Welcome
Hello everyone viewing this guide, and welcome to the Terminology Guide for Dark Souls III. This guide will help explain every single term used in the community of Dark Souls III. It will not, however, include insults/taunts. (Git gud casul, scrub, edgelord, etc.)

If I miss any, be sure to comment below. I'll add them when I can.
Terms (PvP)
  • Honor Duel: The act of two players engaging in a fair, one-on-one duel, usually initied by a gesture and weapon buff.
  • Meta: If something is considered 'meta', it is generally the best in its class, and usually the most viable option.
  • Weapon Buff: The act of using a Resin, Miracle, Pyromancy, or Spell on your weapon to increase its capabilities.
  • Buff: When an item or weapon is given increased stats or capabilities in a game update or patch.
  • Nerf: When an item or weapon is given decreased stats or capabilities in a game update or patch.
  • Chugger: Someone who runs and chugs estus often, even if at 75/50% health.
  • Gank: When 2+ players team up against a lone player. (i.e. 2 phantoms and 1 host vs. 1 dark spirit.)

  • Parry-Riposte: The act of parrying an attack and counter-attacking the parry with a follow up R1.
  • Partial Parry: The act of parryring an attack slightly later than required, causing the attacker to get a full hit onto the opponent, but not causing them to stagger.
  • Pancake/Pancaking: Smashing someone/being smahed with an Ultra Greatsword or Greathammer which causes your character to lay flat on the ground.
  • Recovery: The act of getting up from the ground, whether it be by rolling, preforming an action like sipping estus, or letting the animation play out.
  • Wake-Up: The act of attacking someone who is mid-recovery.
  • Guard-Break: Kicking someone who is blocking, causing them to stagger and leaving them open for a riposte. Can also be performed if a player'w stamina is completely depleted while blocking.
  • Hornet Riposte/backstab: A Riposte or Backstab with the Hornet Ring equipped. These are distinguishable by the change in animation (Usually a longer animation.) and the large increase in damage.
  • Dead-Angling: Unlocking your camera and turning to the side as you attack to prevent being parried. Most noticable with Ultra Greatswords.
  • Glass Cannon: Someone who deals massive amounts of damage but can easily be killed in 1-2 hits.
  • Black Sep/Black Crystal(ling): To use the Black Seperation Crystal to kick out phantoms or to leave an invaded world. Does not allow user to expunge invaders.
  • Unlocked: The act of not locking onto others in a fight. Allows for more mobility at the risk of less sight on the opponent.
  • Stable Running Attack: The act of preforming a running attack without needing to run. To do this, two-hand your weapon and begin sprintng whilst blocking. Stop running, but keep blocking, and your next R1 will be a running R1 regardless of movement.

  • Bait: The act of tricking your opponent into preforming an action that leaves them vulnerable.
  • I-Frames/Invincibility Frames: The amount of time you are invincible during a roll.

  • Bodied: One shotted, or instantly killed.
  • Shockwave: Initiated when a Great weapon is smashed into the ground in front of you. Will cause a small stagger.
Terms (PvE)
  • Ads (Pronounced "Adds"): Smaller grunts/minions that bosses spawn in during boss battles.
  • Crits: Short for "Critical Hits", preformed when a boss gets staggered and the hitsound becomes a deeper, low-pitched noise akin to the parry notifier.

You are missing 1 more term called "Lag Stab/ Lag Stabbing" It happens when you get behind someone to back stab them, but they roll to dodge only to get teleported back to the player to get back stabbed.
