Getting the game to work!
Step 1. Verify Integrity of game cache. To do this go into your steam library, right click the game, properties, local files, then verify intergrity of game cache.

Step 2. Go into the games files do this by going to your steam library, right clicking the game, properties, local files, browse game files (or something like that)

Step 3. Delete the Jedi file.

Step 4. Copy and paste a shortcut to the JK.exe file from the games directory to whereever you want it, i.e. the desktop probably.

Step 5. Go into the properties of your shortcut, then to compatability. From here set the game to run as an admin. and set it to run in compatability mode of Windows XP (Service Pack 3)

Step 6. Rename your shortcut to "Dark Forces II" without the quotation marks.

Step 7. Profit. Try out the game. If it works and you can play it then bravo you're done! You can change the games resolution up from 640x480 to 1600x900, but using this method for some reason you can't do 1920x1080. I'm not sure of the reason of this, but the game should be plenty playable and in fullscreen using this method.

Optional steps.

Step 8. If you have an nVidia card you might need to download and install the legacy driver which can be found here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx-9.13.0604-legacy-driver.html

Step 9. If the game still won't work then I would recommend trying out Korriban's steam guide which can be found here: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=382626458

Step 10. If after trying all other steps and you still can't get it to work. Then try mixing and matching the steps from this guide and Korriban's. I'm unable to do that and tell you the perfect combination as just doing the steps found in my guide fixed the game for me.

I'd like to thank some members of the discussion board on this game for showing me the steps to fix it. The steps I listed have been put into the discussion board a lot of times by a lot of different people. I'm just the guy that has decided to put these steps into a guide for easy access to people. So don't thank me if I helped. Thank the community of DKII for being awesome!

It keeps saying, "The code execution cannot proceed because smackw32.DLL was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem."

Anyone know a fix for this?

Korriban's guide is gone, and process failed for me.

Clarification on several steps based on my experience.
Step 4 - No JK file in my game directory. JediKnight.exe instead.
The moment I started to run the game after completing Step 6 I received a prompt to install Direct Play. Once that completed, everything worked perfectly!
Thanks!

Worked for me perfect after Step 6 on Win 10. Thank you very much. Wanted to play this vanilla. Step 5 was already set as desired.

Notes: Cannot play (drisplay gets black) when hardware acceleration is activated. I'm playing on highest res possible without h.a. option.

If you have the error 0xc0000022 even after using this guide , it's because direct play isn't installed by default in W10 and the game need it.

- In the Search Windows bar, look for " turn windows features on/off ". Click on It, a window called Windows Features should appear

- In that window, search for the Legacy Compoments folder, Open it, and Check DirectPlay

- Click Ok.

Enjoy :)
