GaT
Guards and Thieves or short "Gat" is the main mode of the game and usually a good way for a newbie to get started.

In this gamemode, the guards have to defend objects, which the thieves attempt to steal. After the stole the objects, the thieves have to escape in order to win.

Thieves: First of all, get an idea, where the item you want is actually located. You dont have to steal all the items, just the item the arrow points at. It is smart to stay in darkness as long as possible.
Turn off the lights and hide in bushes in order to not be detected. Try to avoid making unnecessary voices like breaking windows etc.
If you are a great thief, you wont even have to shoot a guard during this whole match. If you are close to the object, make sure, that no guard is nearby and then steal and run. Try to use a fast but safe way out, so stay in the darkness but dont wait too long, because the guards will try to catch up with you.
If you play with several other players in a team, use your teamchat to talk with them and agree on a tactic. It might be usefull to send almost all players of the team to one object you dont want to steal and which is placed at the other side of the map, in order to distract the guards, while one thief sneaks his way through their lines.
If you have to fight a guard, because they spotted you or you totally have to get to a certain space, try to use a hit and run tactic or surprise. For beginners, I would suggest to use Cobra or Saboteur, as they are both pretty easy to use for a beginner.
As a saboteur, try to block your opponent with your molotovs by throwing them at a door, in order to get this little bit of extra time you need to escape.
As a cobra, try to hide close to a door and step the guard in order to pass by. While fighting a guard might work, it is better to just sneak around them.

Guards: First of all: Teamwork is the key as a guard. While some pro players might just mow themselves through their enemies, you will not be able to do the same. Communicate with your team through the teamchat and make a plan on who covers which area. In most maps (like Office and Mansion) it is possible to totally block the thieves with just three guards who work together. Try to find a spot, where the map has only small accesses and make everyone block a part of it. In Office you can send on player to main hall, one to the bath and one to the balcony. In Mansion you can send one player to the garage, one to the bedroom and one to the top main hall to effectively block out teams. In case there is a medic, he should stay back and switch between the players to heal whenever needed. In case of a coordinated breakthorugh, help your teammates, but still keep an eye at your old position.
In order to spot teams, try to keep the light turned on and watch out for dark areas, as these are the places, where thieves usually hide. Also try to listen for sounds like moving doors, bushes, grass or breaking windows, as they give you a general idea of the direction the thieves are coming from.
When an object gets stolen, dont make the mistake and head straight to the object. Rather head towards the exits points at the bottom of the map in order to cut off the thieves and stop him from escaping. Dont forget to inform your teammates with a short command about the direction.
TDM
Another important mode is Team Deathmatch (TDM). It is one of the most common modes and mostly played by pros, so dont expect to get too far. This guide attempts to help you to stay alove at least for a bit.

Thieves: Thieves usually lack the firepower to defeat the guards in an open com bat, although some pros will do exactly this. Dont try it, they have hundreds of hours of practice and know every move they do, allowing them to take on a guard. As a normal player, you should try to use your stealth to your advantage.
First of all: Stay with your team. Together you are far stronger.
Next you should try to play defensive, excpet your team uses another playstyle. I know, that some pros will tell you to play more aggressive, but from my personal experience, a more defensive approach is better for new players.
Try to stay in a dark area and let the guards come to you. You can either try to burst them down with the help of a teammate or you use a hit and run tactic, where you shoot them and then hide behind the next door and use the darkness to get to another place of the map. If your team has a medic, try to stay close to him. If your team is good a cooperation, it is a well working tactic to have one player distracting the guard and the other one sneaking up and attacking him from behind or from the flank. This way you can even take out pros, as long as they are alone.
If several guards should approach your position, change position and hide, until you have a chance to face only one guard at once.
If the guards should have a medic, try to kill him first or use a class like merc or cobra, which deals enough burst damage to kill an opponent before heal matters.

Guards: The Guards are stronger than the thieves, but they still aren't undefeatable. As a new player, you should listen to your team and try to follow its tactic. If your team doesnt make a tactic by themselves, it is your turn to shine.
There are two basic strategies for guards:
1. Search for a huge and light room and defend it together under all means.
2. Rush towards the thieves and try to overwhelm them
Both tactics are legit and working, although I personally prefer the more defensive approach, as it allows you to listen to the thieves movement and maybe catch them offguard.
You should always stay in the light as a guard and turn your flashlight off while being in such an area. When you enter a drak area however, you should turn your flashlight back on.
Never keep your flashlight on in bright areas, as it makes it far easier for the thieves to hit you, especially for pro players!
As a guard, you should basically try to protect your medic, stay with your team and in the light and retreat, if you face several thieves at once.
CTF
In Capture the Flag, both sides try to capture the flag from the "Flag Home" of the opponent and bring it to their own "Capture Point". Don't make the mistake to bring the flag to your own Flag Home, as this will just make your teammates hit the desk with their heads.
It is mostly the best to split up the team and make one or two good players defend the flag while the rest goes for the flag of your opponents. In CTF, both a defensive and an aggressive playstyle can work out, if executed as a team, but since most public servers lack advanced teamwork, it is adviced to better use the split up tactic and have someone defending and someone attacking. From my personal experience, most players tend to rather attack than to defend, so if you see, that your team won't cooperate, just defend the flag yourself.
This might bring you a bad K/D, bad it helps your team a lot. In general the K/D in an objective based mode such as GaT or CTF shouldn't be taken to seriously, as it is much more important to fullfill the objective than to get as many kills as possible.
Also, when playing a support class, it is important to not just rush into your opponents. Medics and Carriers have weaker weapons and less HP than frontlin-classes like Guardian or Assault, so rather stay behind your opponents than to rush into them.

As Guard:
Try to stay in the light and stick with your teammates. Only attack alone, if you are sure, that there is maximum one thief defending the flag atm. Don't forget, that you might be able to get the flag but not able to get back to your capture point before the thieves catch and kill you, when you go alone.
When attacking, a Guardian can be very helpful to your team, as he is able to block the thieves from killing the flagbearer from afar.
When defending, don't forget, that you also can use a bush to hide inside, until you get a good shot on a thief. Even pro players sometimes forget to check bushes or corners, so staying there and starting an ambush is a tactic, which works out quite well. Just make sure to not enter a bush while a thief is still watching you.

As Thief:
Don't forget to use th darkness to your advantage. When approaching the flag home, try to stay hidden as long as possible and plan ahead: Grabbing the flag with a guard right behind you will likely bring you nowhere.
Rather try to stay hidden, grab the flag and then take an alternative or fast route out. Especially in Office it pays off to use vents. When a teammate grabs the flag, consider distracting the guards by moving into the opposite direction or shooting them, while your teammate runs away. It doesn't matter, that they will kill you, as long as your teammate scores and your team wins.
When defending, don't forget, that you are weaker than a guard and should try to strike from the shadows.
IG and igCTF
The IG or "Instagib" mode is a special mode for OGAT. In this mode, both teams have the same classes and the mode is mostly played on one of the symmetrical VR maps.
The mode is special, because every character only survives one shot, before it dies. Therefore, aim and movement are especially important in this mode.
In order to avoid instantly dying, try to stay in cover as long as possible. If you leave the cover, then keep moving, until you get into new cover. Since every shot can be deadly, you should watch out for enemies and try to surprise them, since the first one to shoot will usually win a fight.
The guns have a "reload" time after each shot, so make sure, that your shots actually hit.
Don't reload manually, since this just makes you vulnerable for a second without having any use, since the mag is usually big enough to last until you die.

The rest is basically a normal TDM/CTF match, just without stealth and with deadlier weapons.

I will add more modes soon, for now I added the two main modes. I plan on adding DE, CTF and gTDM, as they are also important and played quite often, maybe also ZR, as it is a popular moe amongst newbies.
