For wireless controllers make sure the controller is off.

2. Start the game

Go past Games for Windows – Live and use keyboard to reach the main menu of the game.

3. Connect/Turn on controller

Once in main menu of the game connect the wired controller or turn on the wireless controller by pressing the Xbox guide (Home) button. Now keybinds should be correct.

Yeah, Steam Input breaks controller support for all GFWL games.

For me this was an issue with steam controller support.
I have it set globally off and for this game that meant fire being mapped to R3.
Once I forced on the controller support for this game everything worked normally.
To do this right click on the game and go to properties. Then controller.
In the drop down pick "enable steam input".

Steam controller input has global and per game settings. If I have problems with games I cycle through these settings and it usually fixes it. Globally on and forced off for a game does not seem to have the same effect as Globally off to some games.
So a full cycle would be, Globally off game to default, then forced on for that game. Then globally on game to default and finally forced off for that game.

It read my Xbox 360 controller just fine.

i can literally play any other game with my controller but i cant with this game

For any game that has an issue with xbox one controller this program is great. I will link the 32 bit version for 32 bit games and 64 bit for 64 bit games

Copy the link and remove the space between Mega and .nz, Steam would not allow it as a link.
