Alternative history is sci fi why? in shor we can say. time machine is like sci - fi thing, you can back in time and change past and have what? alternative history.
Other way. In phisics is something like Infinite number of dimensions (or maybe not infinite but a lot of them :D) so here ww2 was win by allied, but in other dimension this war can be won by axis or russian.
So, yes alternative history (I very like talking about "what would have been if...") is a Sci-fi
