Requirements

In order to do this trick you need a follower or an Housecarl and obviously your items marked as Stolen.
How To Proceed

Head to your house, open a chest and place your items marked as Stolen inside of it.
  • Order your follower/Housecarl to take everything inside the chest by talking to him/her and selecting "I need you to do something" and select the chest.
  • The follower/Housecarl will take all the items inside the chest.
  • Now talk again to your follower/Housecarl and select "I need you to carry some things".
  • Take back your items from his/her inventory.
Done! Your items are not marked as Stolen anymore.

I tested this with many chests and the trick worked for me. If it doesn't work for you, use the dresser inside Farengar's room at Dragonsreach.

If you want to get gold pickpocketing everyone is more profitable than stealing items since the vendors only have limited gold and pickpocketing gold can go on forever with no limit.

I noticed if you put every item in the game into 1 box, when they respawn they do not count as stealing if you take it again so you can loot all the respawns as not stolen everywhere than you can sell all stolen items.

If you want to do this in a less exploity way, you can pawn an item to a fence and re-buy it from them to clean it, so to speak.

It seems to work with containers owned by someone else who is okay with you taking stuff. In my case, I used a barrel outside of Radiant Raiment.

Just wanted to confirm that even with the latest version of the Unofficial Skyrim SE Patch, this method still works with the Dresser in Farengar's Room in Dragonreach, All of the items at the Dawnstar Museum that would normally be flagged as stolen appear normal, I used Lydia and I do have Amazing Follower Tweaks installed as well and it still worked, which is absolutely fantastic considering I'm playing with Legacy of the Dragonborn installed and it seems that the only way to get certain artifacts is to "Steal" them, however if I ever want to use one of the artifacts I would need to Steal them again from the Museum Display, this solves that problem.

I found that if you drop the item on the ground it says steal. go into console and click on the item and type "setOwnership". look away from it, then back to it and the item goes from steal to take and the stolen tag is gone.

Will confirm this trick works with Farengar's dresser in his room at Dragonsreach. It does not work for me for chests in my house or found in nearby dungeons.

Useful. I've somehow ended up with a couple of things with stolen tags that I *know* weren't stolen. They don't matter any more because I've got enough stuff now with being higher level, but this would have been really, really helpful earlier on when the items were still relevant. :P
