Regarding shell normalization I did not touch that subject at all because unless the players consistently hits the lower glacis of a tank there is usually no problem as the shell will still deal some damage.
The same goes for shell weight, HEAT, HE and similar have slower speeds and honestly I could make a reference to it :P In arcade it does not matter as much but in simulation and realistic modes it does make a lot of difference.
As for how HEAT rounds work, basically the damage "cones" out once it hits the armor.
HEAT-FS is muuuuch superior to HEAT as the penetration makes it basically stupid to take anything else, just aim for the gunner/engine and bam, enemy is a sitting duck. The low weight of HEAT-FS makes it reload quite fast as well. (Careful with it though, if your aim is off, its barely going to cause any "shrapnel")
The AC round is basically a HE shell exploding inside the enemy :) but it bounces very easily against slopped armor, Also it has a rather long "fuse time" so on small tanks, it might pass through the tank before it explodes, making the HE filler void
Also APCR is lighter the AP rounds, and therefore it reloads in the gun faster(a hidden stat)
The first round loaded after switching ammo types is also slower at loading(probably because the re-loader was preparing to load the old shell, and has to relocate to the new shell type)
APDS rounds are slightly more inaccurate then APCR rounds because of the drag caused by ripping off the outer casing(researching the gun modules for better aim basically negates this though) but at the same time there shot at a MUCH faster speed, making them technically more accurate as well (Was unaware of APDS-FS being added, what tanks have it?)
I own the " Complete Tankery Guide ", the number two war thunder guide, and i would like your permission to link this guide under my ammo section as it has a much easier to understand format then mine.
Normalization is a rather important feature (Normalization- when a shell hits armor at an. angle, it “bends” towards the plate and slightly reduces the angle, thus making the armor thinner.)
APC/APBC/APBCB/APHEBC are greatly effected by this.
You also don't really touch on the weight of the shells, and how greatly this effects aim.(Generally shells like HEAT and HESH are very heavy and are harder to aim because of this)
@Xeridan I love russian tanks and as such I use APHE or APHEBC constantly, but against these types of targets I am forced to load HE to kill as much crew as I can, APHE and similar always leaves someone alive, but again, it is rare for me to be able to hit the wheels of a truck.
Unless you have a specific ammo type in mind when you refer to "big derp shell with lots of explosive" instead of HE.
@Rawrkitteh thanks for the info!
Also nowadays regular AP shells can do great against trucks and other very light vehicles... By shooting their chassis. Even a T-34 with its 76 mm gun gets "Hull Break" on such vehicles, just by shooting through the wheels.
