Workshop Presentation Guide
By Whiplash
On this guide I will give tips on how to present your mods/missions on the steam workshop , to get more subscribers and to make your work look more professional like instead of looking like you just published something randomly with no work whatsoever . My whish is to help you get more players to play your missions and to download your mods even more and , hopefuly , to improve the Arma community even more specialy here on the Workshop where it seems (to me) very disorganized .

Note that this guide is based on the experience that i've acquired on the steam workshop by publishing several missions and mods and by making analysis on those very publishes.

Hope it helps !

First - The main image
So , you have finished your awesome mission/mod and you want to share it with the community . You want to make sure that people will subscribe and download whatever you are sharing to the workshop .For that you will want to make your work look "professional" , you will need to show your future subscribers and even followers that you have put some work on your mission , so to start, you will begin with the mod/mission Image.

Most of the times , this is what you see all over the workshop , missions/mods that contain the default published image .Pretty sure no one will choose to download those missions or even open them to see what they have , that is exactly what we are trying to avoid here , you want to catch people's attention and to make them instantly interested with what they see on that image (and title).

Making a mission/mod image may not be entirely easy and it may require some editing skills but once you get used to what ever software you are using to edit images you will start make some awesome images for sure. I recomend you to take a look at the most subscribed missions .

Before you start making the image there is something you should consider first ... the image size .

On the example above it shows one of my mods (first one on the top left ) and a couple of missions made by other authors , do you notice the difference between their images and mine (and Somchai) ? You can see that their images are streched out ,so you might want to consider the size of the image first.

I use GIMP 2 but you can use other softwares obviously

800x800 is the Ideal size for the project image
768x192 also gives you a good main image

Second - Screenshots
This is another important step , on the first step you called people's attention , now , you need to make sure that they will subscribe , having good screenshots that show what your content gives can be crucial so you need to make sure that your screenshots give the player an idea of what they are subscribing. Also , don't upload tons of images (unless necessary of course) , take a lot of screenshots and choose the better ones, 4 to 6 images should be enough.

Before taking any screenshots you should already know about the Splendid Camera that you can find by pressing ESC in-game .

Video Tutorial :

Get familiar with this camera , try it's functions and if you want to , download mods that change the game light to give it a more realistic detail to your screenshot (look for Real Light V5 for example)

Knowing about this camera is good but taking screenshots of soldiers standing still or in default stances gets boring , so , I reccommend you to also get familiar with the Animations that you can also find when pressing ESC in-game.

Here is a good video explaining how to use those animations in-game :

So now that you know all that's behind let's take a picture .
Place a soldier on the Editor , change the gear the way you want it , execute the animation , go to the camera , make all the adjustments you want and take the shot! Use Steam screenshots keybind or use something else that you find suitable . If you want to complicate things even more edit the screenshot add some filters , change contrast , blur the background or whatever you think makes your image better.

If you also have video editting skills that can also be very handy , make a trailer for your mod or give a little taste of what your mission is about or simply tease about what's in the mod.

Third - Description
As you would expect , the description is also important , you should consider to only type here the most important things , people don't want to read a gigantic text ( unless it's really required , for example some mods require additional informations , class names , instructions and so on ) but they also need information about what they are subscribing , basically , Keep It Short and Simple , give an idea of what the mission/mod is about , what mods are required* ( if any ) and if you wish , create a couple of hyperlinks to your pages such as twitter , twitch , youtube or others.

*You should always take in consideration the required mods (or dependencies) that you are using on your mod/mission , if you want to get the most subscribers possible , using mods that are not "famous" or that simply are not available on the Steam Workshop will make the subscriber think twice times before even pressing that button , so try using the most downloaded mods or simply don't use any mods.

Here is an example of my Description Template for my work:

As you can see , I added a couple of PNG images to make my description look "prettier" . I took inspiration from descriptions that you commonly see on the Counter Strike : Global Offensive Workshop . I suggest you go there and check out the descriptions of the guns many authors make , you will see very skilled people there and definitely get inspired by them.

Put your hyperlinks here ( not links ) , as you see on the image above , I placed youtube/Twitter/Twitch Icons of which you can quickly get to my pages by pressing them , to make these type of things check the Steam BB Codes.

There is also a Download Button , where you can (if available) a link to download the mission files .
In the end , the description is up to your creativity skills .
Conclusion
Creativity is key here , but understanding what people are looking for on the workshop is also important . I hope these tips help you get more subscribers , if it did please let me know ! I would realy like to know . If you think i missed something let me know as well.

How do you put in a line break.
Enter key got me here.
If I hit the enter key in the mission description, steam wants to publish.

And how to get a blank line to separate a paragraph. That short list of instructions is too short...

Unless things have changed, those Steam BB Codes only apply to forums. Instead the only codes that will work for Workshop/Community text formatting, AFAIK, are in this short list: Steam formatting codes .

Loving the guide, it will certainly help the lower class/inexperienced creators. However, please make sure double-check spelling (this will help with the credability of this guide, I am not having a go at you, by the way).
