Quick overview / handguide.
This section is ment as a really really quick over view of helpful tips and methods to help guide you throughout your medieval life.

These are the default controls, you can of course freely rekeybind in the options under bindings.
Basic controls:
i - inventory
g - refered to as the "g menu" and is where you will find most the large block items. Drag these onto your hot bar to use/build.
k - quests
h - house(faction) menu
F3 - player list
shift - use shift while building to activate compound building.
z - toggles compound building on/off.

Useful control hints:
mmb(middle mouse button) - Tertiary action. Ex: equip a pickaxe and use mmb to super mine!!!

Compound building is the ability to build multiple building blocks in the same area/spot.

Landshaping can be a major part of the game. Using a shovel to dig softer resources such as dirt and clay and a pickaxe to mine rock and ore. You can place dirt with a shovel. You can also place down landstakes to help level out the placement of dirt to help create flat areas. You can negate the landstake effects by holding shift while placing the dirt, you wil find this VERY useful to help

The game also offers structural integrity, meaning if something is built wrong wrong or damage wrongly then it can collapse and break.

If you wish a more a more in depth version read the sections after this.
Overview of Basic Food & Tools
Gatherable Foods:
These can all be found scattered all over the ground in different terrains of the world.
Berry Bush
Mushrooms
Herbs
Pumkin
Berries - Small Red Dots
Mushrooms
Herbs
Pumkin
Cabbage
Roots
Deer
Cabbage
Roots
Deer
  • Berries, Mushrooms, and Roots can all be found in wooded/forest locations mainly.
  • Cabbage, Wheat(shown later), Herbs, and Pumpkins are all found generally in open fields.
  • The Berries will be on small light green bushes, the ones with berries will have small red balls on them.
  • Many of these plants offer sticks as well if you pick up the plant again after the first resource(the food) is gathered.

Suggestion: Unlock Gourmet Cooking to unlock bread and unlock Farming to get the Mill Stone and this will allow you to start making bread to live off of.

Tools and Their uses:
Here is a list of the tools you will see and probably need while playing:
Stone Axe
Iron Axe
Wooden Mallet
Iron Hammer
Wooden Shovel
Iron Shovel
Pick Axe
Hand Plow
Stone/Crude Axe
Iron Axe
Wooden Mallet
Iron Hammer
Wooden Shovel
Iron Shovel
Pick Axe
Hand Plow
  • Each Tool is generally restricted purely for its intented use. For exmaple an axe will NOT count as a weapon or mining tool.

Note: Each wooden tool has the updated iron version next to it within the table above.

The Wooden Mallet & Hammer is the tool used for constructing and deconstructing items. Left click to construct and Right click to deconstruct.

The Wooden Shovel & Shovel, all uses of this tool is over under the Terraforming section.

The Hand Plow is used to till the land into farmland to prepare for plant crops for farming.

Manipulation Tool:

Manipulation tool
Manipulation tool

The Manipulation Tool is the same as the Hand on your toolbar. Both are permanently set to Zero(0) on your toolbar and must be pressed or if your holding nothing then you can use the manipulation tool.

The Manipulation Tool's left click is the pick up option. This table displays the two events that can happen when you pickup a item with the manipulation tool.
Red
Transparent
Red - Can't drop
Faded - Carrying and may be able to drop
When the item is highlighted in red this means you can't drop it at its current location. In most cases its too close to another item or the ground.

This table displays the right click option on the Manipulation Tool and the effects that may possible occur at different lengths.
Green
Yellow
Red
Green - Easy to pull
Yellow - Medium to pull
Red - Hard to pull and about to break
Once past red the rope will break resulting it losing the grip on the item. This can be used for many purposes, possibly dragging carts...etc.
Survival
While in Survival Mode, your resources need to be gathered, you can not fly and you can die from injuries or starvation.

Helpful Reminders:
  • Health - regenerates on its own but really slowly, you want to eat or use bandages to heal faster.
  • Stamina - will regenerate on its own, you just need to rest and it will go back up quickly.
  • Hunger - needs to be replenished often or once you run out you will start taking damage.

Suggestion: If your new, review "Helpful Control Keys" later in the guide for basic control overview.

Getting Started:
Now the first thing you probably want to get into doing right away is building, right? but...You don't have a hammer.

So to get started you want to first make a Stone Axe so you can start gathering logs. So in order to make the Stone Axe you will need to gather some Small Stones and Wooden Stick.

Small Stones
Wooden Sticks
Wooden Sticks
Small Stones
Small Pine - Wooden Sticks
Small Tree - Wooden Sticks
  • The Small Stones can be found randomly on the ground, more often by rocky areas.
  • The Wooden Sticks are found from two different types of small trees or crafted from logs.

Note: You can craft by either double clicking on items or clicking the craft button.

Once you've gather some Sticks and Small Stones, you can now start crafting basic items. You will do so by opening your inventory by pressing " i ". Your inventory also provides basic crafting on the left side. Once you click on a item it will display what resources are required to craft an item after you click on it.

Inside your inventory crafting menu you will also see that you can create a Wooden Mallet. This will be the basic tool you will need to actually start building if you wish. More on this topic covered in the Engineering/Building section.

Suggestion: Start by marking the Stone Axe as mentioned and then gather wood.
Note: You can't mine or attack with your Stone Axe, but a Club can be used for basic defense.

Large Stone:
Before you even consider getting iron you may run into the problem of possibly needing large stone.

There are a couple ways to obtain Large Store before your able to mine rock with an Iron Pickaxe.

The first and most easiest way of obtaining Large Stone is by simply picking it up!
Just look either up in the mountains or in rocky areas for Large Stone.
It will look similar to this:
Large Stone on Grass

There is also the other option of digging in Rock Grass.

These both are alright start solutions to getting Large Stone, but ideally you will want to get a Iron Pickaxe and mine.

But if you want an Iron Pickaxe then you need...iron. So how would I get iron? You may be asking.
Its actually pretty easy to get your first iron and all you need is a Wooden Shovel.

Iron:
Now that you have accomplish getting some of your basic tools by now(Stone Axe,Wooden Shovel), it now time to look into how to get better tools.

To find Iron you will want to look for orange spots on the ground, similar to this:
Iron Spot
  • This is what Iron looks like from the surface, alteast on grass, it will have similar effects else where.

Now that you found Iron you will want to dig down and you will find the iron.
This is what the different range of Iron from Poor to Rich Yield:
Poor Yield
Regular Yield
Poor Yield
Regular Yield
Rich Yield
Rich Yield
  • Poor Yield is only Found when digging in orange spots in grass areas(In forests or open fields).
  • The higher the yield the more Iron ore you will recieve, making a Rich Yield only Iron.

You will be using Iron in the research table(explained next!) to unlock research for new blocks and tools.

Suggestion: Researching Iron Works and Metal Hardening right away if you want access to make Iron Tools. (Research will be covered in the next section.)

Now that you can aquire all the basic resources its time to learn Advance Crafting.

Advance Crafting:
Crafting Table
  • A lot of items will be crafted within the crafting table.
  • Requires two logs to make.

Note: You need to place the items from your inventory into the crafting table.

Within the crafting table you will now have access to build the Research Table and in the future you will see other work stations and blocks being able to be built within the crafting table.
Advance Survival Techniques
Now that you know the basics its time to use those skills and put them to good use. First would be to research schematics to improve your engineer's knowledge of the world. This is obtained through the Research Table.
Research Table
This is used to learn schematics that are broken up into multiple different categories.
Special Thanks to Ivan for this picture.

Note: Some unlocked items may require other work stations to craft them.
For example the Hand Plow is unlocked by learning basic farming but is created using the Smithy.

Also don't forget some of these schematics also unlocks new work stations that are all able to be built through the crafting table.

Unlocking these schematics also unlocks new blocks that can be accessed by pressing "G". This will open the Toolbar Config menu. This menu shows all known blocks, so if you don't see a block you need to learn the schematic. Also this menu offers other options such as Character Tools and Character Animations (More options while in creative).

Now that you have a better understand of how the different jobs(schematics) work, its now time to explain a bit more in detail each briefly. Some topics will be covered more than others.

Carpentry & Mechanics:
Carpentry is simple you just gather wood to build most these items that require timber.
While Mechanics may require timber, rope and iron.

Stone & Iron Works:
You just simply mine for these required resources.
Finding Iron and its different yield types was explained earlier on within this guide.

Farming & Cooking:
Farming is important if you don't want to be starving most of the time while you play. All the curent crops are:
Pumkin
Cabbage
Wheat
Flax
Herb
Pumkin
Cabbage
Wheat
Flax
Herb

There are also four tools you will use to help you farm and they are:
Hand Plow
Pumpkin Seeds
Cabbage Seeds
Flax Seeds
Wheat Seeds
Herbal Seeds
Hand Plow
Pumpkin Seeds
Cabbage Seeds
Flax Seeds
Wheat Seeds
Herbal Seeds
The Hand Plow is used to till the land into farmland to prepare for crops for farming. You will till grass to turn it into farmland.

Warning: There is no way in survival to convert tilled land back into grass. Also farming is based off the sun and the season time. In which both these are settings per world.

The Seed Bags are used to plant the crops within the tilled land. Just simply click to place them onto the tilled soil.

Here is what the steps of farming looks like:
Tilled Farmland:
Tilled Field
Crops grown halfway:
Mid Growth Crop
Fully grown crops:
Fully Grown Crop
Now its time to pick and repeat. Nice job! Now you are a master farmer! Now its time to cook with these items.

Cooking your items into meals is always a better choice then eating raw foods. I suggest you gather other food items that are non farmable to help cook better meals. The best meals are made from Gourmet Cooking and give you the best nourishment.

Now that you understand the basics of surviving and crafting its now time to get into the actual engineering/building of the game.
Engineering/Building - Cart + Catapult
Engineering/Building is the biggest part of the game!
First a basic understanding will be covered on how complex building/blocks work.

Useful Controls:
*G - Block Menu
*Ctrl+Scroll-Wheel - Moves objects further and closer to your self. Especially used when placing.

Advanced Building:
The first thing most ask about is what is the + symbol in the top right of some blocks?
Similar to how this timber has it:
Timber
These blocks are know as "MultiBlocks" because they actually are multiple blocks in one. All you need to do is scroll wheel on your mouse to switch between all the different blocks. Some blocks such as the timber above simply change the size. Other blocks changes the type of block it is.

Dynamic Building :
This can be activated by pressing "J". This toggles on and off Dynamic building which when turned on you are allowed to build loose objects not attached to the voxel(ground). This for example can be used to build objects such as carts for example.

Compound Building :
This can be activated by pressing "Z" to toggle Compound Building on/off. This allowed the ability to build more then one object in the same grid. For example building a corner wall.
Faded Wall - Compound Building
You can see the faded other wall connected to the other in this picture.

Warning: This may not work with all blocks but should work for most.

Now that there is a better understanding of the more complex building methods, its now time to finally build your very own cart! :D. You can apply all these to engineer your own creations! Hopefully some to even share on the workshop with others!

Basic Cart:
To build your first basic cart you will need a decent bit of timber at hand or...be in creative xD. Then along with the timber you will also need a couple normal catchblocks and wheels.

Catchblock
Wheel
Catchblock
Wheel

Now we will combined them all together to form a cart.
The easiest way to get started is to create a support to build off of.
Timber Support Leg

Then you build the frame of the cart, think of it similar to a very basic frame to a car with wheels. Our versions will be made of timber and catchblocks with wheels attached.
CartWheels
Warning: Be sure to add the wheels on the correct way. You can test if they are by trying to turn them to see if they spin.

Next step is to customize to your liking or personal use for the cart now! :D
I will show you what I did with my cart now. I added chests and a small little hook out of timber so I can control the cart better when I pull it.
Finished Cart

After you finished building your cart you just simply destroy the support leg and you can now enjoy your cart! :D

Now its time to use all these new skils and create a weapon of destruction! :D

Catapult:
To build your first basic catapult you will again need a decent bit of timber and a couple catchblocks and a hand full of other items. All listed below.

Catapult Bucket
Rope Torsion Spring
Rope End
Hand Crank Wheel
Rope Drum
Catapult Bucket
Rope Torsion Spring
Rope End
Hand Crank Wheel
Rope Drum
  • Catapult Bucket - use to hold and fling Large/Small Projectiles. Just simply place them inside the bucket or press "F" to auto load if you have ammo in your inventory.
  • Rope Torsion Spring - A spring action mechanic. For example once moved from the original position it flings back to the starting position. It only springs forward and back.
  • Rope End - Use as a rope connection. Simply use the rope tool to connect this to another rope connection.
  • Hand Crank Wheel - Used by pressing "F" or "Shift+F" to reverse action. This is used to turn objects its connected to on a catchblock.
  • Rope Drum - Use as a rope connection. One version is a normal Drum and the other comes with a locking feature. The Primary use for this is to connect to a catchblock and a Crank to be able to pull or release rope from the Drum.

I will show you a very basic catapult build with all these components. My example versions will be stationary so if you want a mobile catapult or any other creation mobile you can just make just simply apply the methods used in creating the frame and wheels of the cart.

First I built the very basic frame with the spring located in a good position for it to be effective.
Catapult Step One

Then I added the Bucket, along with setting up the Drum and Crank.
Catapult Step Two

Then I connect the rope between the Drum and arm of the Bucket and lower the arm into a firing position. This pulls back the Rope Torsion Spring and letting me be able to load the catapult now.(In which I do load the catapult.)
Catapult Step Three

Now that we finish building and loading the catapult and now we must test it! :D. Probably the most important and fun part! :D.
Catapult Step Fun

Congratulations! You now can create, load and fire a catapult! :D

Now its time to find out how to build and destroy better than your enemy with understanding structural integrity.
Structural Integrity
Structural Integrity is another large part of the game, also one of the more complex. It takes into account height, weight, and physics of course...especially if you mess up.

Structural Integrity - is how well an item holds togethers under its own weight. On top of this it is also taken into consideration when under attack. For example, if a large portion of your castle falls onto another, can it hold all that weight? or will it collapse in and crumble like the rest?

Now most ask and wonder, Okay so how do I see or determine the Structural Integrity of my build? Well its simple especially if your in creative. In Creative mode you can actually see the Structural Integrity of items by pressing "N". This is a really amazing feature to know and use to help design builds around Structural Integrity and how to counter it.
Structural Integrity
The higher the build and the heavier the weight the more structurally unsafe a building becomes. This also means when these buildings are attacked they are more likely to fall.

Warning: The feature to display Structural Integrity is DISABLED in survival mode! So I recommend at least doing some test builds in creative to get a better understand/feeling for how Structural Integrity works.

Suggestion: Don't build above eight blocks tall and try to implement the surround land into the foundation of your build.

There are ways to help improve your builds and your structural integrity and that is to terraform the land.
Terraforming - Shovel & Techniques.
Upon update 0.5 there was the introduction of the new and possibly the most powerful tool to be introduced into the game, the shovel. The shovel is accompanied by the landstakes that allow for the flattening of land.

The Tools:
Wooden Shovel
Iron Shovel
Landscape Stake
Basic Rope
Wooden Shovel
Iron Shovel
Landscape Stake
Basic Rope

The Shovels of course used to terraform the land normally.

The Landscape Stakes are used as flattening / leveling tools.

Landscape Stake:
This is to demonstrate how Landscape Stakes work.

First start with finding a location. In my case I wanted a ramp up this rock.

Then place down the Landscape Stakes and Rope them together with Basic Rope.

Then to confirm its all roped together you should see a white area in between if you did it right.

Complete! :D

Test...

Works! :D

The Landscape Stakes can be used to terraform the land and mold it to your will. To allow the creation of nice flat farm, better housing plots, even make your own roads(No they don't count as actually roads but you can make them look exactly like a road in the world.) and so much more that the possibilities are only as limited as your imagination.

Technique:
If you are using the Landscape Stakes they can be a little tricky at times, especially if you got deep / higher slopes.

The best method to handle higher slopes is to first use the shovel normally then fully connect the Landscape Stakes together once you are closer to the actual flatten height. Then you flatten things out.

You may run into some dirt messing up while flattening, so simply just untie one rope end from a Landscape Stake, fix the dirt and then put it back or attempt to fix the dirt without the Landscape Stakes.
Claim Blocks & Banner Workstations
These items help define yourself within the world of Medieval Engineers. Allowing you to claim your own land and create a customizable banner to represent your self. Both of these blocks are always located and available right away through the "G" menu.

Claim Block
Banner Workstation
Claim Block Icon
Banner Workstation Icon

Claim Blocks:
Claim Blocks - only requires a few common resources to build but require resources to be paid in "Taxes". Taxes can be considered the say as paying upkeep or rent and this is the more costly side of having a claimblock. You need to pay resources to your claim to keep your "claimed" land protected and yours.

The Claim Block looks like(but with your banner):
Claim Block

The Border of your claim will look like:
Claim Border
  • The border will display any time you attempt to build within an area.
  • Depending on who owns the claim will depend on the color of the borders. Green being your own, Blue being your house and Red/Orange being random or enemy. Then there is White that represents unclaimed land.

Then the Claim Block Menu(When pressing "F" to interact with it):
Claim Main Menu
This menu should be pretty straigh forward, once you hover your mouse over each it explains what they are and they each open up into another menu.

Now the part of the Claim Block Menu I think may confuse some people is under the Respawn Options of Share Options. These options are the permissions on who has access to what within your claim. The Menu when expanded for the keygroup permissions will be displayed as:
Keygroup Permissions
Starting with the top row and going from left to right. There is the Iron, Silver and Gold Key Set. If you enable these(It should turn a darker tint) then it allows anyone you gave the key to access. To give other players a key you need to go up to them and interact on them by pressing "F" and then selecting a key within the menu and then they will have access to anything you give access to this key.
In the bottom left, this icon is the "Share with House" option. This will share the permission you are setting to allow your whole house(faction) to have access now.
The Bottom middle is the option shown above to give permission to your different key groups.
Lastly the bottom Right is the permission to give access to certain players, but they must be online in order for you to give them access.

Banner Workstations:
Banner Workstation - only requires a few common resources and is simply placed on the ground. This block allows for the customization of banners, personal and house banner. These banners are represented on of course the personal and house flags, but also on the map to indicate claimed land.
Banner Workstation
Creative
While in Creative Mode, you can build instantly with unlimited resources, fly around and you can not die.

To get started you can turn on and off the ability to fly by pressing "X".
Pressing "C" to fly down and "Spacebar" to go up. Along with the normal movement keys to fly around.

Another feature only available in creative or admin is the ability to go into spectator. Spectator mode allows you to enter a spectator camera. There are a couple different versions of spectator mode.

All these controls are also listed below for easier reference if needed.

F6 - Get back into controlled character.
F7 - Spectator with fixed view vector to controlled object.
F8 - Free spectator. You can still do actions with controlled object.
F9 - Static spectator. You control character, but camera is static.
Ctrl+Space - Take you to the location of the camera.

**F - while having a voxel tool in your hand allows you to edit the size of the vxoel tool!

There are also the some additional controls that may help you in either creative or if your admin.

Admin/Special controls:
Shift+F10 - Open spawn screen ( Spawns Items )
Alt+F10 - "Medieval Master" Admin menu
F3 - Player List / Player control for Admins

There are also a few other controls that will help when in creative. There will probably come a time when you want to copy and paste items/objects/grids. Well here are the commands:
Ctrl+C - Copy Object
Ctrl+V - Paste Object
Ctrl+X - asks to delete grid your looking at with the cursor. A popup window will appear.
Helpful Control Keys
Most control keys and what they can do can be found by pressing F1 in-game. The F1 menu also allows for customization of each keybind.

Most useful controls:
i - Inventory/Basic crafting
F - Use/Interaction. Pressing F while having a voxel tool active allows you to customize the size!
**mmb(middle mouse button) - Uses tertiary action. Ex: use when a pickaxe is equiped to super mine!!!
*** G - Block Menu ***
V - Switch between First and Third Person
X - Toggles Flying on/off ( Creative/Admin )
N - Structural Integrity View ( Creative ONLY)

Backsapce - Suicide
J - Dynamic building on/off
**Left Alt - Hold for Compound building
*** Ctrl+Scroll-Wheel - Moves objects further and closer to your self. Especially used when placing.
Shift+F11 - Debug Menu - Displays debug info, pressing it agian will display other information but the most helpful is the "sim speed" is what most look for. This indicates how fast the game is running its simulation speed.

Block Rotation:
E,PgDown - Rotate block Vertical +
Q,Delete - Rotate block Vertical -
Y,Home - Rotate block Horizontal +
R,Insert - Rotate block Roll +
Other directions are unassigned by default.

BluePrint Controls:
F10 - Open Blueprint screen

@nickbrad82 , I suggest when trying to place blocks you can use ctrl + scroll wheel to bring blocks further and closer to your character and once they are pushed onto another block they will react. Also there is also compound building that will help make your building life easier. Simply hold shift while building or press "Z" to toggle it on/off.
Hope this helps, if not feel free to reply. :)

When attaching blocks to each other, especially when trying to build on top of another, when building a wall for example, is there a hidden sweet spot or somewhing where to aim in order to get the grid to appear in the right square?
I have been trying to put the triangle piece on my wall end for about 45 mins now, have bui8lt scaffolding so I can aim above, below, sideways etc. Right now, I think this is the biggest issue I have with the game, creating simple structures is too awkward for block placing and no one seems to have covered it in guides etc
