Introduction
Fractured Space is a spaceship based multiplayer online battle arena, or MOBA. In this sense it is very similar to similar MOBAs, such as League of Legends or Defence of the Ancients (Dota).

This guide will give a brief overview of the game and provide sufficient information to help new players get started.

I will be looking for contributors to help keep the game up to date as the game progresses, as I may not have the time to keep this guide up to date.

Basic Gameplay
Fractured Space is a spaceship combat MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena). In the standard game mode, two teams of five fight over three lanes and two home bases.

Players must first capture the mining stations (small circles) in Alpha and Beta sectors. These will increase your team's resource gain and let you gain ship upgrades. Ship upgrades are straight improvements to your vessel - it will capture bases faster, have more health, fire faster, etc.

Using these upgrades, players can push towards the enemy base. To access the enemy base, a forward base (Alpha 1, Alpha 2, Beta 1, Beta 2) must be captured first. This allows your team to jump straight to the enemy base and begin attacking it.

Once you've gained a level, return to either one of the forward bases or your home base and enter their capture radius to level your ship up. At levels 3, 6, and 9, you will be prompted to obtain an offensive, defensive, or utility based upgrade. The maximum level is 9.

The home base is equipped with several guns and exterior generators that power the guns. Destroying the turret generators protecting the base will make subsequent attacks easier.

Capture the enemy base to win.

Gamma Sector

Gamma, located in the middle, will only become active after a few minutes have elapsed. Notifications (as well as the music, if enabled) will help you identify the amount of time left until Gamma becomes active. The bonus Gamma provides increases as the game continues, and the bonuses are considerable. At maximum level, Gamma provides jump access straight to the enemy base.

The early Gamma bonuses, however, while noticeable, are not as strong as the later-game Gamma bonuses. Some teams will intentionally let their opponents take the early Gamma bonuses to secure a lead on levels by capturing mines.

Once captured, Gamma provides its bonus for several minutes, allowing the team that controls it to make a push on the enemy base.

You lose the Gamma bonus if you die, and don't think you're invincible with the Gamma bonus.
Ships
The core of Fractured Space are the ships that are available to each side. Ships are equivalent to the heroes of a MOBA game, and thus all have different playstyles, strengths, and weaknesses.

While some ships perform better or worse in general in their category, none of the ships are particularly overpowered or carry the team on their own. Finding a vessel that suits your play style is key.

Obtaining Ships

Ships can be obtained either using Credits (in-game currency) or Platinum (premium currency). There is no difference between a ship bought with Credits or a ship bought with Platinum.

While some ships are more expensive than others, they are not necessarily better; as mentioned above, ships are dependent on proper piloting and skill to be effective. The cost appears to be mostly arbitrary.

While more talented players are able to get higher rewards, a mediocre player usually gets around 15,000-20,000 credits per match.

Loadouts
A ship's default loadout is usually more than enough to get players started. Sometimes players will want to specialize depending on the ships they're fighting, but otherwise the defaults are the best overall.

Additional loadout options are "sidegrades" rather than strict improvements. Click on the image below for an example.

Skins
Default Skin
Much Cooler

Bought exclusively with Platinum, Skins make your ship look more impressive. They do not influence any statistics of the ship, however, and thus are strictly cosmetic. Ultimate Skins, however, do provide increased credit earnings when active.

Ship Abilities

All ships have three abilities, triggered with the 1-3 keys on your keyboard. All ships also have a Jump Drive (5), Jump Home (6), a primary weapon (left click) and a secondary weapon/ability (right click).

Ships take up to 6x extra damage when jumping, so time your ship's jumps carefully.
The primary use of Jump Home is to switch lanes. It has a considerably longer wind-up time (during which you take 6x damage) than the normal Jump Drive but it does not share its cooldown with the Jump Drive. Therefore if you're in lane Alpha and want to switch to Beta, use Jump Home to warp home and then use the Jump Drive to switch to the other lane.

All ships also have Point Defence, which is toggled on and off with the 4 key. Point Defence is effective up to 3.25km and can shoot down missiles, fighters, bombers, and drones that near your ship. It can also be used as a weapon to add small amounts of damage to enemies in a pinch, but this is not its primary purpose.

Point Defence lasts for 10 seconds if uninterrupted and drains your ship's energy while it's active. Point Defence cannot be activated if you have insufficient energy. It should be toggled off when not in use. It has an extremely short cooldown, so if 10 seconds is not enough, you can quickly reactivate Point Defence to protect yourself for longer. Be sure to avoid mashing the 4 key, as this will rapidly toggle on and off your point defence and allow missiles to slip through.

Small Craft
Small craft come in three flavours - Fighters, Bombers, and Drones. All small craft are controlled in the same way. Pressing the key assigned to them (usually 3, but some craft have them to 1 or 2 as well) will have them launch and, if no target is selected, circle and protect you.

By locking onto an enemy (T), you can press the button again and send the squadron to attack the targeted enemy. If the squadron hasn't launched yet, they will launch and immediately attack your targeted enemy. Similarly you can also bring your craft to protect an indicated ally by targeting them instead.

Most ships carry only one type of planes, if they carry any at all. There are some exceptions, like the Zarek Paragon, which use small craft much more heavily.

Fighters are fast, manoeuvrable, and designed to protect friendlies from other fighters, bombers, and missiles. They can also be used to target enemy buoys, which rarely have the health or the armour to withstand their attacks. Otherwise, they are mostly used to attack enemies and coax them into using their Point Defence early - usually to let a missile attack through.

Bombers are slower, but still faster than most ships. They cause considerably more damage to other players and buoys, but are generally rarer than fighters. Most bombers fire missiles; charge bombers drop time-delayed bombs that explode in a large area of effect.

Drones come in a large variety of flavours and have special abilities. Siphon Drones, for example, deal small amounts of damage to targets while returning some health to their mothership. Shielding and Healing Drones aid yourself or your teammates, while Healing Suppression Drones and Slow Drones reduce the enemy's effectiveness.

All small craft are vulnerable to Point Defence, which is available to all craft.

If your squadron is taking damage, withdraw them by pressing the R key. The more craft that make it back to you intact, the sooner you can send them out again.

Ship Tips and Tactics
To keep this guide short, this section has its own guide.

Crew
Your crew will provide a few small bonuses to the ship they command. Most crew modifications are extremely small and mostly negligible, but others can provide a noticeable improvement.

All ships require five crewmembers, one of which must be a captain. There are currently nine different officer types, so players must choose which stations to fill. The current officer types are:
  • Captain
  • Carrier Air Group (CAG)
  • Communications
  • Engineer
  • Jump Core
  • Navigation
  • Repair
  • Tactical
  • Utility Officer
It is impossible to equip a ship with fewer than five crewmembers, a crew without a captain, or duplicating roles (there cannot be two engineers or two captains).

Acquiring Crew
Unlike ships, acquiring crew is not as easy as simply buying them. It can be, but it becomes prohibitively expensive early on.

Crewmember templates can be acquired from the drop system, or by purchasing Crew Pods from the store. Unlike other items in the premium store, crew pods can be bought using credits or platinum.

Once you have a supply ship, you must use it from My Inventory.

Note that this procedure does not give you crewmembers. It gives you templates.

To obtain the actual crew, you must spend DNA. DNA, located at the top left of the main menu, can be obtained by converting your credits.

If you have a template, the crewmember only costs around 3000 DNA. Otherwise, it will cost you about 18,000 DNA.

Crew Template
No Crew Template

If you have a crew template, you'll be able to find them in the Collection tab on the right-hand side of the Crew screen under All Roles. Crewmembers you do not have a template for can be found under the Completionist tab.

If you buy a Supply Ship and get a duplicate template, it is automatically converted into DNA for you so you can acquire another crewmember.

Crew can also come in different qualities. However, their stats remain the same; in the future, a higher rarity crewmember can have extra voice lines or animations.

For further details on the stats and what they mean, refer to this guide below.

The game does not support in-game voice chat with other players. Using Skype, Discord, or another VOIP program is recommended when partying with other players.

In general, be a team player. Look at the minimap and determine for yourself whether you are needed in Alpha, Bravo, Gamma, or your home base. Use the minimap, look at where your friends are, etc.
