By Pte Jack
There are 2 methods of getting the Paintable Team Skins to work in SFM.

One is the recommended way, the other works, but it is not high recommended to be done this way.

The Correct Way to do this

This method involves some work, but it minimizes the risk to your Model and Skin assets being used in your project. Only the paintable skins are given a higher priority.

The Fast and Dangerous way of Doing This

this method simply pushes the Workshop Folder to the Top of the Priority List. This will give ALL your Workshop items the 2nd highest priority (under UserMod) in your Search Stack.

Hey I love this :) it helps me with making unique classes for my animation I am trying to work on but I notice a weird glitch with Medic from latest update that the player\medic model is now all colored grey and when you color him the color pains his clothes and gloves in a whole and he can no longer look like original model.

Figured I just let everyone know about this, I did EXACTLY what video for recommended instructed and ran into this weird issue so I am hoping this gets fixed next update, but still awesome :) thank you so much I will just be sure to use HWM\Medic for when I want to color gloves and all that separate and keep him looking like original if need original red or blue ^^ keep up awesome work.

I show you 2 ways to get these to work.

Because paintable materials require certain VMT commands to work and the original VMTs don't have those commands, these have to be in a modfolder in the same pathway and be named the same as the original materials (VMTs).
That modfolder must have a higher priority than both the TF and TF_Movies modFolders so these VMTs are read first and the originals ignored when the modfolder is active.

You should never over write original materials or textures or use the usermod modfolder with modded files.

You should always use custom modfolders and use the hierarchy of folders to control custom files

The SDK has nothing to do with this other than the VTFs (the textures) need to be in a folder that SFM knows about. The texture changes are done through Override Materials from the model (through the Element viewer).
