Intro
When you're high level (85+), you'll find that it's really hard to build up your limit break gauges against normal enemies because of all the HP you have. Since your HP is so high, enemies will be doing little damage to you, making your limit break bar build up very slowly. With this guide, you'll be able to bypass this problem and quickly grind out our limit breaks.
Required equipment
  • 1x HP ↔ MP: You will need this to be able to take enough damage to have a character's limit build up.
  • 20+ or more Hyper items: Fury is essential for building up your Limit Break meter quickly, and Hyper puts characters in Fury if they aren't in Sadness. Since you're at the end of the game, there's no harm in getting the maximum amount of Hypers.
  • 1x Restore materia: You'll need this to keep your characters alive.
  • 20+ Phoenix Down or 1x Revive materia: To revive the characters you're training in case they die.
  • 1x Enemy Skill materia: You'll need one with Mantra Magic to quickly grind enemies.
Optional (but useful) equipment
  • Another HP ↔ MP materia: If you have a spare HP <-> MP, give it to another character so you can grind two characters at once.
  • Master Magic: This lets you heal and revive with one materia. Handy!
  • 1x Exit materia or 20+ Smoke Bombs: You'll need these to escape certain encounters.
  • 1x Enemy Lure materia: Use this to encounter enemies more often. Not required, but it'll speed things up a bit. Having two starts on it will make enemies appear faster, but it's not required for it to be effective.
  • 1x Pre-Emptive materia: Used to reduce the amount of times enemies will hit you from your sides or back attacks.
  • Another Enemy Skill materia with Mantra Magic: If you're grinding two characters, give the other character another Enemy Skill materia with Mantra Magic so he or she can grind kills along with the other character.
Getting your characters set up
Now that you have your gear, you need to get your characters set up.

Keep Cloud as you normally have him built, but give him a Restore (or Master Magic, if you have it) materia. He'll be your main healer and will clear out enemies if things start getting bad or there's one monster left. Put your Exit, Enemy Lure, and Pre-Emptive materias on him as well.

Now, for the character (or characters, if you have two HP ↔ MP materia) you want to limit break grind: Give them an HP<-> MP materia, use a Hyper Item, then put them in the front row. The materia will make their HP low enough that their limit break meter will quickly build after getting hit by an enemy, the Hyper item will make the limit break meter build faster, and being in the front row will make them take the maximum amount of damage from an enemy's attack ,which translates into a faster limit break meter.

If you only have one HP ↔ MP materia, keep the third character without it the same as he/she usually are. He'll just be defending during the entire grinding session. If you do have a spare HP ↔ MP materia, swap the third character to another one that you need to limit break grind and set them up the same way you did with the second character.
Grinding the 1-2, 2-2, and 3-3 limits
It's time to head out and start grinding. For the 1-2, 2-2, and 3-2 limits, you need to have your characters use their 1-1, 2-1, and 3-1 limits enough. However, if you're high level, you'll find it's very hard to build up your limit break meter, even with Fury. To fix this, we're combining the HP ↔ MP materia, the Fury status, and the creatures in the Crashed Gelnika to quickly build up the Limit Break.

Get in the submarine and swim over to the Crashed Gelnika near Costa Del Sol. An image showing where to dive to the Gelnika is to the right, in case your forgot.

Once you're in the Gelnika, go through the door to the left of the save point until you reach a small room with some barrels in it, which is shown to the right. If you've been here before, it's the room you fight Reno and Rude in while going through the Gelnika in Disk 2. When you're in that room, keep running around until a fight starts. That room is good for limit break grinding because the enemies there are strong enough to quickly build up a limit break bar, but won't OHKO your characters often, like the Unknown-type enemies found in the rest of the Gelnika would.

When you're in a fight, let them beat the crap out of the character you want to Limit Break grind. The monsters in this room are strong enough to quickly build up that character's limit break (thanks to the HP ↔ MP materia and Fury status). Once that character hits his or her's limit break, use it. This will usually kill the creature. Keep doing this until there's one more enemy in the fight. When there is, have Cloud finish the monster off because it'll take forever for the monster to trigger a limit break again. Use regular Cure to heal character(s) that have low HP, and don't forget to revive them if they go down.

If you're caught in a side attack, use Exit or a Smoke Bomb to escape as soon as possible. These encounters will tear the character(s) you're trying limit break grind up.
Grinding the 2-1 and 3-1 limit breaks
Grinding for the 2-1 and 3-1 limit breaks is less risky, but it takes more time. To unlock them, you need to kill a certain amount of enemies with each character. You're going to do the usual Mythril Mine grind trick you've probably read in other guides to do this.

It's simple: unequip HP ↔ MP on the character(s) you have, give them an Enemy Materia with Mantra Magic, head to the back room in the Mythril Mines (the cave you went in after avoiding the snake all the way back in Disk 1), and kill enemies with that character by using Mantra Magic until their 2-1 or 3-1 limit breaks are unlocked. When that's done, go back to the Gelnika and use the HP ↔ MP materia to grind more limit breaks. Repeat this pattern until you reach the 3-2 limit break, then use that character's Level 4 limit break item to unlock it. Keep going until all of your characters have unlocked their Level 4 limit breaks.
