Step -1: Overview
So, just to say, this is a guide for people who want to make new starbound characters, and focus on farming. Personally, my favorite part of starbound is going to new worlds, finding as many new crops as I can get, planting them, and seeing what awesome dishes I can create, which give you insane buffs, like thorns, fire thorns, bonus health, health regen, bonus damage, etc. Which will help me defeat bosses, much much easier.

(Also so I dont have to eat as often, cause I mean, who likes that POO.)

Just to say, this
REALLY
WORKS, here is a screenshot of my character, and all the crops I have collected, without even leaving the comfort of my first solar system.
Also, offscreen, I have Coralcreep, Reefpods, Automatos, Diodia, Currentcorns, and boltbubs!

(Including an infinite and cheap source of milk, and fish)
Step 0: Making your life easier.
In regular starbound, farming is an utter FEMALE DOG, so to make your life MUCH MUCH easier, here are some of the most needed mods for farming:

(This is the most important mod, and what most of this guide relies on)
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=731358672

(Second most important)
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=731044896

(Third most important)
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=730363398

(Fourth most important)
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=730378641

(Optional)
https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=731987890

Once these mods have been downloaded, proceed to step 1.
Step 1: Crafting the gem of your life.
So, to start off, you need to get your self settled, and once you have gone mining a bit, use your Inventor's Table to create bad boy:
To craft, all you need is 4 Timber, 10 Glass, and 6 Iron Bars.

For now, there is nothing we can do with this, but it is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ CRUCIAL that you have it.

Before proceeding to step 2, make sure you beat Erchius Mining Facility, because you will need to travel around your solar system.

Step 2: Getting these sweet, juicy, crops.
So, assuming you have beaten the Erchius Mining Facility, I can also assume that you have unlocked Frogg Furnishing, which means you can buy a colony deed. (Hold on to it, it will be important later)

I can also assume that you are now able to travel between planets in your solar system, which means GO TO THE PLANETS.

Your goal right now is to find any sort of racial village/ dungeon. As long as you can gather racial furniture from any of the 7 6 main races, you should be good.

(Screw you Cultivator. people made of literal light and gas are as ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ important as ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fish people. Racist. #Novakidlivesmatter)

I was quite lucky and found an Avian village on a desert planet, AND OH BABY JESUS, did I find LOADS of new crops.

So yea, you get the point.
(ALSO BEFORE MOVING ONTO STEP 3, STEAL AS MUCH FURNITURE AS YOU CAN (WITHOUT GETTING KILLED BY GUARDS))
Step 4: PLANTING THOSE SWEET JUICY CROPS. (And getting merchants)
So, now you have gotten crops (And furniture), it is time to begin farming! All you need to turn those crops you (Hopefully) got into seeds is the crop itself, some plant fiber, and the seed maker we made earlier.

Just open up the seed maker, select the seed, and blam.

So assuming you got the seeds.... Thats it. you should know how to farm them now, so half of this guide is complete!

Now, for the other half of the guide:

Getting racial merchants!

YES. MERCHANTS. NOT CHEFS.

Chefs sell you the cooked and finished products of crops, while merchants sell you the crops itself, which is what we want.

It is usually good to have racial merchants, (especially ones like glitch and hyotl) is because they sell you crops that are specific to them, like coralcreep, reefpods, diodias, etc.

all you need to get one to spawn is:
- a room with a door and a light
- racial furniture
- crates and tables
- and a colony deed

Example:

Protip: If you are ever low on plant fibre, you can also make a plant fibre tree seed:
Step 3?..... : Best combinations for profit. (WIP)
This is a WIP, but I just want to let you all know the best food items to get money from, so you can mass produce them, for this update Ill focus on food items that only cost 2 crops.

Nuts'n'bolts: 113 per unit at Terramart shipments and 75 at any ol' merchant. All it costs is 1 Diodia and 1 Boltbub. In my personal opinion, easiest one.

Neonmelon Jam: 140 per unit at Terramart shipments and 93 at any merchant. costs 1 sugar and 1 neonmelon. Takes a little longer, but worth the wait.

Anything with Chili peppers, examples:

Spicy Feathercrown. 125 at terramart shipment and 83 at any merchant. costs 1 Chili and 1 Feathercrown. Pretty good and easy, in my opinion.

Burning Eyeballs. 155 per unit at Terramart shipments and 103 at any merchant. costs 1 Chili and 1 Oculemon. The highest one I can find for only 2 crops, WAY Worth the wait.
Step 5: Conclusion.
Well, that just about raps up everything I wanted to say.

If I missed something, if you have a questions, or want to make suggestions: feel free to leave them in the comments below!

Thanks for reading.

You also forgot to mention CN More Farming mod, which adds in tons more crops and food items you can craft and probably sell.
But overall nice guide.
Might start over and just do a large farm, only go to planets for crops.

Don't know if anyone already said this, but you can make a ton of money from cocoa pods being turned into chocolate. You can craft it all in one go because cocoa pods stack and you don't need to farm more than one type of crop.

in a space station with less gravity, water from sprinklers travels farther. you only need one sprinkler for a big room if your gravity is low enough.
