Getting Set Up
If you've messed around with the level editor, you know that you can only fight certain factions as certain characters. Your dreams of making a Jacket vs. Police or Pardo vs. Guards map will never come true, right?

Wrong. While your viable options are limited (due to only certain kinds of sprites being present), you can hypothetically make any character fight any faction with this exploit. Any character can be like the Hammer!

To start this off, create 2 blank levels: one with a character you want to play with, and the other with a character who can fight those enemies by default. Only place down the car and player character.

My example will be making the Pig Butcher able to fight the Mafia/Gangs by using Evan's template. We'll call the Pig Butcher level "Character" and the Evan level "Enemy."

Finding the Folders

With our two levels done (Character and Enemy), we are prepared to swap the data. But most level folders have confusing names, so you'll have to get to the source through the game. Highlight the level containing your character of choice and press the O key.

Once the folder comes up (if nothing happens, alt-tab out of the game and check your desktop), click on the "level0.obj" file. This is where all of your placed objects are. Right-click it and hit "copy."

(Ignore the highlighted "level.ver" file; it isn't part of the steps)

Next, return to the editor and hover over the enemy data level. Press the O key on that (alt-tab if necessary again) to pull it up. Now right-click and hit "paste." When asked to replace the file already there, click "yes."
Mission Accomplished!

Now load the game back up and play the level with the desired enemy data. You'll find that you're playing as the character from the original level against a faction he/she normally can't fight!
Glitches & Character Compatibility
  • Executing a Police, Colombian or Guard enemy as Tony will crash the game.

  • Executing an enemy knocked against a wall as Beard/The Soldier will crash the game.

  • The Pig Butcher and The Son can knock down Gang Dodgers by punching them.

  • Most executions will bug out and create the default killed sprite (the black guy in basketball shorts). There aren't too many ways around this problem, short of reskinning it to a sprite of the intended faction.

  • Some characters do have working executions with certain factions. Corey and Mark can execute Police enemies with the Bat, Knife, Chain, Club, and Pipe without issues; and they can execute Colombian enemies with the Pipe and Knife without problems. Manny Pardo/The Cop can also execute Mafia enemies normally using the Pipe, Chain, Bat, and Knife. Evan Wright/The Writer can knock out or kill Colombian Dodgers (not regular enemies) without issues.

  • Any attempt to pick up an unusable gun (like the M16 for the Pig Butcher) will erase that gun from your current playthrough. You can still spawn enemies with those guns, but you can't use them yourself. To get around this, stick to weapons that your character can use normally, and save the unusable weapons for special occasions.

  • You are limited to the weapon spawns your enemy data character had. This means that you won't be able to place down a hammer for the Pig Butcher in the example map. Just remember what your character could and couldn't use originally so you don't end up giving him a useless weapon.

  • Fat enemies tend to be vulnerable to melee attacks if you are fighting a normally-unavailable faction. This mean that Mafia/Colombian Fats will die with one swing of a baseball bat while playing as the Pig Butcher. The next guide will cover this issue in greater detail.
Characters vs Fat Enemies Compatibility
Thank you to Maxim_S for sharing the information used in this section!

Some characters work well with fat enemies despite their factions not being available by default. This section will list whether each character is compatible with each type of fat enemy - this means whether the player's unarmed attacks or melee attacks will kill them or knock them down. A compatible fat enemy will ignore those attacks as intended.

❕ means the character can fight that fat enemy despite that enemy faction not being available by default.

I never knew about that! Thanks for letting me know. I'll add it to the guide.

Small bug I just came across, and I'm surprised it hasn't been picked up on yet; if Ash tries to pick up a gun that he cannot use, he's no longer able to pick any gun up for the rest of the level. Game still runs fine, you just have a pet dog for the rest of the level following you

Any enemy he executes on the ground turns into the Mafia. He can also use the 9mm, but it turns into a Silencer with 14 bullets after the first shot.

Eh, it's fine. The Level Editor is really complex to work with once you get into glitches and exploits like this.

Thanks, I feel stupid.
