CV vs SV problem with medium sized ship replicas.

"This picture shows very good the big difference between CV and SV block size.

This is not a problem for replicas of small fighters ( up to 20 m lenght) nor for replicas of big capital ships ( beyond 75 m length).

But for medium sized ships you have to choose between the right / good looking shape (SV) or functionality (CV).

In this example the template is a VT-49 Decimator ship from the star wars universe.

The original described length is 38 m.
The SV block size is 0,5 meter, CV one is 2 meter edge length.

38 m = 76 x SV blocks or 19 CV blocks length.

Well, now try to create good looking shape for this ship with 19 blocks length ;)

1. If you choose to make the ship as SV, you will end up with huge, heavy SV, lacking basic functions, like warp core, gravity generator, medic station, turrets, etc. Everything you normally would need for a bigger ship.

2. If you try to make this one as CV, you will end up with ugly, blocky shape, probably hard to identify. Or you will have to use bigger scale and make you ship X times bigger than the original size.

Whatever you decide to do, you have to make a dirty compromise."

I am currently trying to put together a CV Decimator as it is my #1 favorite sci-fi ship with the Daedalus as a close second. I cant even get the wing angles to work. i currently have a a giant tuning fork with a pile of medium engines to make it go forward lol

I think you nailed what my problem has been and I really didn't understand until I read this. Thinking I had an awesome shape or design in mind and then try to make it come to life I was met with frustration. I have been trying to build medium sized CV's because I'm not wanting to construct anything gargantuan, just utilitarian. This I see has damped my creativity, I love this game still so please devs address this.

They should let us select the block size. A little group of radial buttons should do the trick :
o: 0.5 o: 1.0 o: 1.5 o 2.0
Bigger gives more "hit points" :p
Then everyone can decide what size would be needed.
Maybe in the "block selection" screen would be best.

Here's a thought: Why have block size locked to ship class at all? As long as we're dealing in cubes and the measurements are increments of each other like they are now - most, if not all, of the blocks will fit together anyways.

It wouldnt be so bad if maybe they added a fourth type of vessel, one that can dock with CV's but instead of the .5m blocks give it 1m block, between SV and CV. I think that would allow for a little bit larger vessel with some of the features of CV's med station grav gen, but no warp drive.

Thx for the comments guys. Seems I'm not alone with this problem.
I addressed this problem bei the devs. Maybe they can do something about this in the future.

I've been running into this problem myself more than I'd like while trying to make 1:1 ratio Wing Commander fighters and bombers.

The dimensions on an F-86c Hellcat V for instance is 27m x 18.9m x 7.1m and around 15.4 tons.

That's 54 long, 38 wide (rounding up), and 14 blocks high (rounding down). Maybe, I'm wrong, but I don't think that's happening within the 15.4 ton range with SV blocks.

And the shape with CV blocks? Good luck with that.

I completely agree, this is the choice i have had to make when building my ships as well. like you I try to stay as close to the source material as possible so when chosing between SV and CV it does get a little hard. I think that it is funny that without ever talking to you or just reading this info from here right now for the first time that we basically came up with the same perameters of size for vessels.
