Description
Hello fellow Mayors and Welcome to Wallis

This is my first Cities: Skylines map and it is inspired by southern Switzerland and canton Wallis, where the tallest Alps are. I lived there for some time and took the name for the map. Here’s an introduction to the map.

Idea:

The idea behind the map was to create a lot of scenic roads, mountain passes, idyllic mountain villages with resorts nearby, waterfalls, a glacier and one big busy city near a large water source. The area around the big lake in the lower left corner was meant to be a major cross section of roads, rail and ship lines for a big modern city. Outside of the map, the lake continues to a busy river stream which eventually leads into an ocean. Although map has the name of Wallis it is not a representation of that area - it is purely made from my ideas and thoughts.

Layout:

As you can see, there are a lot of mountains in this map. Building difficulty ranges between easy and hard, with the easy being the starting area one square next to the big lake. In the starting area you have highway, rail road and a mountain river. The starting area should be easy enough, and you can expand in any direction because the whole area around the lake is flat. Later if you want more challenge you can expand into an area with a steeper terrain. If you use 81 tiles mod and unlock the whole map, you will find places in mountains that are very good spots for building either a village or a small city.

In the opposite corner of the map, you will find what is supposed to be a glacier – source of all the rivers on the map. I don’t know if I succeeded in making it realistic, as I used basic tools and wanted the map to be as vanilla friendly as possible. In that area, there is ore and lots of forests ideal for forestry industry.

Highways and rail are pre-built all around the map for basic connections and I made sure that the slopes are as realistic as possible. That’s why you will see roads and rail snaking around the hills creating beautiful scenic roads. Some of the roads are not connected and if you don’t have 81 tiles mod, they can be used as decoration at night. All nodes have been checked and outside connections verified. When testing, I encountered some problematic mods. You should check Technical and mod compatibility section further in this text.

Technical and Mod Compatibility:

Before I posted this map to Steam workshop, I have tested it with and without mods. These are the mods I had issues with:
- IPT aka. Improved public transport – while creating a test city, this mod had issues with creating train lines for some reason along with next one (EDIT: use IPT 2 by BloodyPenguin: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=928128676 )
- Multi track station enabler – it wouldn’t let me create any train line in my city and no trains were found.
Please pay attention to these two mods BEFORE you start building your city on this map. IPT might get an update and if it’s working for you, ignore the warning.
Mandatory:
- Unlimited outside connections – this mod is mandatory for this map to work. I needed one more outside connection to make sense of some future cities on this map. If you want to build mod free, open the Map editor and delete one of the highway connections, save and start a city.
- Mass transit and Snowfall – Snowfall for obvious reasons as this is a winter map. Mass transit as I’m using two lane highways and two way highways because they fit the map better.

Recommended:
- 81 tiles mod – this map is made to be used as a whole instead of just 9 tiles. Although you can build a fine city in 9 tiles and around the starting area, you will miss the possibility to build scenic roads and idyllic villages which was the main idea behind the creation of this map.
- SBB RE 460 Eurocity (Panorama) – to compliment the rail.
- Mountain Life District, Chalet – to get the Swiss themed villages. You can also use Norway or Canada styles as they should fit into this map quite nicely.

Finally, bear in mind that it’s not a perfect map and I hope you will have fun playing as much as I had creating it.

Additional: a number of friends asked me if I will be making this map as non-winter, and the answer is sadly - no. It takes too much time for me. Instead, you can use Environment changer mod: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=611254368
Please have in mind that this map was created as Winter themed and when testing mentioned mod, there were some gaps in textures around roads as snow was supposed to cover those gaps. Other than that, map works just fine.

@nhoustonguy: there's a mod that can turn this map into any other theme. I'm not sure about the name of the mod. I will post it when I get home
