The Guide
Each survivor has an insanity point rating. The higher the rating, the more insanity effects that occur for the survivor. Here's what increases your insanity points

  • Passive. The insanity points for each survivor is always increasing by a small amount
  • Flashlight toggled off. This increases the passive insanity points by a small amount.
  • Clicking on a locked door/wooden board without a crowbar/hammer. +1 Insanity point.
  • Triggering a trap. + 10 Insanity points to the survivor who triggered the trap.
  • Touching the hands insanity effect that come from the ground. + 25 Insanity points.
  • A survivor dying by monster or disconnect that isn't you. + 60 insanity points.

Here's what slows down your insanity points from increasing:

  • Flashlight toggled on. This decreases the passive insanity point increase by a small amount.
  • Being close to a survivor. This decreases the passive insanity point increase by a small amount

If you're next to a survor and have your flashlight toggled on, you won't be gaining or losing any insanity points. It evens out with the passive increase

Below is the amount of insanity points needed for each insanity effect to trigger:

0-199 - No insanity effects occur in this range

200 - The deaf noise starts to randomly trigger.

300 - The black screen gamma effect begins to trigger

400 - The flashlight flickering effect begins to trigger

500 - The hands effect begins to trigger.

600 - The stop movement key begins to trigger. A movement key (WASD and maybe crouch) will randomly stop working for ~5-10 seconds give or take.

700 - The black and white screen effect begins to trigger.

800 - Random "fake" trap sound effects begins to trigger.

900 - The jumpscare face effect begins to trigger.

1000 - Maximum insanity. This does not go higher than 1000. Nothing new is introduced, but it's possible that effects trigger more often after this level has been reached.
Tl;DR: What's the best way to deal with the insanity system?
Easy way:

Hard way: Always stay close to atleast one survivor and always keep your flashlight toggled on. Have nobody die and make sure you never click on locked doors or a wooden board without a crowbar/hammer and never set off a trap

Hey :)

Very nice guide.
I know it was a long time ago, but maybe someone is still reading this.

@600: The stop movement key could also be the run-key. Possibly the sneaking.

@800: If the fake noises starts, it could also be the sound of a monster. The scream of mary or the chasing music of the phantom e.g. Even if you don't play against them.

@1000: In the end it's possible that more than one effect occurs.

I don't know how you get these, but I'll take your numbers for a better overview.
