Description
This is a collection of system interchanges - major grade-separated junctions for connecting highways together. They are small enough to be usable in a typical city, while reflecting the principles behind real world interchanges.

Stack
Created by Aenarion
The classic four-level interchange, with high speed ramps for all movements. Widely used in the US, and Texas in particular. United Kingdom: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.2646265,-0.1282782,15z United States: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@32.6618138,-...
Turbine
Created by Aenarion
The turbine is an attractive two-level design suitable for high volumes, also known as a 'whirlpool'. It is used worldwide, with Belgium and China having a notable fondness for them. Belgium: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.5202165,4.8824892,16z United S...
Windmill
Created by Aenarion
The windmill is related to the turbine, but with tighter turns in its ramps, which often appear like the blades of a windmill. In the UK it is referred to as an 'octopus'. Windmills can also be found in China, Germany, Italy, and the US (e.g. California, K...
Cloverleaf
Created by Aenarion
The original way of connecting two highways together. My version uses a collector/distributor arrangement to take the weaving between the loops off the highway mainlines. Cloverleafs are by far the most common four-way freeflow interchanges in the world, w...
Cloverstack
Created by Aenarion
This three-level design is an effective compromise between a stack and a cloverleaf. The only European example is on the outskirts of Paris; they can be found in many US states including California, Kansas, Missouri, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. France: ht...
Cloverturbine
Created by Aenarion
This design replaces two loops in a cloverleaf with cyclic ramps, offering higher speeds for these movements and no weaving. This is a reasonably common design, with Spain having half a dozen and many in Asia. Spain: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@40.51948...
Clovermill
Created by Aenarion
This design combines two cloverleaf-style loops with two windmill-style ramps, eliminating weaving. It only uses two levels and is compact for a freeflow design, but ramp speed is lower than in a stack- or turbine-based interchange. The clovermill is widel...
Stackturbine
Created by Aenarion
A combination of the stack and turbine, this three-level design allows for very high ramp speeds. The stackturbine is widely used in the US (e.g. Arizona, California, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin), but Europe's only pu...
Partially-unrolled cloverleaf
Created by Aenarion
This hybrid interchange contains elements of the cloverleaf, turbine and stack. The name 'partially-unrolled cloverleaf' comes from the UK, where there are three; examples can also be found in Austria, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Taiwan and th...
Half cloverleaf
Created by Aenarion
Half cloverleaf, half turbine. But unlike a true cloverturbine, the loops are adjacent, creating a cloverleaf-style weaving space that can be handled with collector/distributor lanes. This is a very common design globally, with dozens in Europe (Spain alon...
3/4 stack
Created by Aenarion
A stack where one of the semi-direct ramps is replaced with a loop. They are popular in California; the only one in Europe is near Cologne, Germany. Germany: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.9516365,7.0374748,16z United States: https://www.google.co.uk/ma...
3/4 turbine
Created by Aenarion
A turbine with one of the cyclic ramps replaced with a loop. This is a standard design in China, which has dozens of them. There are several other examples worldwide, including three in Finland. Finland: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@61.4878983,23.5839703...
3/4 cloverleaf
Created by Aenarion
Three quarters of a cloverleaf, with a cyclic ramp replacing one of the loops. Remaining weaving can be mitigated with collector/distributor roads. This is the second most common fourway freeflow interchange design worldwide after the cloverleaf, with sign...
Corner cloverstack
Created by Aenarion
Just what you need for a highway to turn a corner at a freeflow interchange. A similar interchange is used between the 403 and 407 in Ontario, Canada: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@43.526704,-79.7268222,15z Configuration: one mainline, one semi-direct ram...
Cloverleaf with half stack
Created by Aenarion
Exactly what it sounds like: a full cloverleaf with half a stack on top of it. This is to provide C/D lane connectivity. Configuration: 2 semi-direct ramps, 4 loops Capacity: Very high Cost: 77,200 Built using No Pillars by BloodyPenguin. Part of 'Aenarion...
Double stack
Created by Aenarion
An even bigger and badder version of the four-level stack, with extra ramps to connect C/D lanes. Actually more like one and a half stacks, but who's counting? Configuration: 6 semi-direct ramps Capacity: Extreme Cost: 70,700 Built using No Pillars by Bloo...
