Ten things to know when starting out
By FogHeart
When you've just been awoken from centuries of sleep, and find yourself in a ruined utopia, strapped inside a tech suit, and confronted by an army of mutated hostile people, the world is a confusing, bewildering place. Read this to get started with survival.

You too can survive in this ruined city...
1. You're probably immediately struck by how much scanning you need to do, and wonder why the game is set up this way. Scanning containers ends up being useful rather than a hindrance when you know that you can scan a container from quite a long distance away. You don't have to walk right up to it, to the point where your blue scanning field touches the container. After scanning from distance, then you know whether it's worth walking over to it or walking away.

2. The seekers - security bots - are your friends, don't harm them unless they are aggressive towards you (you will lose that fight anyway, run away!) If a citizen is chasing you, run to a seeker, the citizen will fixate on the nearest target, and if that's a seeker they will lose that fight. But don't let them catch you hacking open a container, if they see you at it they will want to arrest you. On sight, they will throw up a holographic security cordon around you - if you step out of that then it's considered resisting arrest and they will turn hostile. If you leave the cordon by accident or design, run away!

3. If you stay in the cordon and allow the seeker to approach and arrest you, you are transported to rehab in the Garrison section of the city. That's not too big a deal, the doors aren't locked, but since any seeker in rehab expects you to remain in your room they'll be hostile if they see you. Sneak away from them. Garrison itself is a tower with many levels. The centre of each level is a circular corridor with lifts (er, elevators) and staircases, the outer edges house the facilities for each level, when you exit rehab find a lift and choose the floor with Reception to get out.

4. While hacking, you have a percentage which indicates the probability that a failed hack will alert 'Security'. Fail, and you 'roll the dice' on that probability, if you lose then a number of citizens will spawn nearby and head for your location. The percentage counts upwards during the hack, but you can find/buy a module that slows that right down, so then failed hacks rarely alert seekers. You can also find, sometimes, security keys which you use to bypass layers during hacking.

5. You'll get into combat eventually, it's inevitable. Don't get too close, these citizens have sharp bony protrusions that damage on close contact. When you throw a punch that's on target, i.e your target reticule is directly on the enemy and you are within range, then you will lunge forward. Use that to your advantage to stay out of their reach. Hit and back off, hit and back off. You might stun the enemy - if it stands passively with its head rolling about on its shoulders you've done it. You'll have a couple of seconds to get a free shot in, and you can hold down attack to power it up for a stronger hit. Don't take on more than one without protection or weaponry.

6. Blocking with an arm is good, a shield is better. Equip a shield as soon as you've found it. While blocking you can do a shield bash with attack button, it will hurt more than a quick fist but will sap shield energy from the shield which will replenish over a bit of time, so don't bash continually. If they're stunned use charged fist strike instead. Again stay back and ensure your reticule is over your enemy to lunge forward.

7. When you start a life all areas in the city will have emergency power lighting. Each area has a store of power, like a giant battery, for lights and kiosks. This power store isn't anywhere you can see, don't go looking for it. But the lights drain the power from the store so eventually the areas go dark, unless you find the power control units to transfer more power from the city's central reserve into the area's store, like an instant recharge from the mains supply. Try hard to memorise the location of the power control units in each area: not the ones where you can choose the light level, the ones where you transfer energy from Eden's reserves to the energy storage for the area. No area energy means no lights and no kiosks. Eden's reserves replenish over time from the city's power generators (cyanotril) but the power in each area will not, so you'll find yourself entering new areas and having to reach these power control units to turn the lights back on.

8. You need arms and armour. You can find it over time, but the highest concentration is in the Garrison barracks. The quickest way to get there is to be deliberately arrested. Find a lift in Garrison, choose a floor with barracks and start looting the domiciles. You may need some hacking skills to get the best loot. There isn't much in the way of food or water there so come prepared.

9. You get two weapon slots, fore and dorsal. They use energy for ammo, you start with a basic power pack not shown in the inventory but you can fill its slot with a better model which holds more energy or one that recharges over time, thus you can carry fewer energy cells in your inventory which recharge the power pack when used. You also get two utility module slots to enhance the weapons, change the power draw, or provide a sort of radar. The weapons, power and utilities can be improved by collecting upgrade cells and installing them on each unit. It's a lot like weapon/rig upgrading in Dead Space games. In your inventory, select your loadout item, then the tab for upgrades, then click on an available node on the grid when you have an upgrade cell to insert there.

10. Along the same lines you can find Compute cells which upgrade your rig with special abilities. When you have cells to spend, select PAMELA on your...AARM...and select an ability to upgrade. Assign abilities to the quick select slots to the left of the main display so you can use them in game.

(small bonus tip: when an object is on the floor, you can hold down the pick up button to open a radial menu and select to use it straight away)

To add to this: If you do get a security alert and don't want to bother getting arrested from failed hacking, check if there is a place to hide. The best situation (ironically) is if there is only one entrance to the place so you can crouch beside the door and wait for the Seeker to enter. The Seeker will always inspect the hacked container or door first if it doesn't see you. While it's doing this, you can just sneak out the open door.

Sneaking in general is pretty good since you can get a lot closer to enemies before they aggro and will certainly help at the start.
