Preamble
Builded myself a arcade cabinet for steam games. It's simply a computer sitting an old arcade machine. It has a LED 22 inch display and the original arcade controls mounted to to usb. I know that purists hate this, and that some might think it is untrue blah blah. So what? Call it a case mod than. The original machine was broken and i got a exiting building project for two crates of beer. Im happy that i brought it back to live and that it is able to play some simple games.

The main idea is to run steam on it in big picture mode as the basic overlay, and to just use a steam controller as additional input. I started to sort out games from my library (fun part) that may work well, and (as alwas) i spend a lot of cash in the current sale. The controls scheme is really simple, there are two player inputs each has 4 buttons (the computer realizes them as two analog controllers) - done with the Ultimarc A-pac.

Now i am trying what games work best this will be my list.
If you are into the topic and want to be a help me with the list you are welcome, leave a comment and i will invite you as a co-outhor. Together we can create a ultimative list, aswell you can correct my lazy germanized english.
How the ranking works
  • There will be 10 points for the best possible arcade experiance.
  • I tested a lot of games, many of them seem perfect for a arcade project first glimpse, than i figured that more than half the (sorted out arcade) games do ONLY support the Xbox controller- OR you cant mount the buttons yourself. Every third game, or so, would really benefit from a controller support, but does only keyboard and mouse. Some games recognize my controller but it goes Uo or Down in the menues, or it does controls well, but a mouse is required anyway (mostly just to click one time somewhere).
That seems picky, and YES i am aware that there are programs like „joy to key“, „x360ce“ or "Xpadder" that can solve the problem, but it seems to me that some lazy developers also know that they exist. In some cases they even recommend them in the steam support forums, instead to fix their games.
I dont want to have a keyboard and mouse laying around, my setup is designed to work out of the box - in any meaning. This is just impractically.

So for start i will mainly focus on controlls and out of the box playability.
    - 2 points for no direct input sopport.
    - 1 for lack of controller mapping
    - Rest of the point is for the feelgood and playability of a game.
A very good game where you need a additional programm to run, can still have 7/10 points, i think its fair.
Let me know what you think of it in the comments - as i wrote the list is not ment to be static or absolute. I am totally open for suggestions critics and ideas. I also invide you to be a part of this.

  • I only list the number of buttons you need for gameplay (no pause / menu-controlls).

  • For a simple overview i will sort the games by gernre than by alphabet.

  • YES i tested all the games on my cab.

I don't see metion of whether the games run in horizontal or portait mode. The image of your machine is running portrait, but I don't know if you have the option to rotate or not.

I custom build at cocktail cabinet (a few pics here: https://photosforsteam.blogspot.ca/) running windows @ 1080x1920, which is great for many games. Other games don't like windows in portrait, and then some games - eg Metal Slug, are fine, but obviously quite small with large black boxes above and below. To deal with the issue, my end goal is to also mount 2 sets of additional controls on the side, for horizontal and 2 player games.

Great list. Thanks for putting it together. I've been searching Steam for games that work on my cabinet, and there aren't as many as you would hope. The ones that do work absolutely rock! I like having a cabinet and not taking up the lounge room TV, and I prefer to stand up for a quick blast of games rather than sitting on my butt on my laptop with a controller.
