When you unlock the ability to morph into a sandworm all you have to do is dive down really fast. Thats it.

only if u have been there with map before, otherwise no way to see caves (lifgt like lava may work tho)

It isn't perfect, but it works well once you get the hang of it. It did work better a few moths ago before more stuff was added however. But you actually have to go out of being a monster when you hit a cave.
