Introduction
The game takes place approximately a year before the events of the first BioShock, and depicts the events of the Rapture Civil War. The player takes the role of spliced characters testing products for Sinclair Solutions, a company owned by Augustus Sinclair which attempts to cash in on the conflict between Andrew Ryan and Atlas, while conducting field testing for Ryan Industries. Each team has its own narrator providing voice-over on the events of the match, Atlas' side has a strong-spirited woman who refers to the enemy as "Fascists," while Ryan's team is organized by a man who calls the enemy the "Parasites."

Characters
There are ten playable characters . Each character has their own back story, a unique melee weapon, and unique dialogue during gameplay.

List of characters
  • Jacob Norris is a stand-up guy. A gifted and innovative metallurgist, his considerable skills as a welder were essential to the construction of Rapture's physical foundations. Responding to dangerous and consistently deteriorating conditions in Rapture worksites, Jacob has become a vehement and highly vocal supporter of labor reform, and is therefore regarded as something of a hero by his peers. The onset of the civil war finds Jacob fighting for this cause as aggressively as ever.

  • Barbara Johnson is a dutiful housewife and an attentive mother. She arrived in Rapture hoping that the unique and exciting circumstances of life under the sea would dispel the sense of dissatisfaction that plagued her topside. And at first it did. But as the novelty of her new environment wore off, and her household duties again demanded her full attention, she found herself once again beset by the familiar and nagging sense that there must be something more.

  • Danny Wilkins is a naturally gifted athlete whose remarkable abilities have secured a perfect record for Ryan's Raiders every season he’s been on the team. Danny does not recall ever having lost at anything. Though he does recognize that he has on occasion been on a losing team, he argues that the loss itself has never been his fault. Losses on these occasions were invariably attributable to his teammates, and, furthermore, in every case, Danny was otherwise occupied breaking and setting various records of his own.

  • Buck Raleigh made his money in bourbon. He is a self-made businessman in the bourbon industry from the American south with an intrepid nature and boundless ambition. He is known as a ruthless and cutthroat negotiator who frequently defied government regulations. Eventually he was put on trial for tax evasion, but before a ruling could be made, Raleigh disappeared. Buck came to Rapture fed up with the disruption governmental interference consistently caused in his industry topside, and has been an eager and avid competitor in Rapture’s unregulated markets.

  • Naledi Atkins is a fearless pilot with a love for the mechanical and kinetic. Before she came to Rapture, she was well known around the world for her feats of daring. A fellow pilot, Cal Whitkins, noted her disappearance on the surface and commented that she had probably gone in search of some great adventure. In Rapture her ravenous appetite for adventure is the primary factor in deciding which contracts Naledi will accept as a freelance pilot of submersibles. Naledi lives her life as dictated by the demands of the moment, and does not deal in regret. She lives her life always at least one step ahead of boredom.

  • Suresh Sheti is a masterful mentalist whose confident performances have universally mystified audiences around the world. He arrived in Rapture, joined the performance troupe at Fort Frolic, and proceeded to amaze the city’s denizens with a preternatural and Plasmid-enhanced stage show featuring astonishing acts of mind control and clairvoyance, and challenging preconceived notions of what is or isn’t possible.

  • Zigo d’Acosta earned his gruff, pitiless, and highly superstitious nature chasing some of the world’s most dangerous game out on the open waters of the sea. He was born aboard a whaling ship, and, for all intents and purposes, was raised by the only two entities that figured into his life with any sort of consistency: the ship’s captain and the sea itself. Zigo d'Acosta came to Rapture eager to experience the sea from a new perspective.

  • Mlle Blanche de Glace is an internationally acclaimed actress of rich emotional depth. She arrived in Rapture eager to captivate a new audience. A passionate woman with a history of torrid love affairs, she searches for a partner who can match her intensity and satisfy her appetites, but has yet to find one. She oscillates between periods of extreme reclusion, shunning all personal interaction, and times of exceptional sociability, when her hunger for contact seems insatiable.

  • Louie McGraff likes to hurt people. And he's good at it. He's been doing it for as long as he can remember. But causing physical pain isn't the only criminal activity he excels at. Among other things, he's also a highly competent bamboozler and smuggler, which is how he got himself into Rapture. Before being apprehended and incarcerated in a temporary brig, Louie "worked" the fisheries as a stevedore -- a job that provided many opportunities to exercise his natural talents.

  • Oscar Calraca is both a lover and a fighter. As a younger man, his business savvy, dedicated work ethic, and discriminating tastes earned him a fortune in cosmetics. Now, his concerns are more sensual in nature, and his tastefully extravagant A-list parties make him a permanent fixture in Rapture's gossip pages.
First steps
The prologue starts on the Eve of 1959, at the Apartment which each participant receives from joining the Sinclair Solutions Home Consumer Reward Program. The player slowly recovers from their first injection of a Plasmid, delivered in a pack with a few weapons and other genetic enhancements as a first batch of products to test. As they recover, a speech from Andrew Ryan is broadcast on TV, in which he makes a toast to the coming year, wishing Rapture to recover from its current tensions. Once the player finishes to listen to the first company message from Sinclair Solutions' recording machine, an emergency announcement informs the player of a recent incident at the Kashmir Restaurant, thus marking the beginning of the Civil War.

The player is then able to start matches, gaining experience from each session and unlocking new content from each Rank. Those include new Plasmids and experimental ones, weapons, Gene Tonics, but also new masks and melee weapons to customize their avatar. It also unlocks messages from the Sinclair Solutions program, detailing briefly the situation in Rapture as the player progresses through the Bronze Club, Silver Society, Gold Circle, Platinum League and Diamond Partners, new Audio Diaries from the Log Recorder in the Apartment, detailing the personal story of each of the playable characters. New quotes from the Rapture Standard local newspaper and from various individuals commenting on the war reveal the growing collapse of society as the war progresses.
Ranks
The player earns ADAM by playing online matches and completing trials. As they collect ADAM, they level up. With each level advancement they will unlock new weapons, Plasmids, and Gene Tonics to customize their loadout. The player can create three separate loadouts and switch between them when respawning. It is prudent to use a loadout that complements one's teammates in the team-based modes. At the start of the multiplayer experience, the player only has access to the Pistol and the Shotgun, as well as the Electro Bolt, Incinerate!, and Winter Blast Plasmids, with Gene Tonics. However, after advancing through the game they will receive the Machine Gun, followed by other new tools. Alongside combat-oriented gifts, players are able to change their character's cosmetic traits. For example, one may endow their character with a mask or change their melee weapon (this does not affect its combat traits, however). Along with leveling, there are "trials" in multiplayer requiring the player to complete a certain task, such as killing a certain amount of enemies using a specific weapon or Plasmid.

There are fifty levels of character advancement and five "clubs" (overarching ranks). The names of the clubs are the Bronze Club, the Silver Society, the Gold Circle, the Platinum League, and the Diamond Partners. Upon reaching Rank 50, the player reaches Diamond Partner status, which represents the ultimate level of advancement through the ranks. Membership of the aforementioned "clubs" is awarded when the player reaches a certain rank.

  • ADAM Vial Reward: 10 ADAM. Granted upon collecting one of the ADAM Vials scattered across the level.
  • Killing Streaks Reward: 50 ADAM. Granted upon killing three enemies in a row without dying.
  • Big Daddy Suit Reward: 50 ADAM. Granted upon picking up a Big Daddy Suit in the level.
  • Trial Complete Reward: Varies depending on the trial and its level. Granted upon completing a trial.
Game Modes and Maps
There are seven different game modes included in BioShock 2. Each supports up to ten players. Team-based game modes divide the players into two factions: those fighting for Andrew Ryan and those battling under Atlas. Scores are marked in the top right corner of the HUD, with the one at the top representing the winning score. The score in yellow represents which team the player is playing for in that match. Also when playing in teams, allies will always be represented in blue, while opponents are represented in red. This also prevails for hacked devices and zones in Turf War game mode.
  • Survival of the Fittest– is the basic free-for-all deathmatch game mode of BioShock 2 Multiplayer. In this mode, each player is tasked with killing all other players as often as possible. The game ends either after a player gets 20 kills, or after 15 minutes, whichever occurs first.

  • Civil War – is the team deathmatch game mode of BioShock 2 Multiplayer. In this mode, players are split into two teams, Team Atlas and Team Ryan, and each team works together to try and score the most points. The first team to reach 500 points (50 kills), or with the most points when the timer runs out, wins.

  • Last Splicer Standing – is a game mode in the BioShock 2 Multiplayer, and is a team-based deathmatch where players don't respawn after dying. Whomever is the last Splicer alive is the winner of the match.

  • Capture the Sister – is a game mode for BioShock 2 Multiplayer. It is a variation of team CTF (Capture the Flag), with flags replaced by capturable Little Sisters who are guarded by a Big Daddy and Splicers.

  • ADAM Grab – is a game mode in BioShock 2 Multiplayer and each match can hold up to 6 players. There is one Little Sister in the level. Each player is tasked with capturing and holding her for as long as possible, earning ADAM continuously during the process. The player who managed to keep the Little Sister for the longest amount of time wins or until one player has hold her for 3 minutes.

  • Team ADAM Grab features similar mechanics to ADAM Grab: players are tasked with capturing a lone Little Sister in the level and keeping her for as long as possible. However, this time players are split into two teams: every member of the team who owns the Little Sister earns a continuous stream of ADAM, and the team at the end of the round who won the most of it wins.

  • Turf War – During the Turf War game mode of BioShock 2 Multiplayer players are split into two teams: Team Atlas and Team Ryan, and are tasked with capturing and holding the control points present in the level. A player standing close to a neutral or enemy control point will gradually charge up a meter, which will earn the player's team the control point if it fills up completely. The team that managed to maintain control over the most points for the longest amount of time by the end of the match wins.

  • Kill 'em Kindly- In this game mode, the players can only use golf clubs to strike enemies with melee attacks.

MAPS
There are ten different maps representing various areas from BioShock. These locations have been re-tooled to fit a multiplayer environment. They feature both familiar and original aesthetics and decorations. As is typical with this game series, a narrative is built into these environments, giving the player a unique look at Civil War-era Rapture.

Hacking
“Sure, the boys in Ryan's lab can make it hack-proof. But that don't mean we ain't gonna hack it.”
― Pablo Navarro

Hacking appears in BioShock 2 Multiplayer, as a much simpler rendition of the single-player form of hacking. Attempting to hack a machine in multiplayer does not result in a minigame, but instead, a loading bar on the screen. Once the bar is full, the hack is complete and the machine is friendly to the player.

Vending machines "Circus of Values"

The Circus of Values vending machines appear in the multiplayer, with several drastic changes. First of all, there is no longer an interface or a need for payment. After a short delay, the Circus of Values will respawn vials of EVE and ammunition in its chute. These completely refill the player's EVE and ammunition when collected. Circus of Values also have a light at the top right corner indicating their status:
  • Blue Light: A blue light indicates that the Circus of Values has been hacked by the player or a member of their team.
  • Yellow/White Light: A yellow/white light indicates that the Circus of Values hasn't been hacked, and will recharge anybody's resources instantly.
  • Red Light: A red light indicates that the Circus of Values has been hacked by an enemy, and should the player attempt to use it is will drop a small bomb. If the player is standing directly against the machine, the bomb will go off instantly and kill them.

It is possible to set traps by hacking Circus of Values vending machines, and successfully doing so will make it damage, if not kill, the next enemy who tries to use it. After that, it reverts to normal until hacked again.

Turrets

Turrets are Security Devices that function as Rapture's automated defense systems. They're stationary contraptions designed to shoot intruders on sight which can also be hacked by the player, turning them over to their side. Both the Machine Gun and Grenade Launcher Turret types exist in multiplayer. Along with some changes to the Turrets' behavior, the main change is to the Turret's "moods", reflected by the color of its light: :

  • Blue Light: A blue light on a Turret is friendly to the player.
  • White Light: A white light on a Turret is either unhacked or deactivated. Either way, it will not attack anyone.
  • Red Light: A red light on a Turret is hostile to the player, and will attack them on sight. When attacking an enemy, Turrets emit a sound identical to that of a Security Camera when having spotted an intruder.

In the multiplayer, Turrets cannot detect enemies behind them. This can be used to hack or destroy them safely. It should be noted that when a turret is destroyed, the explosion from the turret will deal damage.
Plasmids and weapons
A total of seven different weapons are available to the player, though some are only unlocked when leveling up. Weapons have been altered from their original version from BioShock as to balance gameplay for multiplayer matches. Melee in particular is different in that the player can perform a quick-melee attack without having to switch to a melee weapon. Each weapon can be upgraded with a choice between three upgrades per weapon, although only one upgrade can be equipped per weapon. The Research Camera exists in the form of a research option: passing near an enemy corpse opens a prompt offering the player the option to research the dead enemy. Doing so renders the player temporarily vulnerable, but grants them a damage bonus against that enemy upon researching them, and will only be lost if the player gets killed by the researched enemy, or wears a Big Daddy Suit.

List of weapons and its description

  • Pistol: Unlocked at Rank 1
The Pistol returns as a usable weapon in multiplayer, and is unlocked right from the start. It is listed as an accurate and moderately damaging weapon, good for mid-range combat.

  • Shotgun: Unlocked at Rank 1
It is listed as a highly damaging weapon, recommended for close-range combat.

Machine Gun: Unlocked at Rank 2.
in BioShock 2 Multiplayer is a fast-firing long-range weapon unlocked at Rank 2. This weapon is better used against multiple enemies or at close range, and increases recoil with continuous bursts.

  • Grenade Launcher: Unlocked at Rank 6.
It fires grenades that do high damage and have a wide splash damage radius. They fire in an arc, making targeting at long range require some estimating. Headshots with the Grenade Launcher will deal 150% normal damage.

  • Crossbow: Unlocked at Rank 10.
It fires single bolts with high damage that are effective at any range.

  • Nail Gun: Unlocked at Rank 14
It has a short delay before firing, but afterward, has the highest rate of fire of any weapon.

  • Elephant Gun: Unlocked at Rank 18
It is a slow-firing, slow-reloading, but extremely accurate two-shot weapon, allowing the user to score one-hit kills with a headshot.

These weapons do not have unique ammunition: unlike the singleplayer campaign, ammo takes the form of cartons of buckshot, and picking one up will fully restore all ammo to both weapons the player is carrying.

List of plasmids
  • Electro Bolt: Unlocked at Rank 1
  • Deals slight electrical damage and locks enemies in place, preventing them from moving. Deals greater damage to targets in water and temporarily electrifies the liquid. Can be charged for greater damage and increased stun duration.
  • Incinerate!: Unlocked at Rank 1
Ignites enemies and objects within a radius of the target, dealing fire damage over time. Can be charged for greater damage and area of effect. One fully charged burst removes two thirds of the target's health
  • Winter Blast: Unlocked at Rank 1
  • Enemies move at a slower speed and receive more damage from attacks. Can be charged for greater damage and longer freezing duration.
  • Aero Dash : Unlocked at Rank 4.
  • Gives the user a temporary speed boost, stunning and damaging enemy players who are impacted. Running into a frozen enemy will shatter them.
  • Geyser Trap : Unlocked at Rank 8.
  • Creates water traps that can be charged with Electro Bolt which toss enemies into the air. Can also be used by the caster to perform powerful jumps.
  • Telekinesis: Unlocked at Rank 12.
  • Picks up objects to throw; if none are present it will create one from the environment. All non-explosive objects thrown do the same amount of damage on impact. Impact also causes the target to stumble for a moment, preventing them from moving or attacking.
  • Houdini: Unlocked at Rank 16
  • Allows the user to turn invisible for a short time. Continuously drains EVE while it is activated.
  • Insect Swarm: Unlocked at Rank 20
  • Releases a swarm of killer bees, dealing minor damage to the targets over time and blur enemies for the duration of the Plasmid. The insects can be dispelled by meleeing them three times.

Big daddy suit
The player can become a Rosie Big Daddy by finding a Big Daddy Suit, which spawn at one of several predetermined locations inside the maps. Once the player wears one, he will have access to the Rivet Gun, six Proximity Mines, and a special Stomp attack which stuns nearby enemy players. The wearer also gains the ability to "squish" Splicers by falling on top of them from above. However, the player will lose the ability to use Plasmids as long as they remain in the suit, and will also lose all research bonuses acquired previously. Friendly Big Daddies produce a blue light from their portholes while an enemies one's shine red. In Survival of the Fittest, the Rosie's portholes shine yellow.

When turning into a Big Daddy, the player's health will be significantly increased, although it will no longer regenerate. Killing one also yields a significantly bigger ADAM reward, which places said enemy player as a prime target. The first Big Daddy suit spawns at the 13:00 minute mark on the clock. Once the player has been defeated, the suit can spawn again at a later time during the match.
The epilogue
The epilogue, happening after a whole year since the prologue, is played once the player reaches Rank 40. As they listen to the final message from Sinclair Solutions, which previously promised the "Mystery Vacation" to the most tenacious participants becoming Diamond Partners, a huge tremor interrupts the recording, shaking up the Apartment and sending the player to the ground. An emergency announcement from Andrew Ryan is then heard, informing of the near end of the Civil War, but also the coming of a new threat. He informs the city that its secrecy had been breached by the crash of an unknown airplane, and that a survivor is infiltrating the Lighthouse as he speaks. He then declares that all duties are put on hold until this threat had been confronted, while the main body of the plane appears falling from the surface and lands brutally right in front of the Apartment's windows.
Multiplayer Tips
Multiplayer Tips:

1.) The effects of the Incinerate and Insect Swarm plasmids can be cancelled by Aero Dashing.

2.) The effects of Insect swarm can be cancelled by hitting the melee button 3 or 4 times.

3.) A popular strategy to use in the lower levels is Aero Dashing into an enemy for a stun, then using shotty (prefered with 'rate of fire') to own them!

4.) A popular strategy to use in the higher levels is to Electro someone to paralyze them and lower their defenses, then score an easy headshot with the elephant gun!

5.) The big daddy suit doesnt spawn as 'random' as you might think! There are 3 designated locations for each map. Learn them for quicker grabs.

6.) Winter blast can freeze doors, slowing down pursuing foes.

7.) By constantly tapping the trigger, the nail gun can be kept revved. Just dont expect to be sneaking up on anyone sounding like a hoover!

8.) More then just a ground dash, aero dash can be used to traverse gaps! i.e. Move from one balcony to another.

9.) Geyser traps can also be shocked, so that they deal massive damage. ALSO if someone gets hit with one of your Geyser Traps, they are wet for a few seconds. Shock them for a instant kill.

10.) Woah! Not so fast! Two gene tonics take effect after a players death. "Death trap" makes a corpse explode after a few seconds, killing you if you're researching it or happen to be nearby. And "resurrection" brings players back to life! You'll notice people who have this equipped will fall to the ground in a funny way. Then their body will glow and their corpse will rise. Their health will be very low as a result so quickly melee them over the head to put them down for good.

11.) Geyser Traps can be used to jump to inaccessible places. So whenever you play a game like Team ADAM Grab, always make sure you go into the match with either Geyser Trap or the Leg Up tonic equipped because people WILL hide with the Little Sister in areas that aren't accessible to people who can't perform higher than normal jumps.

12.) You can freeze hacked Vending machines to disable the traps!

13.) Also, to negate the effects of an electrified Geyser trap, simply SHOOT the geyser trap and it will go off, allowing you to continue on your merry way! The same can be done with the detonating bombs that the Big Daddy sets. Shoot and they explode.

14.) If you see one of your teammates on FIRE, feel free to use Winterblast on them to put out the flames!

15.) Telekinesis can be used to launch rockets back at turrets.

16.) Got the big daddy blues? Winter blast actually lowers defense. Try using it with a nail gun to bring em down! (Insect swarm also blinds the big daddies pretty well)

17.) Did you know if you Winter blast an enemy, then aero dash through them they will shatter?! AWESOME!!!

18.) During ADAM Grab or TEAM ADAM Grab if you have the Little Sister while hiding and you know for sure a pursuer is right around the corner, you can drop the Little Sister by pressing fire button to start shooting your pursuer

19.) Death trap aka "the explodey thing" is unlocked at level 38. and is well worth it. You know all those enemies you see researching your body on death cam? lots of em blow up :)

20.) For maximum effectiveness on Geyser Traps, place them on a place where the space is very tight and closed in. The smaller the place, the harder it will hit the roof / wall (Don't forget to electrify them).

21.) You can tell a vending machine is sabotaged by a red light on its right side. A blue light means a teammate has sabotaged it (you can still use it). A yellow light means no one has sabotaged it. However, if you join a game that's already in progress, there's a glitch in the multiplayer that will show a yellow light even for vending machines that have been hacked by the enemy. Use caution whenever you join a match that's already underway. This glitch goes away after your first death in the match (which will probably be by vending machine explosion!).

22.) If an enemy turret is firing at you, you can use incinerate, winterblast, electro bolt, or insect swarm to stun it for a few seconds so you can get close enough to hack it.

23.) You can research any dead bodies, not just the ones you killed. If no one else is there to claim it grab a snapshot.

24.) When you become the big daddy you have more attacks than just the rivet gun. Left mouse button will throw a proximity mine. Very strong and if it hits someone dead on is an instant kill. Space is a stomp that will stun any close enemies. Very helpful if someone hits you with bees or keeps circling around you.

25.) Killing the Big daddy is hard if they know what they are doing, if they dont
know how to use the big daddy though stay close to them and spray them down
shock then spray, if they are good at what they are doing then keep a medium to
long distance and switch between either shocking or freezing them and then
shoot with your most powerful gun once they get to a quarter or less health, if
u have shock over charge it then go for sniper headshot or telekinesis throw
with an explosive or get behind them with the nail gun and spray like no other

26.) Freezing something with winter blast makes your hack complete faster.

27.) Don't restrict yourself to one range of gun, always have a mix. An example of
a bad load-out is a elephant gun and a crossbow. It limits u to only long range
shooting effectiveness. An example of an effective load-out is the shotgun for
close range and machine-gun for midrange.

28.) Hack and research with caution. Give the area a quick double check
to make sure you didnt miss the guy hiding in the corner before trying to hack a turret or research a corpse.

29.) You can use Aero Dash to glide ride over electrified Geyser Traps without taking any damage. Very useful in games like Team Adam Grab where people use Geyser Traps to defend the room they're holding up in. Also, Winterblast can be used on Geyser Traps to get rid of them as well.

30.) Also, Aero Dash breaks you out of ELECTRO STUN. That's right, no more sitting there paralyzed when someone uses Electro on you. Use Aero Dash to break free and go crashing right into them. That will show those EG gun users who the boss is.

31.) Keep in mind that Electro lowers your defenses by 25% for as long as you are paralyzed and remain standing still. All the more reason to keep that Aero Dash ready.

32.) If you want to learn the maps fast and effectively. You can start a private match of any kind all by yourself. It actually lets you explore the maps completely alone, a good way to walk around and learn the layout, search for hiding places, use geysers or Leg Up to jump to high places, etc.

33.) Electrified Geyser Traps and Proximity Mines work the best when you put when behind an opening and closing door, because people can't see them until they're basically right on top of them.

34.) Expert Hacker Tonic lets you hack with only one turn of the wrench, it is very fast.

35.) When you're just about to die because a body you're near has the Death Trap tonic, quickly jump up into the air. If you time it right you can actually avoid getting killed if there is no time to move away from it.

36.) When you see a vending machine that's been sabotaged by the enemy, approach it from the side, gently brush against it and then quickly jump backwards. This will trigger the bomb to fall out of it but you will not take any damage since you jumped away quickly. Then you can proceed to sabotage the vending machine for your own team.

Finale
