Star Wars: X-Wing Special Edition - Windows 10 Guide
By StinkyCactus
Got Windows 10? Want to play this game? Well, you can do it! I have Windows 10 and so far it's working pretty good. I'm writing a guide for all the things I figure out as I go along that people may have a hard time with, plus some fun things to just make playing this classic a little easier for you to get started with.

Installing, Running, and Uninstalling
So, this game is amazing and I hope I can help you make it work on your computer. Here is what I've learned with blundering around my computer's harddrive while figuring out how to make this game work on Windows 10. It's still a work in progress, as I haven't figured everything out quite yet, but this is what I know so far and I can play it pretty well atm.

 • Installing

1. Click "Install"
2. Follow all on-screen prompts like "Next" and "I Accept"
3. Congratulations, you still deserve to use a computer.

 • Running the Game

Okay, so you've made it this far. Good on you. Now, before you play the game, let's just get this straight: I haven't figured out how to make the Special Edition option run on my computer yet. That's okay, I hear it's not as good as the Classic option (which I believe is the version I first played back in the 90's, i.e. the 1994 version).

1. Select the game
2. Click "Play"
3. Select "Classic"

BOOM. You're playing the game. That's it, I didn't have to do anything else. I don't hear audio in some places, but I'll make a guide for that once I figure it out. So far, it's only audio in the briefing room, and that is non-essential since there are captions for everything that is spoken.

Edit: I've read that some people are unable to play classic, but are able to play the special edition. If that's the case for you, then I've heard people either deleting the winmm.dll file, or copying and overwriting it the trouble folder's file (classic or remastered) has worked. Personally, I haven't tried that yet. I'll update this if that works for me.

 • Uninstalling/Re-installing

If you uninstall this game, you NEED to check and make sure that Steam actually deleted every single file before you re-install it. I tried re-installing this game and it kept hanging up at 100% in my library. Why? Well, I'm not exactly sure, I'm not a computer wizard. However, I do know that when I went to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\downloading, that all the files I needed to play the blasted game were still in the downloading folder!

If it gets hung up on the download, and it says "Write To Disk Error", do these things and you can re-install it:

1. Go to your games library
2. Right click this game (or any game you may have this issue with)
3. Click "Delete Local Content"
4. Yes, you are sure you want to do this.
5. Watch your game become cold and grayed-out, much like a corpse.
6. Jet over to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\STAR WARS X-Wing
7. DELETE EVERYTHING. Pretend it's Alderaan, and your Delete key is the Death Star.
8. Go here and make sure this place has no trace of your metaphorical Alderaan files: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\downloading. If it's empty, you did this right. (it'll give all your metaphorical Millenium Falcons a rough time in the motherboard, but you don't care. You're Darth Vader right now).
9. Go back to your game library
10. Re-install the game.

If you did all that right, your game shoud re-install without a hiccup and do just fine. Follow the same steps as you did during the first installation just above this section to make it playable. Your game will run in 640x480, it'll sound super 90's, and it'll be great if you played this game right when it originally came out. All the nostalgia will come flooding in, just like the Imperial Fleet over Endor in Return of the Jedi.

(See, it really does work on my computer. It'll most likely work on yours too!)

I am playing this in compatibility mode and everything works except the mouse pointer in the menus. Has anybody found a fix for the mouse pointer?

for those having crashing issues when leaving the hanger, adjust your graphics settings. i'm on windows 10 and the 3d graphics won't work.
there is a work around if you look in the tie fighter discussions

I'm having the same issue shadowolf2004 is having. Menus work, can register, use the tech and film rooms, etc. However, the moment I leave the hangar to enter a mission, the game crashes.

I'm using an xbox 360 controller and when in the ESC menu it lets me see the key map. It says change, but nothing allows me to edit kep map. when I press a button on controller it just moves to the name of the item, but in game does not allow me to fire even after showing weapons armed. Am I missing something?

you just need to use an xbox controller for the special edition

Mrhooha: I'll see what I can do. I had a Joy2Key config at one point for a 360 controller at one point, but I lost the file, I think. I can't get a steam controller to work with it yet, but that'd be sweet if I could since the touch menu would be insanely helpful with the crazy amounts of keyboard commands there are.

I'd like to see a controller setup guide for this game.
