I highly recommend reading the "Game Concepts" section found under the "Quests" tab. Regardless this guide will hopefully give you a quick idea of how recruiting works. Recruiting is pretty simple once you know what to do.

Recruiting Normal Soldiers

When you first begin the game there is only one main way that you recruit soldiers for your army. Whenever you enter a town on the left side are several square icons. The lowest icon, (The one with the paper and quill.) is for messages.

Notice the icon highlighted in red.

When you click on it, you will see different missions, deals, and etc. that you can accept. I highly recommend viewing this tab often as there are a lot of things here you will find of use. Among these messages you will also see some for soldier that you can hire. These soldiers will be of different levels ranging from raw recruits and miltias, to trained soldiers.

My party is currently full, so it will differ somewhat when you can actually hire soldiers.

Click on the message that has the troops you want to hire, your money in the upper right hand corner should udjust for it. If you change you mind before you leave, click on the message again. There won't always be soldiers available for hire, you may have to sail around a bit.

Recruiting Elite Soldiers

The highest level troops in the game are reserved for faction members. To be able to hire those troops you will need to join a faction. When you sail into one of your facitons' cities, click on the garrison, which is by the fort. There you can add soldiers to your complement.

Click on the soldier you want to recruit.

Click on the soldier type you want to hire then drag it to the right to add them to your army. You can then drag them to the left to remove them. (Just like bulk goods.)

This is the unit slider.

If you have just captured a city there may not be any soldiers available for hire, but don't worry more are slowly trained over time.

There is only one way to recruit sailors for your ship. Go to the shipwright, (lower left corner) where you will also buy, sell, and repair ships. From the shipwright page you can recruit sailors for each ship separately. Click on the image of the boat you are currently viewing, a series of thumb nails for each ship you own will appear in the middle of the screen, select the image for the ship you want.

You can then recruit soldiers in the lower right hand corner of your screen, move the slider all the way to the right, and then click hire/replenish. You can also train your sailors here. If you don't see a slider, or if the hire button is grayed out then you have a full crew!
