Meatball's Iron Mining - Best Practices Guide
Vytvořil: A Spicy Meatball
This guide was created for players who don't know how to easily find iron. It also contains a few advanced mining techniques, some example screenshots, and a video in which I randomly flew off and found 23 nodes of iron in under 5 minutes.

Iron Mining - Best Practices
Many people new to Creativerse find it difficult to mine large amounts of iron. Whether its because the iron blends in with it's surroundings, people don't look hard enough, or do not use the best techniques, for whatever reason, this guide is for those who cannot easily find iron.
Where is Iron found?
Iron is found in the stalactite layer. There are two primary rock types in this layer, and several ancillary block types.

The first type of rock is Siltstone. it is a soft brown color, and often contains glowing mushrooms, is often interspersed with saltrock, and even mold. Silstone is used in many recipes.

The second type is stalactite. This is a darker brown color There are a few recipe uses for stalactites.
and

Iron is a node, much like coal. and it must be extracted from this node using an ore extractor. The best extractor a new player can use, is the bright blue Advanced extractor. If possible, obtain a super extractor to get the most out of the extraction process.

I FOUND iron! Yay! What do I do now?
First, you need some torches or light. If you do not know how to make these, you shouldnt be hunting iron yet.

To find iron when you first start in a world, go searching for holes in the ground, pretty much anywhere except mountains and higher elevations. Often you can find these holes in forests or grasslands and one of the very best locations is along the shore of the ocean! Enter this hole and you will find a cave, (if you don't find a deep enough cave, go find another!). search the cave, looking for stalactites or siltstone. Be careful of monsters!

Place a light or a torch down every now and then and scan the walls, ceiling, and the floor for a red node of iron.

Place your extractor on the iron, and when it is complete, head back to your base and forge it into iron bars.
Advanced mining techniques
The best way to obtain significant amounta of iron is to train your ability in crafting until you can create the Strong TNT explosive. Once you can make this powerful explosive, you can now obtain tremendous amounts of iron.

With the Strong tnt, you dig down, or go into a cave until you hit the stalactite layer. Once you are at least 5 blocks deep in this layer, dig into a wall 5 blocks, place a Strong tnt at eye level, set it off and run like the devil is after you.

After the explosion, you might see iron, mine it and continue. Go into the big hole you made, and in one of the walls, dig 5 blocks in, and repeat the process of placing a Strong tnt, setting it off, running out.

I will often do this in a straight line for a while, and then take a sharp turn and go into a side wall 5 paces, and repeat the process, coming back in the direction I started.

This method will yield tens of thousands of iron, on EVERY claim. Including in the ocean.

There are 26,400 claims on every world. This means that there are hundreds of thousands of iron nodes to mine.

Please note that you can use Super tnt the same way in the corruption layer to obtain Lumite, and in the fossil layer you would use strong tnt to get coal and obsidian in the same manner. a single claim can yield tens of thousands of each type of ore.

Once you have some iron mining under your belt, you can then switch to the advanced tnt to clear more rock in the mining process. This will require some hardened lava to craft! So craft wisely!
You won't just find iron!
After blasting a hole in the wall, a large amount of surface area is exposed. Mold, mud, glowing mushrooms, and saltrock are then very easily seen and can be taken from the walls formed by the explosion. even if you don't find iron with a super tnt, you can find a tremendous amount of these other ancillary, important materials.

Obtaining Materials for Super tnt
Goo
Goo is most easily obtained by taking mold from the stalactite level and putting it into the machine processor. You get 6 goo per 1 mold.

Gunpowder
Gunpowder is most easily obtained by processing coal in the processor. You may also obtain it by searching for glowing chests at night on the surface and grabbing the goodies within. The best place to find chests is the grasslands where glowing chests are easy to spot in the dark. You can also find chests underground, but since this often entails having to stun and kill creatures, it is 'cheaper' to just hunt them on the surface at night.

Gunpowder is also difficultly obtained by killing hotfeet, which are spawned on the lava layer. I recommend that if you are killing hotfeet for gunpowder that you use stun bombs on them, or have a nice sword and plenty of health potions. Stun bombs followed by stabbing them is the cheapest way to kill hotfeet. You can also kill hotfeet with a couple explosive bombs, eliminating the need to stab them after you stun them. Hunting hotfeet for gunpower is a waste of time, and damage to your weapon.

Iron
Iron is the third ingredient, and comes full circle in its own procurement. This is why your first few nodes of iron must be found in caves, so that you can make bombs to find more iron.

Where else can iron be found?
Iron can be found in Diamond Chests, which are located in the Corruption Layer. (the bottom layer of the world)

On average, there are usually 5 to 10 raw iron in a diamond chest, but you can often find more. Using the Pro DLC glider, I am able to pick up 150 to 200 diamond chest an hour, without ever falling ill from the influences of the corruption layer.

What this means is that I can often find 400 to 600 iron an hour without even trying hard. I once obtained almost 4000 iron in an hour just picking up chests.
additional info: Excavators
Excavators are different type of explosives. Instead of destroying rock, they will collect some of it, and place it in bags, and in the same action, clear out an area 7 x 7 x 7, leaving the nodes.

Before:

After:

The only kind of excavator that works in the stalactite layer, is the super excavator. It is expensive in that it uses Lumite, so I suggest you use it wisely.

I have discovered a way to harvest 800 to 1k per hour of iron ore, or any ore node by using the blueprint capturing block.you can use it to scan for empty holes in the rock strata by scanning one layer at a time. The nodes dont show up in the scan but you can see them by the holes left behind in the layer, mushrooms show up as seeds and nodes are empty blank spots or caves. I simply make a hole in ground with ladders and then mine out each level in a 3 block height sections.its best to start at the top of a strata like the stalactite layer, other wise your mining over your lower levels, and i have built some seriously huge swish cheese mine labyrinths. Great for those treasure hunters :D

stalactite layer can now be excavated with the advanced excavator, maybe worth the update since its much cheaper to craft.

First off, great guide. Time to review

Appeal - GREAT: This is where the guide is the strongest. Your guide tackles a problem that I would say every player has had at least once. It even appeals to me, someone who has played the game for many many hours.

Content - GOOD: The content is very useful and informitive, but I think you missed one important thing in your guide. I reccomend adding a section warning players to make sure the world/claim has explosions enabled. There have been countless times where I make a bunch of excavators/tnt only to realize explosions are off. Overall though, you tackle the iron problem well in this guide.

Presentation - GREAT: The way you lay out the guide's chapters makes sense, and helps me navigate through it easily. The pictures and video help sell the guide and it's information to me. And the text has a personality that isn't obnoxious, but isn't monotone either. It gets the point across.

Overall, I say this is an 9/10.
