Overview
This Guide aims to clear up some of the conflicting advice I've read about getting the enhanced edition of Tie Fighter Remastered Working on a modern computer.

I'm Running Windows 10 Home (64 bit) with an Nvidia GPU. Other hardware/OS's may have other issues.
Enable 3D acceleration
To allow 3D acceleration to work on NVIDIA hardware do the following.

Download the xwing_ddraw_d3d11_1.4.0.zip from (Newer versions will also work)
https://github.com/rdoeffinger/xwa_ddraw_d3d11/releases/latest/
and extract ddraw.dll and ddraw.cfg to the game directory
..\steamapps\common\STAR WARS Tie Fighter\remastered

This will overwrite the original ddraw.dll

Once in the game engine you press "esc" and select "3D acceleration" from the options menu.

If this doesn't work for you please check out the very informative thread here

Enable In flight music
To get the game running you can just copy winmm.dll from
C:\Windows\SysWOW64
to
steamapps\common\STAR WARS Tie Fighter\remastered\
Overwriting the existing file.

However that does not enable the ingame music. To do this you should download one of these files
http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=34865955925379067754
http://www.speedyshare.com/nZ8ty/Windows-10-Fix.zip

Open the downloaded ZIP file and open the 64bit folder, then extract the contents of the folder to the game directory.
steamapps\common\STAR WARS X-Wing\remastered\

The next time you start the game In flight music should now work.

Update: I can't remember exactly what was in these files. try this thread instead to get the music working.

Enable -softwarecursor in "lauch options"
Without this launch option I found that the mouse was limited to the top left corner of the screen.

From BigPicture mode:
* Manage game --> Lauch Options
Add
-softwarecursor
Click OK
Steam controller
Assuming you
* have NOT enabled "compatibility mode" on TIE95.exe
* have NOT enabled ""run as administrator" on TIE95.exe
* have launched the game from Bigpicture mode
then the steam overlay should be enabled and so the steam controller should "just work".

If you get prompted for a joystick then the steam overlay isn't working correctly, and so the controller is not being made available to the game. Check the above.

My game keeps crashing at random times. There's no correlation. Sometimes it'll run for hours. Other times, when I'm about to complete a mission.

Win 10, has made me hug my Win 8 lappy, so much tighter, while still shedding tears for my WinXP system...

This application worked well until the updated release of the following Steam client application:
Built: Oct 23 2020, at 13:30:57
Steam API: v020
Steam package versions: 1603487799

Can someone assist?

Yes these tips are good. Here are the steps I followed to get the game to a playable state:

I'm confused. By "Remastered" do you mean the "Special Edition" (and not the Collector's CD-ROM version, which was added to Steam just before your guide was posted)?

It seems from my readings here that the Collector's CD-ROM is the player-preferred version, due to the situational inflight (though MIDI) music.

updated, but I can't remember what was in the files, so I pointed at what appears to be a recent thread on the issue instead.

Had a similar issue on Windows Vista not being able to run the 98'/Remastered version, the winmm.dll solution worked
