This is a sound puzzle, and the steps are random. No pattern to follow, you have to rely on your ears. If you have impaired hearing you may find these hints especially helpful.

Here is the best practice:

1. Use a stereo headset or speakers, but the headset is better for this puzzle.
2. It might be helpful to set panorama speed to slow under Game Options.
3. Make sure to give the lemur red berries.
4. You can hear the lemur cry after one or two steps.
5. In each node (position) turn slowly in any direction and stop when the cursor becomes an arrow. (There are four directions). Don't click yet, just wait for the lemur to cry; then turn again to another direction, stop and listen. Repeat this until you can make out where the sound comes from. It is louder or fainter, and with a stereo sound you hear it from different directions.
6. There will be a position where the sound is the loudest and comes from the front. If for any reason you are unable to identify the source, just locate where you can hear it best. If you are not sure just turn again right or left and listen. Than back - and listen again.
7. Click when you hear the loudest cry. This will take you to the next node, where you start turning and listening again.
8. It might take several steps or more to cross the forest. (You can even make a few errors). No need to worry about getting lost, this forest is not a labyrinth.
9. If you keep clicking in the wrong direction, you arrive at a shrine. To continue your way just turn back to the forest – and the lemur will call you again.
