The 'Community Hub'
To create a guide, first you need to go to the 'community hub' and look in this box currently shown below.

Next, select the game you want to create a guide about (Remember, you need to own the said game to write a guide about it).
Located / Tabs
After you have done this, look in this area to the top of the page, and then click on the 'guides' button.
Two Ways Of Starting
Once pressed, under where you just pressed 'guides', a darker box should appear like below. Click on 'create your own'.

Or alternatively, there should be a collum on the right side, in it there should be a blue box reading 'Create Guide', click on it.
Basic Guide Information
Once there, you should be granted with a bunch of text, but above you, you should see three seperated lines of text, and the first one should be in a grey box. We're doing thr first one.

  • Enter the title for your guide.
This is what everyone sees, this is usually used to see if something's relevent to what they're looking for within intrest.

  • Select a branding image.
This goes along with the title, it is usually the eye catcher.
  • A description for the guide.

It is like a title, but more in-depth. People may skim read, and when they find a relevent title, they may read this to see if it is what they really need.

  • What catagories does your guide belong in?
This will make it so users do not have to search through topics that may be about everything but the desired topic, like a player looking through all guides to find handy Walkthroughs (quite hard).

  • Rights and Ownership.
This is to make sure this guide is yours, or you've been given permission to upload this
Guide Contents

  • Guide Contents
This section is where you make slices of text, just like I'm doing on this guide. This makes it so the user can easily skip to selected areas of desire.

You can add sections (divided and made into little subcatagories), edit sections and delete sections.

Inside this section, you can edit the title and text. You can also add images. screenshots you've took from in-game, and videos.

  • Images
This is just to make it much more easier when adding images to your peices of text.

  • Use Your Screenshots & Videos
This is self explainatory, this is because it is tell you the following "You can also use any of the public in-game screenshots or videos that you have already uploaded to Steam for this game. These will be accessible to add to your guide when editing individual sections.".

  • Add Contributors
This is just to allow friends and users to help you edit your guide (be sure to thank them by adding a list of players who's helped you make it)
Preview Guide: The Overview

All this is is to check over your guide to see if you should add any other improvments or remove something.

It should look something like this:
Preview Guide: Visibility

This orange bar is showing it's current state, and who can view it, this can become public by the green button mention later on.
Guide Preview: Guide Index
This box is what the public can also see, it is to skip to a certain area in the guide.

The cyan arrow is what subcatagory you're currently on.
Preview Guide: Information

This box to the right side of the LCD screen tells us information about the guide like:
  • Created By
    Who published it.

  • Catagory
It's catagory(ies) it is located in.

  • Language
It's language(s) it is written in.
Preview Guide: Owner Controls

This box to, again, the right-hand side gives a bunch of options only the owner can see like:

  • Edit basic guide information.
This is to edit the information under the 'guide information' tab.

  • Edit guide contents.
This is to edit the information under the 'guide contents' tab.

  • Add/remove Contributers
This is to add or remove names of the people who you'd like to edit this guide.

  • Delete
To delete the entire guide you just made.
Preview Guide: Author Stats

This small, but lovely box on the right side of the page notifies how many views your guide has gotten and how many people have viewed it.
Guide Preview: The Guide

This is the peice of text you just made, everyone can see this, if not, what's the point of writing this review or even thinking about writing one?
Guide Preview: Publish Guide
When you feel as if you're happy, press the green button labeled 'Publish Guide'.
You can come back later to edit it if you're told to update something by commenters.

Tips
  • Create a good and eye catching title / image to attract visitors.

  • Use the 'Formatting Help' button if confused on how to do certain codes.

  • Remember to press 'Save' every now and then during writing so you don't loose anything.

  • Add people only you trust, doesn't matter if your friends trusts a guy you don't know, don't add him.

  • Your guide will be shown with 0 stars (unrated) until 25 users have upvoted your guide.

Mh, I'll think about it and put it on a list. I'll put random ideas to it and randomly come to it every now and then and see what I put fits well.

I will credit you if I do decide to do it!
Every time you change your name once I upload it and you want to, message me or comment on it, your profile would be in the developer comments just to make sure!

Some sort of public information bulletin or something. Because people need to know what they are.

...even though this has been done to death and it won't help the situation at all.

Now that I think about it, it's a stupid idea.

So, by "shitfest" I belive you want me to describe the areas of the communities, what it's like with guides, pictures and playing with and compare with TF2?

Something about the shitfest of the GMod community. I think you might have the concept of a series of "How to actually do something that doesn't involve large amounts of shitty memes, outright stupidity and unwanted hate" guides.

Your welcome! I know this as I was trying to find a way to create a guide, and steam's guide wasn't really helping..

I will continue on making more guides like this, any suggestions on what you'd like me to make a guide about next time?

Thank you for posting a guide which is actually a real guide on something. Those are pretty rare these days.
