Ya, in order to achieve how the light hits and bends around the fibers encased in it's resin, we decided to create a carbon fiber pattern from scratch with a suitable normal map. The way the grazing angle works with normals and how it applies to carbon fiber, it just felt like the best approach to get a believable look.
